Mind & Happiness 137
Do we have any reasonable grounds for believing Non-Duality to be the Truth ? Sages experience this Truth as their own Real Nature, & they do not need any philosophical analysis or theoretical arguments to convince them that it is the Truth. But for those of us who mistake our self to be a finite individual, a clear understanding of the rationality of this idea is necessary
to convince us that it is the Truth, & that it is the one & only experience that is truly worthy for us to make effort to attain. Let us, therefore, see what reasonable grounds we may have, if any, to conclude that we are in Truth the Infinite & Absolute Reality.
Assume that we have all been convinced that our Essential Nature is only our basic Self-Consciousness – our Fundamental Consciousness of our own Existence, “I exist”. Unlike our Mind, our superficial “knowing consciousness”, which always mistakes itself to be a particular Body, our Real Self however, our Fundamental “Existence Consciousness”, does not mistake itself to be any particular thing, & hence it has no particular Form or Dimension.
Therefore, whereas our Mind has limited itself within the dimensions of Time & Space by identifying itself with a finite Body, our real Consciousness of Existence is not limited in any way. In Deep Dreamless Sleep, when we cease to mistake our self to be a finite Body, we do not feel that we exist in any particular time or place, but feel only “I exist”. The limits of Time & Space are ideas that arise only when we imagine our self to be a particular Body in either Waking or Dream.
Even now in this Waking State, if we try for a moment to ignore our Body & Mind & to be conscious only of our own Existence, “I exist”, we will be able to recognise that our Consciousness “I exist” is not something that is limited within the bounds of our physical Body. It just is, & is not something that can be located at any particular point in Time or Space.
Even when we identify our self with a Body & therefore feel our self to be located at a particular point in Time & Space, we always know “I exist”. Our Consciousness or Knowledge “I exist” is therefore unaffected by any changes in Time & Space. It exists unconditionally & since it exists in all our 3 States of Consciousness (Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep), it exists independent of any Body, & therefore independent of Time & Space.
Just as the “Time & Space” that we perceive in a Dream are both ideas that exist only in our own Mind, so the Time & Space that we perceive in our present Waking State are likewise both ideas that exist only in our own Mind. When our Mind subsides, as in Deep Dreamless Sleep, Time & Space both cease to exist, or at least they disappear & are no longer known by us. Therefore, since we have no reason to suppose that they exist in any way independent of or separate from the idea or mental image that we have of them, we can reasonably hypothesise that they are both mere thoughts, a fact that is confirmed by Sri Ramana & other Sages.

[A brief note of explanation – this Blog is entitled “Non-Duality & Science”, & so the more Science oriented pages (from what I like to think of as a “comic book”) have been posted there, while other chapters have been posted in the other Blog noted below. Science is a mental discipline that attracts some worthy admirers & participators. Some of these, too few, are good prospects for the ancient teaching introduced here in many ways. Otherwise certain Science topics like the Anthropic Principle, reinforce the general Theism which is a good idea in this materialistic age. A few other topics in Science, such as the Copenhagen II – Max Born – Von Neumann – Wigner model of Quantum Mechanics, are worthy entries to the extent that they introduce Consciousness into the physical Sciences. All that aside, the real topic here is the pinnacle as Advaita Vedanta, Non-Duality – that pinnacle being Ajata Vada, No–Creation. The great Teachers of the same include Sri Shankara & Sri Ramana Maharshi. Both would support Theism in general & adaptations of Vedanta, such as Vishishtadvaita Vedanta – Qualified Non-Duality, for those not making headway in Ajata Vada, their present course of growth might be better served with a temporary involvement in Qualified Non-Duality. The scientist who perhaps best expresses the influence of Qualified Non-Duality in Science, for instance, would be the quintessential “New–Age” Quantum Physicist, Amit Goswami. And so to that source, & the Quantum Activism he currently advocates [with a 1–course degree program], along with more than a half-dozen good books & former participation in the controversial What the Bleep movie, to him I extend enthusiastic endorsement, for that Qualified Non-Duality described in the context of Science. I do not stand so much “with him”, as much as nearby saluting his good work. Again, as here, a goal is inserting Consciousness into Science & “saving the World.”]
