Mind & Happiness 84
Since the activity of our Mind is what seemingly obscures our essential nature as absolute Existence, Consciousness & Happiness, in order to experience our essential nature we must put an end to all our mental activity – to all the thoughts that are constantly rising & raging in our Mind. All forms of thought or mental activity are nothing but the attention that we pay to objects – to things that are seemingly other than our Self. Throughout our Waking & Dream states, we are constantly thinking only about things other than our own Essential Existence or Fundamental Consciousness.
So long as we attend to anything other than our mere Consciousness of Existence, “I exist”, our Mind is active. However, if we try to turn our attention back on our Self to know our own Essential Self-Conscious Existence, the activity of our Mind will begin to subside. If we are able to focus our attention wholly & exclusively upon our Consciousness of Existence, “I exist”, then all our thoughts or mental activity will subside completely, & we will clearly know the True Nature of our own Real Self, which is Perfect & Absolute Existence, Consciousness & Happiness.
Did we not see earlier that Happiness is a State of Existence, & un-happiness is a state of doing ? In Deep Dreamless Sleep we remain as mere Existence, without rising to do anything, & hence we experience perfect Happiness. In Waking & Dream, on the other hand, we forsake our Essential & Natural State of mere Existence by rising as our Mind, whose nature is to be constantly doing, & hence we experience Happiness mixed with un-happiness. Whereas Deep Dreamless Sleep is a state of mere Existence, & therefore a state of perfect Happiness, Waking, & Dream are States in which our essential Existence is mixed with & obscured by all our doing, & are therefore States in which our Essential Happiness is mixed with & obscured by varying degrees of un-happiness.
Since our Existence is permanent & our doing is impermanent, our Existence is natural & all our doing is unnatural. Hence our Happiness is natural, because it is our Essential Existence, & all our un-happiness is unnatural, because it is a result of our doing or thinking. The root of all our doing, & hence the root of all our un-happiness, is only the rising of our Mind. Whenever our Mind rises, it is active, thinking thoughts of innumerable different kinds. Our Mind cannot remain for a moment without activity – without thinking of something other than our own essential Existence. As soon as our Mind ceases to think of anything other than our own Existence, it subsides & merges motionlessly in our Natural State of mere Existence, which is the Source from which it rose.
Thus, whenever our Mind becomes inactive, it ceases to be the thinking entity that we call “Mind” & remains instead as our Essential Self-Conscious Existence, which is its own True Nature. Though in Deep Dreamless Sleep our Mind subsides & remains merely as our essential Existence, the perfect Happiness that we experience in that State appears to be short-lived, because our Mind driven by its dormant desires eventually rises again to experience a State of Waking or Dream.
Therefore in Deep Dreamless Sleep our Mind & its inherent desires are not destroyed completely, but have merely subsided in a state of abeyance, dormancy or temporary quiet. If we wish to experience our natural & perfect Happiness permanently, therefore, we must not merely make our Mind subside temporarily in a State of abeyance like Deep Dreamless Sleep, but must destroy it completely. Since the rising of our Mind is the rising of all our un-happiness, the temporary quiescence of our Mind is the temporary quiescence of all our un-happiness, & the destruction of our Mind is the destruction of all our un-happiness. Why is our Mind, which is the root of all our desires & therefore the cause of all our un-happiness, not destroyed in Deep Dreamless Sleep ? Why does it rise again from that State ? To answer this, we must understand why it rose in the 1st place.

[A brief note of explanation – this Blog is entitled “Non-Duality & Science”, & so the more Science oriented pages (from what I like to think of as a “comic book”) have been posted there, while other chapters have been posted in the other Blog noted below. Science is a mental discipline that attracts some worthy admirers & participators. Some of these, too few, are good prospects for the ancient teaching introduced here in many ways. Otherwise certain Science topics like the Anthropic Principle, reinforce the general Theism which is a good idea in this materialistic age. A few other topics in Science, such as the Copenhagen II – Max Born – Von Neumann – Wigner model of Quantum Mechanics, are worthy entries to the extent that they introduce Consciousness into the physical Sciences. All that aside, the real topic here is the pinnacle as Advaita Vedanta, Non-Duality – that pinnacle being Ajata Vada, No–Creation. The great Teachers of the same include Sri Shankara & Sri Ramana Maharshi. Both would support Theism in general & adaptations of Vedanta, such as Vishishtadvaita Vedanta – Qualified Non-Duality, for those not making headway in Ajata Vada, their present course of growth might be better served with a temporary involvement in Qualified Non-Duality. The scientist who perhaps best expresses the influence of Qualified Non-Duality in Science, for instance, would be the quintessential “New–Age” Quantum Physicist, Amit Goswami. And so to that source, & the Quantum Activism he currently advocates [with a 1–course degree program], along with more than a half-dozen good books & former participation in the controversial What the Bleep movie, to him I extend enthusiastic endorsement, for that Qualified Non-Duality described in the context of Science. I do not stand so much “with him”, as much as nearby saluting his good work. Again, as here, a goal is inserting Consciousness into Science & “saving the World.”]
