The core of our Existence is free of thought, or devoid of thought. We cannot get away from our Pure Existence. So, we can start Self-Inquiry with our Existence. Where we start is where we end. For that Pure Existence, there cannot be a barrier of consisting thought, obstructing That which is without thought, or devoid of thought, That being our very Existence. That is already free from thought. Our Existence is already untouched & untainted by any idea. This is our very Existence & just “an” existence.

By the knowledge of experience, one attains liberation of the experience of Happiness from the Delusion of limitation of it by form & the ability to experience Bliss directly without delay. One must merge with That which is Bliss itself, free of Duality, for if the experience of Happiness is to be full it must endure.  And if it is to endure, one must become one with that Happiness.  By knowledge of the source of Happiness, one becomes & remains completely detached. Detachment is itself, Freedom & Bliss. By such knowledge, one is liberated from the external, the inconsequential, & the unreal. And one comprehends the reason for Self-Inquiry to know the Self. The Desire for Happiness comes from deep within.  It is an intuition that Bliss is one’s Natural State. This Bliss Includes Peace with no disturbance, Freedom with no Bondage, & Perfection with nothing incomplete.

If, in the Mind, we conceive of the idea: “The spiritual Path must start somewhere,” then  start with your very Existence.  Why attempt to start in the place that you really cannot start from at all ?  We may say that we must perceive, or proceed, from where we are beginning, yet where is the beginning ?  Could one even have an idea of a “beginning” existing, without Pure Existence to be the “ground” of that “beginning” to be “existing“.

When we comprehend the full significance of the very amazing Self-Inquiry that the Sri Ramana Maharshi has taught, we see that it is incredibly profound. The entire conception of Self-Inquiry, Meditation, or aspiring from some other location, from some other nature, & passing through the “barrier of thought” to get to the Self is only very partial. It is not a complete picture.

The results of Meditation upon, & absorption of, the discerning Knowledge regarding the nature of Happiness are the steadfast motivation to inquire so as to realize the Self, perception of the one motivation behind all kinds of searching through all kinds of experience  There is also Detachment from worldly things & cessation of worldly desire, & steady access to the inner source of Happiness. The Self is, in truth, perfectly full of Bliss. The imperturbable Peace, the ineffable & complete Happiness, quite beyond any sensation or mode of Mind, pervaded by a silent Knowledge of eternal, uncreated Perfection is known as “Bliss,” Ananda.  To realize this Bliss as it is, one should comprehend the nature of Happiness, examining it in 3 ways: Desire, Experience, & the Source. By knowledge of Desire one attains recognition of the basic “current” underlying all desires, all hopes, &  seeking in all kinds of experience, be such physical, subtle (“astral”, “prana”, life–energy”), or mental.  With this recognition, one uses that powerful “current” in an undiffused manner, to be absorbed in the Self. This recognition causes one to become one-pointed in the quest of the Self.

The Self never changes its True Nature. Therefore, the ideas condition themselves & never the Pure Existence upon which they depend.  It is impossible to ever get to the Self, since the Self is always present.  If we feel that we are trying to reach the Self.  The Endeavor is noble, but it is accomplished by realizing that the one who is supposed to reach the Self, is himself the Self that he is trying to reach.

The essence of the spiritual Means is the End itself.  The End appears in spiritual practice as the Means (the Self & Self-Inquiry merge into one).  By clear Discernment, one knows oneself truly. Thus one knows Reality as It is. Discerning Knowledge shows the clear, direct Path.  Discernment shows what Self-Realization is.  Discerning Knowledge is what composes, constitutes the spiritual Path.  In its True Nature, the Knowledge is directly experienced without any intermediary. That is the Knowledge of Consciousness itself. Any spiritual advance is in essence always one of Knowledge.  Knowledge is the essential spiritual experience.

Knowledge is not physical or mental in character.  Knowledge is not a sensation, a word, or an idea.  The basis of Knowledge is Pure Existence itself.  The attainment of Knowledge endure as Pure Existence endures, for Knowledge is not dependent upon anything of a temporary or transitory character.  Knowledge is the Formless Path to the Formless.

For Self-Realization, all that is required is the abandonment of the Imagination.  If something seems to arise, the simple instruction is to deeply inquire into the nature of the one for whom there is this arising.  Self-Inquiry dissipates his  apparent (Ego) reality, as dawn dissipates the dark of night. There is no connection at all between thought & Pure Existence.  For that Pure Existence, thought does not have any independent existence. Absorption in the core of one’s Self, the Heart, is the Silence in which all questions, all doubts, & all thoughts are dissolved.

Mis–identification seems to condition the experience of the Self. But the inquiry is : “Whose experience ?”  Does it condition the Self’s experience of Itself ?  Since it does not, it would have to condition someone else’s experience of the Self, & who would that someone else be ?  An unreal person entangles himself in an unreal Mind, which projects an unreal World, which then conceives of all kinds of conditioning.  For purposes of spiritual instruction, it is said that the Mis–identification conditions the experience of the Self, or conditions the Self.  But the Self is actually forever un–conditioned.

Knowledge reveals the real abiding place of Happiness. Those who have cognized the presence of Suffering in Life & are desirous of removing it permanently search for an answer in Knowledge. They do not expect Happiness to be found in any worldly manner, such as in sensory things or in the moods & emotions of a wavering Mind.

Spiritual aspirants, who desire to be free of desire, are not content with mere accidental respites from the Suffering caused by Ignorance.  They are in search of spiritual Bliss & Peace & are desirous of understanding how it is that Happiness shines forth at times. They yearn to have it abide knowingly & permanently & they understand that the way to accomplish this permanent remaining in Happiness is by Knowledge.

They understand that the way is not by any other means.  They then should determine with certainty the source of Happiness.  Ascertaining the unitary motivation in life, one becomes free of the idea of multiple motives taking one in multiple directions.

Accomplishing this, one concentrates the searching of one’s mind in the direction that is truly “within”. This prompts a yearning for Self-Knowledge & provides the motivation for the Self-Inquiry into the Self. The determination about Happiness is an inquiry into Bliss that leads one into an inquiry into Existence-Consciousness, because Existence-Consciousness-Bliss is the nature of the one Reality, the one Self.

The question in Self-Inquiry can be:  “For whom is the thought ?”  Everything that appears to exist is utterly dependent on this Existence, which is Absolute, but this Absolute Existence is devoid of any such modification as change, Duality, & thought.  If something seems to rise, it is based upon some kind of differentiation from that Absolute Existence.  This split styles itself as “I”, even without the word, “I”.  It is the notion, the mere supposition, that there is an “I”. Whether one has many thoughts or very few thoughts, we need to find his identity.  If we find his identity, he ceases to exist as such, & all that remains is the Absolute Existence in which nothing ever happened.

Ignorance is the lack of Discrimination, the lack of Discernment regarding what is real or not teal. But Discernment in Knowledge, or Discrimination is the perception of what is real & actually the Self.  Discrimination is essential for the destruction of Ignorance & the inner revelation of Knowledge.  The Knowledge itself is transcendent of concepts & thoughts.  Discrimination means using Knowledge to Self-Realize that Knowledge.

Self-Inquiry is always the inward, non–objective (trans–subjective) examination of the Subject.  Thereby, the Seer & the Seen are known to be only that Pure Existence they & have no different existence whatsoever.  Such Realization ultimately rewards the spiritual practitioner with Happiness.

When we notice a runaway excursion into thought, we must inquire: “Who is the one who is observing the thoughts ?”  We need to examine identity of that observer. We place emphasis not so much on whether there are few or many thoughts, but on the identity of the one who could say, or think, “This thought exists” & who becomes caught up in the idea of that thought. Inquire into his identity.  If his identity is not inquired into, there may be few or many thoughts, but the same Duality prevails.

For Pure Existence, which is Absolute, there can be no thought, or question of a thought, at any time.  There can never be such or any other kind of change in its True Nature.  Pure Existence cannot be modified into something else, & it does not have a changeful experience.  Pure Existence is just as it is forever, for it is Absolute. If something appears to happen, such as a thought, the question is: “For whom does it happen ?”  “What is his identity ?” It is not of great significance whether thought happens occasionally or frequently, or if thought is a sparse occurrence or a very cluttered mental occurrence.  “For whom does it happen ?”  “What is his nature “?  “Who is thinking ?”  The “I” who is the answer to such inquires is found to be unreal, absent.  “Behind” all that, the Absolute Existence is void of thought. For Existence, there is not a question of thought or of anything else.

Some places are considered “holy” & seem to especially support & foster Self-Inquiry & spiritual practice generally. Wherever Truth shines may become known in this World as a holy place. That effect is difficult to explain, yet there are Scriptures that have mentioned this. The effect of being in such a place is known by those who are there. But what is it that they experience when they are in that place or in such holy company ?  They experience something that goes beyond the boundaries of Time & Space. The effect is not really something in this world. World–less, Time–less, & Space–less, the pure Existence is what they experience in a “holy” place

But any place is holy when we experience something Time–less, Space–less, World–less, & Form–less, when we are Time–less, Space–less, World–less, & Form–less.  Then, “right here”, “here” & “there” disappear.  If one imagined that he is not in that Time–less, Space–less, World–less, & Form–less Consciousness, if one does not experience That,  the question should arise, “Why not ?”

That would be a call for the examination of “that” with which you are mis–identifying or to which you are attaching yourself.  If one is not experiencing the fullness of what is experienced in some “holier” place, it again is mis–identification.  At the same time, the advice given in various Scriptures & by Sages & Saints is that one should never permanently abandon any support which supplies such experience. That could be the holy place, the holy company, the Self, or any combination thereof.  It depends on the practice & spiritual approaches of the seeker in question.

All actually belongs to, actually is the un-changing Self.  Nor can it even ever belong to another. So it is because the very conception of “another” is a product again of Ignorance. The notion of an individual, separate “I” is the very epitome of such Ignorance.  Though unreal, such Ignorance seems to “veil” the Truth.  This unreal Cause yields an unreal Effect, that of apparent “bondage”.  Therefore it is imperative that Ignorance be destroyed so that no obscuration of the Self is experienced.  Ignorance can be destroyed by True Knowledge alone, & by no other means.

Feel that all of whatever you have thought of in Life exists is proof of the Existence underlying That. Thought is not proof of what you have thought of, but is proof that there is an invariable Existence that does not diminish, no matter how much you lend its reality to whatever you think. Pure Existence is quite beyond thought. Not one idea applies to this Pure Existence.

To be absorbed in Reality, free of the Mis-identification with thought, this is to know the Truth of your own Existence. One need not be concerned with whether the thought exists or exists not.  In our Self-Inquiry, let our focus be upon distinguishing our Identity from, & freeing our Identity from whatever is conceived. That accomplished, the Unconceived remains, which is Self-luminous. This Self remains as itself. This is absorption in the Self as referred to by the Sri Ramana Maharshi, Existence just by Itself.

The “state” of Self-Realization (not really a state) consists of  True Knowledge.  Reality always exists &, by its own True Nature, is perfect Fullness (sarvam) always. That the Self is ever–present is self-evident for non–existence of oneself is not known by anyone, ever.  The Reality of the Self is un-changing & un-changeable, & what changes is not real, but is only Illusion or mis–perception of what is real.

What truly exists is un-changing & un-changeable, That One & Alone, there is nothing else to alter It. If blissful Reality were not completely experiential at any time, this would not be due to a change in the un-changeable Real Self.  But neither would the same apparent change be due to “eternal factors”, for such would have no real preceding Cause.  The change, the lack of completely blissful experience only appears due to an Ignorance that actually has no existence of its own.  All actually belongs to, actually is the un-changing Self.

Since “all of our Illusions only prove the Reality & nothing more” [previous blog], & all is comprehended by that One, 1–without–a–2^nd. That One, actually being all alone (kevalya), it is revealed that all of “creation” reveals no-creation (the Ajata Vata school of Advaita Vedanta). The entire Illusion only indicates Reality, because there is only the undifferentiated One, & you are that One. That One is pure Existence, your own Existence, which you have always known & which you always are. There is no one who is apart from this. Know the Pure Existence from the Existence, itself.

Could there have been Illusion ?  For whom would the Illusion have been ?  Yourself  ? How can you think of yourself ? The entire purpose of spiritual practice, in all the forms that it takes and, most especially, in Self-Inquiry  to know your Self, which is absorption in That, as That, Itself.  This is to have the “vision” of Truth. It is to “see” Reality, which is seeing one’s own Self. One starts to realize this by first recognizing the Self’s freedom from thought. The Self is inconceivable. Distinguish clearly Existence from thought, be such a thought of the World, a thought of the Body, a thought of some attribute of the Body, a thought of some activity in the World, or a subtler or abstract thought.

Distinguish clearly what is merely a thought & what is Pure Existence, because the Existence is free from thought. If you are to know your Existence, you should disentangle the pseudo-connection between your Self, which is your Identity, & whatever is thought of. Whatever may be the thought, it is not you. In Truth, you have never thought of yourself, & you never will. You will know yourself, but you will never think of yourself. Every limitation, every kind of suffering, & every seed for suffering is a thought, & only a thought. A thought is just an idea. A thought is not reality. A thought is the stuff of which dreams are made. Such a thought is not the Truth. Such a thought is not Pure Existence, or in itself truly existent.

Thought is never a definition for what I am, for what you are, what remains to be called “your Existence” ?   What boundary does it have ?  What form does it have ?  What division does it have, ?  It is none & has none of such things.  In this space–like, One Existence, where is the place for thought ? Where is the cause of thought ?  Examining one’s own nature, know that it is transcendent of thought. Reality is this inconceivable sole Non-Dual Existence. Inconceivable because it cannot be conceived of, thought about, or any known as an object.

Examine your own experience to perceive what it actually is that you refer to as thought.  A mere wisp in instantaneous nothingness, inexplicable “mental” experience.  We, as Pure Existence, can remain free from the influence of any (apparent) idea, free from the impact of any thought, free from the hold of any concept, desire, or fear.

Unreal is the idea of an existent object, the idea of an existent perceiver, the idea of  an “I” since there is subject–object division, perceived or conceptual attributes. Fortunately, the (apparent) idea of the existence of the Supreme Self (though only apparent, yet still a redeeming idea) derives as Grace from that One Existence, even though the One Existence, which is, indeed, the Self, & which is the only true “I” transcends all ideas.

If you do not identify yourself with a thought & remain steady in the certain Knowledge that what is thought cannot possibly be who you are, Liberation reveals itself.

There has always been, & will ever be, only one “self”, that Non-Dual sole Reality known as Brahman, the Absolute; & also as Atman, “the” Self.  Without beginning or end, the Self is dimensionless, transcendent of size or extent, neither large nor small, never increasing or decreasing.  Nor does the Reality, the Self evidence any other phase or condition, or any objective quality – the Self, the Reality being non–objective, or “trans–subjective” (in the sense of what “subjective” would be if there were no real objects to complete the subject–object duality).

Self-Knowledge, Knowledge of the Self is based upon the seeker of Self-Realization having a firm conviction in his own identity, the identity or Non-Duality of “That” & “Thou“, as expressed in Tat Tvam Asi, “That Thou Art”, the Upanishadic “Maha-vakya” or “Great Pronouncement”, pronouncement of the Ultimate Truth.  “Thou” may seem to be an individual, but is truly Atman, “the” Self.  “That” may seem to be a separate deity,  God, but is truly Brahman the Absolute, which is also Atman, “the” Self.  To be forever free of all Suffering, & to rest in the Peace & Happiness that is the “Bliss” in Existence-Consciousness-Bliss, (another designation for Brahman), the seeker must “realize” his identity as Atman, one with Brahman.  This Self-Realization alone destroys the unreal Illusion (Maya) that constitutes, unnecessarily, all imagined limitation & suffering.

 Seems too good to be true ?  Actually, this Teaching is too good not to be true ?  But there is a “catch“.  Self-Realization require sincere effort – every drop of energy we have, but not a drop more !  Several “pre–requisites” are also involved.  Valuing this Self-Realization, true Immortality, requires that nothing else has greater value for us, indeed nothing else has any real value for us.  With this detachment, this non–attachment, there is necessarily also an inwardly–turned mind.  For the Reality discovered is inward, is non–objective, or “trans–subjective”, while Self-Realization is a “fixed gaze” upon the Infinite, which is Consciousness & Pure Existence, & at the same time Bliss, 1–without–a–2^nd or Non-Dual.  But as for the ” attainment” of Self-Realization, there is no attainment, for there is no “us”, no other Knower, but only That, Brahman  which alone knows itself.  Indeed, that Consciousness is itself the Knowledge of Itself.  Self-effort toward absorption in Brahman, Atman, the Self is the final, irreversible entry into the Real, discarding individual identity, suffering, & all Duality.

By Self-Inquiry in the form: “Am I merely a bunch of thoughts ?  Am I that collection of thoughts known as Mind ?  Do I even have such an imagined ‘thought–container’ as this ‘Mind’ ?   “What is a thought anyway ?”  “Is there such a thing as ‘thought’, & even if there is or were such a thing, could such define or bind me in anyway ?”  And so on. Thus I know myself as free from “thought”. That is, thought does not determine my nature. It does not provide a definition for me in any way whatsoever. The second aspect of this is that I understand that thought has no existence, and so That (Supreme Reality, Brahman) which alone truly exists, is devoid of thought.  Generally, the understanding of the Self to be free from thought would come first, prior to the comprehension that there is no such thing as thought. I understood this at the core of my being. How can I possibly be bound by what is thought of ?  How could thought ever be a definition for my own Existence ?  Ideas (if they existed) would depend on true Existence. True Existence, which is the Self, does not depend on ideas (if they existed). How could ideas, or thought (if such existed), in any form, or anything thought would define, be a description for what I am ?

Every idea such as “this is” or “I exist” depends on the fact that anything at all does exist in the first place, on the fact of  Existence itself.  Mundane thinking assumes that Existence is divided into different “things” whereas Advaita Vedanta (the Teaching of Non-Duality) affirms that Existence is One, or even beyond “one”, that Non-Dual, 1–without–a–2^nd.  We could not even have the idea that “something is” if it were not for that Non-Dual Existence.  This Pure Existence is itself the Absolute Reality, Brahman,  Existence-Consciousness-Bliss (Sat–Chit–Ananda) & at the same time Atman, the Non-Dual Self.  You are that Non-Dual Existence, no more, no less.

Much overlooked, because it is just too obvious, Existence itself is the sole Reality, Brahman.  And for this reason, inwardly following the “trail” to one’s own sense that “I exist”, one’s own sense of “I”.  Inwardly tracing this “I”, this sense that “I exist” to its non-objective or “trans–subjective” source or origin, such is called Self-Inquiry, Atma–vichara.  From an occasional spiritual practice, this Self-Inquiry progresses to a continuous “state of mind”, or rather, direct, transcendent Knowledge beyond any imagined Mind.

“Abidance in the Self”, which is pure, direct Self-Knowledge is never what we “think”. Thought is an evanescent appearance or apparent phenomenon (each lasting how long [in milli-seconds] ?) that is considered to be “unreal” in Advaita Vedanta (the Teaching of Non-Duality). Ultimate Self-Knowledge and the already certain knowledge of one’s own existence – these are other that thought, thought which only “appears” in Consciousness, without any real foothold there, any real inherent reality. “The already certain knowledge of one’s own existence” is currently evident.  If suddenly aroused from Deep Dreamless Sleep, & immediately questioned: “do you exist ?”, all experience that instant affirmation, faster than thought: “yes, I definitely do exist.”

That same sense of identity, now firmly & undeniably evident as one’s existence, does also, in Liberation, Awakening, Enlightenment becomes established as just the Pure Existence with is Pure Consciousness & Bliss. This Existence is what we always are. It is eternally the same. Only imagination gives rise to a contrary concept. Those are the limited views of being something else, such as an “I,” an object, and the assumption that somehow the Existence is divided.

To truly know your self, to know the One Self, one’s very sense of identity, one’s very sense of existence, should “abide” as, or be absorbed in, that Pure Existence, which is Absolute. No longer “think” of yourself in any manner whatsoever. No longer imagine yourself to be limited by, or defined by, anything conceived in the Mind. You are the One Existence. Let there be no mistake about this !  Such must be firm conviction in Non-Dual Existence.

For Realization of the invaluably precious opportunity of the “Final Teachings”, for a conclusive revelation of Reality “as it is”, one must investigate, inwardly study, scrutinize, “inquire” into the very definition of oneself, the nature of that certainty “I exist”.  By relinquishing the notion of being an Ego, we remain in our Real Nature. Such Self-Inquiry is actually to be maintained constantly whether thought, sense experience, or apparent bodily actions continue or not. The deepening experience of Self-Inquiry is said to be “immediate” experience, in the sense of “direct” without a “mediate” process intervening between the experience of Truth & oneself.

Existence–Consciousness is the One Reality which also is the One Self. We can remember an idea about the Self, but we cannot directly remember the Self as such since the Self is beyond thought. But cannot really forget the Self either, because that Existence is always present, resulting in everyone’s firm conviction in it, that “I exist”. Nor can the Self be remembered or even thought of, as if it were an object (Reality being non-objective or “trans–subjective”).  The Self can neither be forgotten nor remembered. It is not an object, & it is not apart from the one who seeks to know it. The Self is always there, but interior to, & beyond conception by, the Mind.

Yet having heard, or heard of the Teaching, one wants to “know” & “remember” the Self, to be awake to Reality, for not to do so is to “dream” in Illusion. To dream in Illusion is to unnecessarily create Bondage & Suffering. To be awake to Reality is to be happy, blissful, & at Peace. We sense this transcendent Knowledge was originally there, it was always there, but interior to, & beyond conception by the Mind so we want to remember it. (One classical analogy depicts a woman searching for a most precious jewel that seems to be lost. When her searching grasping turns inward towards her heart, she finds the jewel to have been on a necklace the whole time.)

Consider one’s Existence very deeply in one’s own Self-Inquiry. To know the Self is to be immersed in its Bliss & Peace. While we cannot simply or strictly remember the Self, we are taught that we can “merge”, “rest”, or “abide” as That, as pure Existence–Consciousness–Bliss which is free of all thought., That is the proper way to know the Self & the only way to “remember” the Self. We abide in That as That Self.
