Mind & Happiness 105
From analysis of our experience in our 3 ordinary States of Consciousness (Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep), we can conclude that we are the underlying Consciousness that knows both the conscious states of Waking & Dream & the seemingly un-conscious state of Deep Dreamless Sleep. Or to be more precise, we are that Fundamental Consciousness which always knows “I exist” & which in Deep Dreamless Sleep knows nothing but “I exist”, but which in Waking & Dream appears to know other things in addition to “I exist”.
Neither the Consciousness of things other than “I” that we experience in Waking & Dream, nor the un-consciousness of other things that we experience in Deep Dreamless Sleep , are ever able to conceal completely our Fundamental Consciousness “I exist”.
Nevertheless they do appear to cloud over & obscure this Consciousness “I exist”, making us feel in Waking & Dream “I am this Body” & in Deep Dreamless Sleep, “I am un-conscious”, & thereby they deprive us of our clear knowledge of our true State of mere Self-Conscious Existence. Therefore, to know clearly the True Nature of our Existence, we must use our power of knowing to attend to our fundamental & essential Consciousness “I exist”, thereby penetrating beyond the transitory appearances of both the objective Consciousness of Waking & Dream, & the seeming un-consciousness of Deep Dreamless Sleep.
We normally think of Deep Dreamless Sleep as a State of un-consciousness because we are accustomed to associating Consciousness with the state of knowing things other than our self in Waking & Dream. When the knowing of other things subsides in Deep Dreamless Sleep, we experience a state of seeming darkness or emptiness that we mistake to be un-consciousness.
So accustomed have we become to associating Consciousness with knowing things other than our own Existence, that we overlook the fact that in Deep Dreamless Sleep we are clearly conscious of our Existence. The reason why we thus overlook our clear Consciousness of our own Existence in sleep is because we have habituated our self to overlooking it in Waking & in Dream.
In both Waking & Dream we usually spend all our time paying attention only to the thoughts & feelings in our Mind, & to the objects & events in the seemingly external “World” & we seldom if ever pay any attention to our mere Existence, our Self-Consciousness “I exist”. Because we habitually ignore our Consciousness of our own Existence, we mistakenly believe that our dualistic “consciousness” – our “consciousness” that knows things that are seemingly other than our self – is the only Consciousness there is. Since this dualistic “consciousness” subsides in Deep Dreamless Sleep, that State appears to us to be a state of un-consciousness.

[A brief note of explanation – this Blog is entitled “Non-Duality & Science”, & so the more Science oriented pages (from what I like to think of as a “comic book”) have been posted there, while other chapters have been posted in the other Blog noted below. Science is a mental discipline that attracts some worthy admirers & participators. Some of these, too few, are good prospects for the ancient teaching introduced here in many ways. Otherwise certain Science topics like the Anthropic Principle, reinforce the general Theism which is a good idea in this materialistic age. A few other topics in Science, such as the Copenhagen II – Max Born – Von Neumann – Wigner model of Quantum Mechanics, are worthy entries to the extent that they introduce Consciousness into the physical Sciences. All that aside, the real topic here is the pinnacle as Advaita Vedanta, Non-Duality – that pinnacle being Ajata Vada, No–Creation. The great Teachers of the same include Sri Shankara & Sri Ramana Maharshi. Both would support Theism in general & adaptations of Vedanta, such as Vishishtadvaita Vedanta – Qualified Non-Duality, for those not making headway in Ajata Vada, their present course of growth might be better served with a temporary involvement in Qualified Non-Duality. The scientist who perhaps best expresses the influence of Qualified Non-Duality in Science, for instance, would be the quintessential “New–Age” Quantum Physicist, Amit Goswami. And so to that source, & the Quantum Activism he currently advocates [with a 1–course degree program], along with more than a half-dozen good books & former participation in the controversial What the Bleep movie, to him I extend enthusiastic endorsement, for that Qualified Non-Duality described in the context of Science. I do not stand so much “with him”, as much as nearby saluting his good work. Again, as here, a goal is inserting Consciousness into Science & “saving the World.”]
