The “consciousness” that knows other things is a transitory phenomenon that exists only in Waking & Dream, but it is not the only form of Consciousness that exists.  Even in Waking & Dream, a more subtle form of Consciousness exists, underlying & supporting the transitory appearance of our dualistic “consciousness”.  This more subtle form of Consciousness is our Non-Dual Consciousness of our own Existence, the Consciousness by which we each know “I exist”.

Thus our Consciousness in Waking & Dream has 2 distinct forms:

1) our fundamental “Existence Consciousness”, by which we know “I exist”, &

2) our superficial “knowing consciousness”, by which we know everything else.

Though we can thus distinguish 2 forms of our Consciousness, these are not 2 different Consciousnesses, but just 2 forms of 1 & the same Consciousness – the one & only Consciousness that exists.  The relationship between these 2 forms of Consciousness is similar to the relationship between the illusory appearance of a Snake & the Rope that underlies & supports that illusory appearance.

When walking in a dim light, we may mistake a Rope lying on the ground to be a Snake. Because we see the Rope as a Snake, we fail to see the Rope as it is, & hence we mistakenly think that what is lying on the ground is only a Snake.  Similarly, because we experience our “Existence Consciousness” as a “knowing Consciousness”, we fail to know our “Existence Consciousness” as it is, & hence we mistakenly think that the only form of Consciousness that exists is our “knowing Consciousness”.

Just as the Rope underlies & supports the illusory appearance of the Snake, so our “Existence Consciousness” underlies & supports the transitory appearance of our “knowing Consciousness”. Whereas our “knowing Consciousness” is a transitory & illusory appearance, like the Snake, our “Existence Consciousness” is not a transitory & unreal appearance, but is our True Self, our Essential Existence, which exists & is known by us at all Times, in all places, & in all States.

Since our “knowing Consciousness”, which is what is commonly called our “Mind”, appears in Waking & Dream but disappears in Deep Dreamless Sleep, it is impermanent, & hence it cannot be our Real Self – our True & Natural form of Existence & Consciousness.  Since our “Existence Consciousness”, on the other hand, exists in all our 3 States of Consciousness, Waking, Dream & Deep Dreamless Sleep, it is permanent, & hence it is our Real Self, the very Core & Essence of our Existence – our True & Natural form of Consciousness.

[A brief note of explanation – this Blog is entitled “Non-Duality & Science”, & so the more Science oriented pages (from what I like to think of as a “comic book”) have been posted there, while other chapters have been posted in the other Blog noted below. Science is a mental discipline that attracts some worthy admirers & participators.  Some of these, too few, are good prospects for the ancient teaching introduced here in many ways.  Otherwise certain Science topics like the Anthropic Principle, reinforce the general Theism which is a good idea in this materialistic age. A few other topics in Science, such as the Copenhagen II – Max Born – Von Neumann – Wigner model of Quantum Mechanics, are worthy entries to the extent that they introduce Consciousness into the physical Sciences. All that aside, the real topic here is the pinnacle as Advaita Vedanta, Non-Duality – that pinnacle being Ajata Vada, No–Creation. The great Teachers of the same include Sri Shankara & Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Both would support Theism in general & adaptations of Vedanta, such as Vishishtadvaita Vedanta – Qualified Non-Duality, for those not making headway in Ajata Vada, their present course of growth might be better served with a temporary involvement in Qualified Non-Duality. The scientist who perhaps best expresses the influence of Qualified Non-Duality in Science, for instance, would be the quintessential “New–Age” Quantum Physicist, Amit Goswami. And so to that source, & the Quantum Activism he currently advocates [with a 1–course  degree program], along with more than a half-dozen good books & former participation in the controversial What the Bleep movie, to him I extend enthusiastic endorsement, for that Qualified Non-Duality described in the context of Science.  I do not stand so much “with him”, as much as nearby saluting his good work. Again, as here, a goal is inserting Consciousness into Science & “saving the World.”]
