Mind & Happiness 103
Another parallel line of reasoning can demonstrate the fact that we were conscious of our existence in Deep Dreamless Sleep. After we wake up from Deep Dreamless Sleep, do we not have a clear memory of having deeply slept, & of having known nothing while we slept ? Since we can have no memory of something unless we have actually experienced it, our memory of having deeply slept & having known nothing while deeply asleep is a clear proof of the fact that we did experience our self deeply sleeping & knowing nothing at that time.
If we did not truly remember our experience in Deep Dreamless Sleep, we could not know with such certainty that we were unconscious of anything at that time. What we would know about Deep Dreamless Sleep is not the positive knowledge that we slept & knew nothing at that time, but merely a negative knowledge that we do not remember any such State at all.
Instead of remembering a clear gap between one period of Waking & the next – a thought-free gap in which we were clearly unconscious of anything other than our own Existence – we would remember no break at all between 2 such consecutive periods of Waking. The end of one period of Waking would in our experience simply merge without any perceptible break into the beginning of the next period of Waking, & all our many consecutive periods of Waking would appear to us to be one single continuous & unbroken period of Waking, just as the many frames of a movie film when projected in rapid succession upon a screen appear to be one single continuous & unbroken moving picture.
If there were no continuity of our Consciousness during Deep Dreamless Sleep, the gap that exists between one period of Waking & the next would be imperceptible to us, just as the gap between each frame of the movie film is imperceptible to us. Deep Dreamless Sleep is thus a State of which we do have a direct & first-hand experience. Since there can be no experience without Consciousness, the fact that we experience Deep Dreamless Sleep clearly proves that we certainly do have some level of Consciousness even in that State. That level of Consciousness that we experience in Deep Dreamless Sleep is our deepest & most fundamental level of Consciousness – our simple Non-Dual Consciousness of our own essential Existence, which is our true Self-Consciousness “I exist”.

[A brief note of explanation – this Blog is entitled “Non-Duality & Science”, & so the more Science oriented pages (from what I like to think of as a “comic book”) have been posted there, while other chapters have been posted in the other Blog noted below. Science is a mental discipline that attracts some worthy admirers & participators. Some of these, too few, are good prospects for the ancient teaching introduced here in many ways. Otherwise certain Science topics like the Anthropic Principle, reinforce the general Theism which is a good idea in this materialistic age. A few other topics in Science, such as the Copenhagen II – Max Born – Von Neumann – Wigner model of Quantum Mechanics, are worthy entries to the extent that they introduce Consciousness into the physical Sciences. All that aside, the real topic here is the pinnacle as Advaita Vedanta, Non-Duality – that pinnacle being Ajata Vada, No–Creation. The great Teachers of the same include Sri Shankara & Sri Ramana Maharshi. Both would support Theism in general & adaptations of Vedanta, such as Vishishtadvaita Vedanta – Qualified Non-Duality, for those not making headway in Ajata Vada, their present course of growth might be better served with a temporary involvement in Qualified Non-Duality. The scientist who perhaps best expresses the influence of Qualified Non-Duality in Science, for instance, would be the quintessential “New–Age” Quantum Physicist, Amit Goswami. And so to that source, & the Quantum Activism he currently advocates [with a 1–course degree program], along with more than a half-dozen good books & former participation in the controversial What the Bleep movie, to him I extend enthusiastic endorsement, for that Qualified Non-Duality described in the context of Science. I do not stand so much “with him”, as much as nearby saluting his good work. Again, as here, a goal is inserting Consciousness into Science & “saving the World.”]
