Mind & Happiness 117
The Consciousness that experiences both Waking & Dream is our Mind, & our Mind always experiences itself as Existence a particular Body, which is a part of the World that it is currently experiencing. If we did not limit our self as a Body & as a Body-bound Mind, we could not experience anything as Existence other than our self, because in Reality we are the unlimited Consciousness in which this entire Dream of Duality appears.
Since we are the Infinite Consciousness in which all things appear & disappear, we alone really exist, & nothing that appears to exist can really be other than our self. Therefore our Real Consciousness can never know anything other than itself – our own Real Self or Essential Existence, “I exist”. All otherness is experienced only by our Mind, which is a limited & distorted form of our Real Consciousness.
A Dream actually appears within our own Mind, but our Mind experiences itself as Existence a Body that exists within that Dream. Such is the self-delusive power of our Imagination. Therefore in verse 3 of Ēkātma Pañcakam Sri Ramana says:
“When [our] Body exists within our self [who are the basic Consciousness in which all things appear], a person who thinks himself [or herself] to be existing within that inconscient [material]
Body is like someone who thinks that the Screen, [which is] the ādhāra [the underlying support or base] of a [cinema] picture, exists within that picture.”
In the kaliveṇbā version of Ēkātma Pañcakam Sri Ramana added the compound word sat-cit-ānanda, which means “Existence-Consciousness-Bliss”, before the initial word of this verse, taṉṉuḷ or “within [our] self”, thereby reminding us that what we are in essence is only the perfectly peaceful Consciousness of Existence, “I exist””I am”.
Other than our basic Consciousness of our own Existence, everything that we know appears within the distorted “object-knowing” form of our Consciousness that we call our Mind, which arises within us during Waking & Dream, & subsides back into our Self during Deep Dreamless Sleep. Our true Consciousness of Existence – our Essential Self-Consciousness “I exist” – is therefore like the Screen on which a Cinema picture is projected because it is the one fundamental ādhāra or underlying base that supports the appearance & disappearance of our Mind & every thing that is known by the Mind.

[A brief note of explanation – this Blog is entitled “Non-Duality & Science”, & so the more Science oriented pages (from what I like to think of as a “comic book”) have been posted there, while other chapters have been posted in the other Blog noted below. Science is a mental discipline that attracts some worthy admirers & participators. Some of these, too few, are good prospects for the ancient teaching introduced here in many ways. Otherwise certain Science topics like the Anthropic Principle, reinforce the general Theism which is a good idea in this materialistic age. A few other topics in Science, such as the Copenhagen II – Max Born – Von Neumann – Wigner model of Quantum Mechanics, are worthy entries to the extent that they introduce Consciousness into the physical Sciences. All that aside, the real topic here is the pinnacle as Advaita Vedanta, Non-Duality – that pinnacle being Ajata Vada, No–Creation. The great Teachers of the same include Sri Shankara & Sri Ramana Maharshi. Both would support Theism in general & adaptations of Vedanta, such as Vishishtadvaita Vedanta – Qualified Non-Duality, for those not making headway in Ajata Vada, their present course of growth might be better served with a temporary involvement in Qualified Non-Duality. The scientist who perhaps best expresses the influence of Qualified Non-Duality in Science, for instance, would be the quintessential “New–Age” Quantum Physicist, Amit Goswami. And so to that source, & the Quantum Activism he currently advocates [with a 1–course degree program], along with more than a half-dozen good books & former participation in the controversial What the Bleep movie, to him I extend enthusiastic endorsement, for that Qualified Non-Duality described in the context of Science. I do not stand so much “with him”, as much as nearby saluting his good work. Again, as here, a goal is inserting Consciousness into Science & “saving the World.”]
