REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 135

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

The Form of the Seen depends upon the instrument used to perceive that Form.  Instruments could include telescopes & microscopes, & also the Senses & the Mind.  The Mind is composed of its concepts, & the Senses are limited by the Sense organs.  The Senses are actually just the instruments of the Mind, they are just a particular form of thought.  Any Form seen will correspond to the instruments of the Seer.  A change of those instruments will change the Form of the Seen.  The Form of the Seen is likewise dependent entirely upon the Form of the Seer perceiving through those instruments.  Therefore, we have not seen or experienced anything but the Form of those instruments.  That is, we experience the Forms of our Senses.  We experience the Forms of our mind.  We have never experienced anything sensed; we have just experienced the sensing.

That which is objective, inclusive of the Ego, can have no knowing power, for all that is objective is not Consciousness itself & is unreal. The objective & unreal cannot know themselves, cannot know each other, & cannot know the Knower.  The sole Knower is the Self, which is the unknown Knower of all that is known.  Though the Knower cannot be known objectively, thr Knower is nonetheless known in Self-Knowledge.  Such Knowledge is devoid of the triads of Knower-Knowing-Known.  It is this true Knower of the Knowledge that is referred to in the Upanishad aphorism, “Tat tvam asi (That Thou Art) & not anything else.  Anything else would be a mere superimposition on the Real Self & would have no such Knowledge.

[Ramana]

An unSelf-Realized ajnani sees someone as a Self-Realized jnani & identifies him with the Body.  Because he does not know the Self & mistakes his Body for the Self, he extends the same mistake to the state of the Self-Realized jnani.  The Self-Realized jnani is therefore considered to be the physical frame.

One must have a Form to “see” Forms.  Even if the Form is as vague as “there” or as some “thing”; something “inward”  or “outward”, there must be some “seer” of that Form.  But if one is Formless, then what happens to a Form like “there” ?  Whether we regard “there” in terms of the Universe, or in terms of God, if they lose their Form, what actually exists” ?  Continue Self-Inquiry into Pure Existence & see if Pure Existence has a Form.  See if the existence you know as your own has a Form.  To know the Seer, remove what is objectively known from that Seer.  Determine whether the Seer has a Form.

Mistaking the mind for the Self is like mistaking the reflection in the mirror to actually be one’s face. Mistaking the body for the Self is taking a corpse to be alive and holding it dear and is the cause of suffering. Mistaking the ego to be the Self is like believing as fact the mythological story of someone who was never born. Misidentification is the cause of confusion. Self-Knowledge is abidance with no false identification with the ego, mind, and body. The Self alone knows.

[Ramana]

Any amount of action can actually be performed, & performed quite well, by the Self-Realized jnani, without his identifying himself with it in any way or ever imagining that he is the doer.  Some power acts through his Body & uses his Body to get the work done.

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

Self-Inquiry avoids the pitfall of one not looking at oneself.  It avoids the error of thinking this is an objective topic & an existence apart from oneself. What Form does that “self” have ?  If we say, “The Self is there,” “God is there,” “The World is there,” or “The Universe is there,” then what is the “there” ?  What actually exists ?  In the context of the forms of those things, by which we would differentiate them one from another, what is it that we see ?  What actually is there ?  To know that & thus to know what actually exists, we must cast away from the Knower whatever definition or form seems to be appended to him. The way is always inward & not outward.  Therefore, regarding the World, etc., Sri Ramana poses the question, “If the Self is formless, who is to see ?”

Delusion is the mistaking of oneself for all those “attributes” which are objective.  Such Delusion veils the Blissful experience of the Self.  One cannot have simultaneously the ideas, “I am this, I am like this, or I do” & the Knowledge of being the Self.  Therefore, one ought to inquire so that one becomes free of such ideas.  This involves the cessation of Mis-identification with the Body & the Mind.  Since Existence is not the Body or the Mind, one never does anything.  Similarly, Existence is never this or like this, but only Existence.  Ignorance makes one believe that the Mind, which is illumined by the Light of Consciousness, is the Self.  The Mind’s apparent power of knowing is only Reflected Light.  It is like seeing Sunlight reflect off a shiny object & thinking that the light actually belongs to that object.

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

Existence is not “nothing”. If we would have an idea of “nothing”, the reality quality attributed to that “nothing” would be derived from the very same Existence.  So, when someone says, with apparent conviction or certitude, “There is nothing there,” he is very convinced of “there”, & he is very convinced of his own existence, he the one who is making the declaration.  Sri Ramana Maharshi’s Teaching starts at that point, questioning, “Who is it that exists ?”  We could say, “What is it that exists ?” but, generally, Ramana has stated, “Who is it that exists ?” & “Who is it that sees ?” because the way for Self-Realization is nonobjective.

When the Witness alone remains as one’s Identity & as the Reality, all that there is to such is Pure Consciousness, which is Real Existence.  Pure Existence is an “I”less  “I” with nothing else whatsoever.  Until this is realized firmly, one should discriminate & cease to misidentify, inquiring within, “Who am I ?”  Knowledge is remaining free of any Mis-identification with the Body, the Mind, & the Ego.

[Ramana]

NonDoership can be understood with an illustration that is generally given is that the jnani performs actions in some such way as a child that is roused from sleep to eat eats but does not remember next morning that it ate.  It has to be remembered that all these explanations are not for the Self-Realized jnani.  He knows & has no doubts. He knows that he is not the Body & he knows that he is not doing anything even though his Body may be engaged in some activity.  These explanations are for the onlookers who think of the jnani as one with a Body and cannot help identifying him with his Body.

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

Form is always of the nature of the attribution of some quality, some definition to the Seer, which is yourself. According to whatever quality or attribute is superimposed through imagination on the Seer, the Seen, or object part appears likewise through the vision of that superimposition. The definition of the Seer determines the definition of the Seen.  The Seer being with Form, with some kind of definition, the Seen appears likewise.  In Delusion, the Seer is determined to be limited to the Form of the Body, rather than to be the limitless Self.  The corresponding Seen object will be the Form of the World, which appears as if external to the Body. “There” is some sense of Existence plus Time & space projected onto it.  Existence does not have a Form.  It is the “there” in our experience, & it is also the “here”.

Self-Inquiry negates all that is thought to make the Self & Brahman different. One should meditate upon being only the Witness & not anything witnessed, whether the witnessed be a known conception or perception.  The entire personal orientation should be utterly abandoned. The Identity & Reality should be known as the Witness, & all that is witnessed should be known as not the Self & as unreal. The Meditator should discriminate more & more finely between the Knower & the Known, so that Mis-identification ceases, that is so that that superimposition of the Known upon the Knower ceases.

[Ramana]

The radio sings & speaks, but if you open it you will find no one inside.  Similarly, the Existence of the Realized jnani is like Space.  The Body speaks like the radio, but there is no one inside as a Doer.

The jnani can live & act without the Mind, although living & acting seem to require the use of the Mind. Illustrations given in books include the “Potter’s Wheel” turning round even after the Potter has ceased to turn it because the Pot is finished.  In the same way, the electric fan goes on revolving for some minutes after we switch off the current. The prarabdha [predestined karma] which created the Body will make it go through whatever activities it was meant for.  But the Self-Realized jnani goes through all these activities without the notion that he is the Doer of them.

Whatever Form the Seer has, subtle or gross, identified with the Mind or with the Body, the Seen will correspond, whether the Seen is the World in the attempt to know what “that” is, or the seen is God in the attempt to know what “That” is.  If you remain as the Formless Self, without the assumption of “I”, “who” is to see & “what” is to be Seen ? Only the Infinite, Perfect Fullness exists. We may call that “the Self”.  We may call that “Brahman“.  The Infinite, Perfect Fullness is the Reality, without an “I”-sense, & this is without an objective outlook. This is nonobjective true “Vision”.

Liberation is by Knowledge alone, and Knowledge is neither sensory nor conceptual in nature. The Self-Realized by such Knowledge has neither inner nor outer, but is ever-existent, Omnipresent, Indivisible, & indescribable.  The true nature of the individual self is actually Brahman. There is only One Self, whether imagined to be individualized or realized as it truly is. If one inquires into this apparently individualized self, all that one finds is the Self, which is Brahman.  All that is thought to make oneself different from the Self can be relinquished by Self-Inquiry that negates Mis-identification, the questioning of, “Who am I ?”  Therefore, the Upanishads instruct, “not this, not this”   neti neti.  Immortal Liberation is freedom from destruction & fear. The individual seems as if subject to both.  In truth, the Existence that seems to be an individual is only Brahman.

[Ramana]

There actually are sensations for the Sage & also the “I am the Body” Idea, common to both the Self-Realized jnani & the unRealized ajnani but with a difference.  The unRealized ajnani thinks only the Body is myself, whereas the Realized jnani knows all is of the Self, or all this is Brahman.

If there be pain let it be. It is also part of the Self. The Self is perfect.  After transcending the “I am the Body” Idea one becomes a Self-Realized jnani.   In the absence of that “I am the Body” Idea there cannot be either “Doership” or a Doer.  So a jnani has no karma [that is, a jnani performs no actions]. That is his experience. Otherwise he is not a jnani.  However the ajnani identifies the jnani with his Body, which the jnani does not do.

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

The Self-Inquiry: “For whom is this ?”” returns the Reality & identity to within, & the Self-Inquiry: “Who am I ?” reveals the True Nature of this Self. That vision in which one remaining as the Formless, “is single, limitless, &, certainly, perfectly full.” With the rise of the notion of “I”, at that very moment, the assumption of Individuality is through Delusion only. There is an illusory deficiency. The moment that the “I” subsides, the Reality shines just as it has always existed.  The Reality is the perfect Fullness. There is no deficiency in the Reality.  There is not anything beside the Reality, for it is Limitless. That means that no one & nothing can stand apart from the Reality not God, not the World, & most certainly not the Individual. “If the Self is Formless, who is to see ?” Inquire & examine the definitions of the Seer. Know the Seer.

To spiritually wake up, one must know the Self truly. The Reality of the Self is pure Consciousness with no Duality& with nothing else existing whatsoever.  One cannot have simultaneously the Knowledge of the Self & the idea of oneself as a Performer of activity or an Experiencer.  For steady, unmixed Knowledge, one should cease such Mis-identification.  In the Waking State, one experiences the interior & the exterior, what is sensed & what is thought. In the Dream State, the case is identical.  In both States, these [interior & the exterior, what is sensed & what is thought] are not the Self & are unreal. Those contents in both States should not be regarded as defining the Self.  When such contents are falsely associated with the Self, that is superimposition. No activity of the exterior & the interior yields Liberation, for activity of an unreal superimposition cannot yield Eternal, real Liberation.

[Ramana]

The Self-Realized jnani is the ever-Waking state, because he is awake to the Eternal Self.  His is the ever-Dreaming state, because to him the World is no better than a repeatedly presented Dream phenomenon.  His is the ever-sleeping state, because he is at all times without the “I am the Body”-consciousness.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 128

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

Self-Inquiry clarifies our conception of the World, much as it does our conception of the Individual self.  The world has Form as long as the idea that the Self has Form continues to exist. If the Self is Formless, “who ?” is to see, whether such is seeing God or seeing the World ?  If the Seer is Formless, do Seeing or the Seen exist ?  If the experiencer is Formless, what remains of the experiencing ?  What remains of the object of experience, the entire World, & even of the experience of God ?  The Form idea of the Self is only in oneself.  The ideas of a Form of the World & a Form of God are only in oneself.  The idea of the “external” is not indeed “external”.  If within is the Self, & if the Self is Formless, who sees what ?

Consciousness is the Self, the true “I”, which is free from Ignorance, has no attributes, no functions, & no qualities, & which is transcendent of all 3 States (Waking, Dream, Deep Dreamless Sleep). Space-like & never tainted by any of the defects or limitations of the beings it indwells, Consciousness alone is the Self.  This Self is free from all notions, forms, & actions.  It is always withouta2nd.  Sri Sankara proclaims that as long as there is no Self-Knowledge, the identification with the Body & such & the belief in the authenticity of sense-perceptions continue, just as Dreams appear to be true as long as one does not wake up.

[Ramana]

For the Self-Realized jnani then, there is no distinction between the 3 States of Mind.  How can there be, when the Mind itself is dissolved & lost in the Light of Consciousness ?  For the Self-Realized jnani, all the 3 States are equally unreal.  But the unSelf-Realized ajnani is unable to comprehend this, because for him the standard of reality is the Waking state, whereas for the jnani the standard of

Reality is Reality itself.  This Reality of Pure Consciousness is Eternal by its Nature & therefore subsists equally during what you call Waking, Dreaming, & Deep Dreamless Sleep.  To him who is One with that Reality there is neither the Mind nor its 3 States [Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep] &, therefore, neither introversion [not seeing a World] nor extroversion [seeing a World] .

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 127

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

When with the help of Self-Inquiry, you know yourself as Formless, there is nothing “else”, Divine or worldly, “seen” at any time. When you know yourself, the Formless, as you are, there are no parts within you, there are no things “outside” you, & there is nothing to divide your experience.  Rather, your experience is continuously that of the one Self, which is just Pure Existence. Existence never becomes anything. Existence is not born as a Seer, & therefore is not born or created into a “this”.  If the Self is imagined to have a Form, the very same Self that is misconstrued as a Seer is also mistaken to be the Seen. The Self appears as the “I” & the “this” in one’s experience.  Search the “I”. What form does it have ?  As long as the Self is falsely defined, then according to those false definitions, the World & the Lord appear. But could we ever understand what God is unless we know ourselves ?  All that we would have is a human conception of God, & not a Knowledge of God by God.

Nothing other than Knowledge can yield Realization, for Consciousness is identical with Pure Existence.  Knowledge is of the nature of Consciousness itself, & there really exists nothing but Existence, which is Knowledge or Consciousness.  In relation to All, the Self is the Witness, & being such is attributeless.  The Witness is That which never changes, but which knows all the changes thoughts, modes, & States (Waking, Dream, Deep Dreamless Sleep) of all Minds.  The Witness knows all the functions of the Mind in Waking & Dream.  In the absence of the Mind’s functions, that is without those 2 States (Waking & Dream), what remains of the Witness is Pure Consciousness, which is Omnipresent & Un-changing.

[Ramana]

For those who experience Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep, the State of Wakeful Sleep, which is beyond those 3 states, is named turiya [the 4th].  But since that turiya alone exists & since the seeming 3 states do not exist, know for certain that turiya is itself turiyatita [that which transcends the 4th].

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 126

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

“Who” sees “what ?”  No one sees anything at any time.  Vision, or the Eye, the one that “sees”, that beholding or that “seeing”, is really only Pure Existence. So, Sri Ramana describes it as One, That is singular, for It has no Duality, no divisions in It, & there is nothing apart from It.  Limitless, there is nothing beyond It or outside of ItIt is certainly perfectly full. Realizing It as It is, all is complete. When you think of yourself as having Form, there is limitation. Then, there is something outside. Then, there is something “other.” Then, there is some kind of division.

Since there cannot exist a Mind other than the Self, which is infinite & Non-Dual, in reality the Mind can not have activity or its results.  Freedom from the Mind is Freedom from the fears of loss of Happiness & of ceasing to exist. Freedom from the Mind is freedom from desires & the grief resulting from those desires. Thus one who knows the Self, free of the Mind, is truly happy & is solely That which is the same in all beings. All beings are by nature pure Consciousness.  Difference from Consciousness is only illusory appearance due to Ignorance. The illusory difference is removed by comprehending the Knowledge that one is solely Pure Existence.  Such Knowledge alone is the means to realize Immortality, for Existence never ceases to be.

[Ramana]

The Self-Realized jnani does dream, but he knows it to be a Dream, in the same way as he knows the Waking State to be a Dream. The Self-Realized jnani being established in the 4th state turiya, the Supreme Reality he detachedly witnesses the 3 other states: Waking, Dreaming, & Deep Dreamless Sleep, as pictures superimposed on the Self.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 125

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 125

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

Sri Ramana Maharshi says, “If the Self is formless, who is to see ?” Where there is form attributed to yourself, there is Seeing & something Seen, be it God or the World. Where the Self is known as Formless, there is Pure Existence, not seeing.  Then all this Universe & God also are only my Self. Thinking that you see the World, “who” actually sees what ?  In illusion, what is it that we call “this Universe” ?  Who is the Seer of it ?  What is it that we call “God” ?  Who sees God ?  “If the Self is Formless, who is to see ?” If there is no seer, as implied in his rhetorical question, there is only vast, unlimited Pure Existence.

The Mind cannot belong to the Self.  The Self is ever unattached & cannot belong to anything else.  Therefore, the Self is unaffected by anything done by the Mind.  When Attachment is present, even as on the notion of “possession”, the possessor is as it were possessed by the “possession”.  Since the Self is unattached to all, including the Mind, the Self is possessed by none & is not affected by any.  If one becomes detached from all things in the World & to one’s own thoughts in the Mind, he finds that what he has reached was the Real State of the Self all along.

[Ramana]

The Self alone exists & nothing else.  However, the Self seems as if differentiated owing to Ignorance. The apparent differentiation is 3fold:  (1) of the same kind; (2) of a different kind; & (3) as parts in itself.  But The world is not another Self similar to the Self.  It is not different from the Self; nor is it part of the Self.

For the World to be a “reflection” in the Self, there must be an object & an image [as in a mirror].  But the Self does not admit of these differences.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 124

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

The Self never has a form, but if you believe that the Self has a form, you will believe in an existent World with form & a Lord with form. Only so long as the Self is regarded as with form do such delusions appear. If that belief ceases, what remains of the Lord ? What remains of the World ?  If the World is without form because the Self is without form, what kind of World is that ?  If because the Self is without form, God also is seen without form, what kind of experience of God is that ?

All the efforts involving Mis-identification within the Mind & all the superimposition of experience upon the Self    these produce only Illusion & not anything real.  The Illusion is that of limitation by form, of being within a Body or at a location, of mortality, of the belief that something destructive of bliss can happen, of differentiation or division into parts, & of connection with actions & their results. The Self is actually All-Pervading & Space-like, imperishable, the Eternal Bliss itself, undifferentiated & undivided, partless, actionless, & free of all karmas.  The infinite Self is only one, & nothing other than itself can belong to itself.

[Ramana]

As with the proverbial “motion pictures on the cinema screen” so it is with the Self.  That alone exists, the pictures come & go.  If you hold on to the Self, you will not be deceived by the appearance of the pictures. Nor does it matter at all if the pictures appear or disappear.  Ignoring the Self, the unSelf-Realized ajnani thinks the World is real, just as ignoring the screen he sees merely the pictures, as if they existed apart from the screen.  If one knows that without the Seer there  is nothing to be Seen, just as there are no pictures without the screen, then one is not deluded.  The Self-Realized jnani knows that the screen & the pictures are only the Self.  With the pictures, the Self is in its “manifest” form.  Without the pictures the Self remains in the “unmanifest” form.  To the Self-Realized jnani it is quite immaterial if the Self is in the one form or the other.  He is always the Self.  But the unSelf-Realized ajnani seeing the jnani as if active gets confused.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 123

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

When we inquire “Who am I ?” we must see if there is someone else in “the picture” of your life. If we inquire, the Seer & the “picture” both vanish. What Form do you have ?  The World appears to have a Form. The Supreme is also assigned a Form. Perhaps it is a visualized form, or it may be a Form only abstractly conceived.  It is something regarded as “other” than the one undifferentiated Pure Existence. Anything “other” even to the slightest degree has some Form by which the differentiation is marked out. The World seems to have a Form.  Hence we call it a “World”.  So long as the Individual self is thought to have a Form, God too seems to have some Form, however abstract that might be.

For any objective experience, mental or sensed, the connection with the Self, which is of the nature of pure Consciousness alone, is a product of Delusion. The “I” is truly always free of all attributes, unassociated with any quality or entity, & ever NonObjective.  The Ignorance that imagines otherwise is purposeless.  That Ignorance merely creates Bondage in the midst of the Ever-Free, Suffering in the midst of Bliss, which is like drowning in a Mirage, the “waters” of which serve no purpose.  If the delusive attempts to connect the Self with what is not the Self are given up, the Mind rests in Brahman, the Absolute Self.  Such is “as if free from Bondage” for in Reality, That was never bound. The Self is ever Unborn & ever devoid of Duality.

[Ramana]

Seeing the World, the jnani sees the Self which is the substratum of all that is seen; the ajnani, whether he sees the World or not, is ignorant of his true Existence, the Self.  Take the example of moving pictures on the screen in the cinema-show.  What is there in front of you before the play begins ?  Merely the screen. On that screen you see the entire show, & for all appearances the pictures are real.  But go & try to take hold of them. What do you take hold of ?  Merely the screen on which the pictures appeared. After the play, when the pictures disappear, what remains ?  The screen again.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 122

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

t is obvious that all Illusion is for the “I”, the source.  The “I”-notion comes first.  Find the root of this “I”-assumption, or “I”-notion.  Trace your own sense of existence, seemingly individualized, to its Core & see what is there. Who are you ?  If in Truth, you have always been & always will be the undifferentiated Existence, the real Self, your supposed Bondage has never been real.  If “who” you are is this real Self, of the nature of Existence-Consciousness-Bliss, all that has been apparently experienced by you has indeed NOT been experienced by you at all.  Your real Existence has remained ever still, completely detached, ever Formless, & without state or condition.

Duality appears only in those states and is thus not real, for what is real must be real always. By relinquishing the superimposition of the known on the knower, one abides as the Non-Dual Knower, the unceasing Consciousness, always. Prior to the discrimination of the Self and the non-Self, one may think that the Absolute does not exist, one may think that it is not experienced, or one may doubt that it alone exists. After such discriminating inquiry, what was thought of as an individual self is known to be only Brahman, and there is no individual self, or mind, which so thought. Upon such inquiry, the experiential knowledge is that only the Self, Brahman, is, and the individual and the mind are only Brahman and nothing else.

[Ramana]

Why worry yourself about the World & what happens to it after Self-Realization ?  First realize the Self.  What does it matter if the World is perceived or not ?  Do you gain anything to help you in your quest for Self-Knowledge by the non-perception of the World during Deep Dreamless Sleep ?  Conversely, what would you lose now by the perception of the World ?  It is quite immaterial to the Self-Realized jnani or ajnani if he perceives the World or not.  It is seen by both, but their view-points differ.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 121

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

In our experience there are important differences between Illusion & Reality. When we experience Illusion, the Reality does not change. When there is the Illusory Ego, it is only imagined. The Real Self has not been transformed, & a 2nd “self” has not been added to it. If you assume yourself to be an Individual, upon which is based supposition upon supposition, all the suppositions have the Triad (Jagat-Jiva-Paramatman: the Universe, the Individual, & the Supreme Self) woven in them.  If you seem to be engaged in Illusion, trace this to its source.

The Self is by analogy said by the Wise to be like sunlight, while the Mind is like a crystal.  The various manifest experiences are like the colors seen in the crystal.  The significance is that all objects are seen in the Mind only by the Light of the Self.  Objects of knowledge, sensed or mental, appear only in the Waking & Dream States. When these States of Mind (Waking & Dream) are not present, no such things are experienced.  Yet the Knower is always the Knower, never ceasing.  Unlike all that is unreal, the Knower is only Formless Consciousness.

[Ramana]

The main qualities of the ordinary Mind are the gunas: tamas & rajas [sloth & excitement].  Hence that Mind is full of egoistic desires & weaknesses.  But the jnani’s Mind is of the guna sattva [pure harmony] & formless, functioning in the subtle “sheath” of knowledge through which he keeps contact with the World.  His desires are therefore also pure.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 120

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

You can never actually be other than That (Brahman).  It is only Ignorance when you imagine otherwise. If you imagine there is an “I”, then Multiplicity appears.  The Multiplicity is the triad of Jagat-Jiva-Paramatman: the Universe, the Individual, & the Supreme. These 3 appear as if differentiated from each other. Sri Ramana says that the best is remaining devoid of the Egoassumption. Then, those 3 are no longer 3. They were never actually 3, but they seemed to be 3. All Duality, Triads, & Multiplicity are a seeming appearance that has made no difference to the differenceless Reality.

The Mind cannot conceive the Self, yet the Mind has no existence apart from the Self. The Self can neither be accepted nor rejected by any of the Minds. That which cannot be accepted or rejected by the Mind is Brahman.  That is truly the “I”.  Brahman & the Self are One. The Mind & its modifications, in the form of thoughts, modes, & states, are limited.  The Self, unlike the Mind, is not of limited knowledge, for Supreme Knowledge is its True Nature.  That Supreme Knowledge is unmodified Consciousness itself, which is the Self itself. The Self has no Ignorance, just as light has no darkness. It is also without change, without impurity, ever beyond conception, forever un-sensed, & never of a material nature.

[Ramana]

The aham-vritti [Ego-“I” -thought, the sense of Individuality] does not function in the Self-Realized jnani at all.  The jnani’s real nature is the Self itself, because he is one & identical with the Undifferentiated, Pure Consciousness that is truly Brahman, the Absolute, & there is no Brahman other than Consciousness.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 119

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

All of the Wise agree that the Ego should be eliminated. Does the Ego exist ?  Questioning within yourself, “Who am I ?” to see what it is that seems to be an Individual being, trying to get to the very root of that.  Such is the sure path to Self-Realization. Getting to the very root of this Individuality is the certain way to make it disappear. That which you are always is the Self, which is the undifferentiated Existence.

The Self does not have a Body. In this lies the great freedom of the Self. The Body does not possess, or have as an attribute, the Self.  The attributes of the Body are not the attributes of the Self. The Body is a Form. The Self is Formless. The Formless does not have a Form in any manner. The Self is Infinite & Space-like, ever the same, & bodiless. The Infinite does not wear a Body, & the Space-like has no Form. The Body does not possess the Self, & the Self does not possess a Body.

All of the apparent individual minds are pervaded by this one Consciousness within, which is the Self. So, there is no one else who knows or who does not know. The “I” is truly the Absolute, Brahman, all-knowing and all-pervading. This “I” pervades and illumines the mind, and the mind pervades and illumines all things ever experienced. Thus, this “I” is the illuminator and pervader of all. This Self is the witness of all the objects of the mind, which are subtle thought, and all the objects conceived as external, as well. This includes being the witness of all other minds conceived as existing within the mind. Thus, the Self is the witness of all.

[Ramana]

The appearance of the Ego in any form, either in the Self-Realized jnani or ajnani, is itself an experience.  But to the ajnani who is deluded into thinking that the Waking State & the World are real, the Ego also appears to be “real”.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 118

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

The Existence of the Self is self-evident. It shines as the Truth revealed, as soon as any vestiges of the assumption of existing as an Individual vanish. Pure Existence is Absolute, invariable, & 1withouta2nd.  Pure Existence is not in relation to anything else whatsoever. For the Self, there is nothing else whatsoever at any time. Un differentiated Existence is the Reality. It is this very same undifferentiated, Absolute Existence that is revealed by Sri Raman Maharshi’s Teaching.

All the objects of knowledge change.  All that are described as “mine” (mamakara) & the Ego too (ahamkara) cannot illumine themselves nor can they illumine each other. The Self is different from them, being the Unchanging, illuminating Consciousness.  This Consciousness is truly one’s only Identity. Therefore there can never truly be Bondage. One Non-Dual Self alone exists.  The Self is the Undivided Consciousness. The Self is the only Knower in all.  There are not different kinds of knowers, such as higher & lower knowers, since the Minds of all are pervaded by the one Consciousness within, which is the Self.  This is the “I” of all.

The Self is not affected by the actions of the Body. It does not act, move, or change by the results of the motions & actions of the Body. Absorption in this Knowledge alone constitutes the truly still or actionless state. This alone is truly Liberation from karma, which can never be achieved within the context of the “I am the Body” notion & its corollary concept “I am the Doer.”  All physical experience, from birth to death, inclusive of everything between, is only for the Body. The Self is free of all of it & without Birth or Death. The Body is inert & not endowed with Consciousness. The Self is Existence-Consciousness and is never nonexistent or insentient. Existence-Consciousness plus bodily definition is called “Life” which, not being Eternal or True, has a Death.

[Ramana]

The Undifferentiated Consciousness of Pure Existence is what you really are.  From Consciousness there arises the “I exist” as the primary datum of one’s experience.  By itself it is completely pure in character.  It is in this form of pristine purity, uncontaminated by the gunas: rajas & tamas [activity & inertia], that the “I” appears to subsist in the Self-Realized jnani.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 117

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

Concepts of Brahman do not correspond to Brahman, & Brahman is utterly transcendent of all that.  Similar is the case with the concepts about anything else, though the “anything else,” too, is really only of the nature of Brahman.  We do best to remain without differentiation & without doubt, as the Supreme, the Absolute, which is Brahman. The Ego has no life of its own.

The Individual self or “I” is not different from the real Self, which is Brahman. Meditation on the Self is declared to be without Time, Space, Direction, or Causation since the Self is without these things. The Self itself is to be realized as Timeless, & the Realization, being of the same nature, is Timeless. The Self is to be realized as locationless & spaceless since it is bodiless.  The Knowledge, itself being of the same nature, is also bodiless & without regard to place. The Self itself is without Causation, being Uncreated & unborn.  The Realization, being of the same nature, need not wait for circumstances & is not an attempt to produce the Self anew.  But the Realization is a realizing of what the Self truly is.  Let the Mind thus turn within, immersing itself in Self-Inquiry, absorbing itself in Knowledge, thereby losing its own form as it searches inwardly for its Source.  In this is great Bliss & Immortality.

[Ramana]

The ordinary man sees things “outside” himself.  He is separate from the World, separate from his own deeper Truth, separate from the Truth that supports him & what he sees.  The man who has realized the Supreme Truth of his own Existence realizes that it is the one Supreme Reality that is there behind him, behind the World. In fact, he is aware of the One, as the Real, the Self in all selves, in all things, Eternal & un-changing in all that is impermanent & changing.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 116

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

Our approach to Self-Inquiry will not bear fruit based on what concepts are conceived along the way in the attempt to grasp spiritual Truth.  Rather it is that Self-Knowledge is revealed precisely in proportion to the concepts we actually relinquish. The fruit does not come with new names or new ideas about the World, the Supreme, & the Individual, but rather with the abandonment of those notions.  We abandon or question the very “I” who has those notions.  Always look toward the Knower. In Him lies True Knowledge.  In the Known is found only the “mirror image” of whatever conceptual definition is given to the Knower.  Self-Inquiry has to go beyond concepts to direct nonverbal & nonthought experience rather than conceptual steps.

If the Supreme Self is regarded as an object of knowledge, such is a superimposition of Ignorance, or Imagination. True Knowledge is when such ignorance, or super imposition is negated like the case with the Rope & the Illusion of the Snake. The conceptions of “me” (ahamkara) & “mine” (mamakara) attributed to the Self are the manifestations of Ignorance. They are superimpositions upon the Self, which is only One, with neither Individuality nor any experience or thing possessed by an Individual. The Individual self is thought to be the Seer, Hearer, Thinker, Knower, & such. In reality, it is Brahman, the Imperishable, Indivisible, Non-Dual Self.

[Ramana]

The ordinary man lives in the Mind unaware of himself in the Self.  The Self-Realized Sage lives in the Self.  When he moves about & deals with men & things, he knows that what he sees is not separate from the one Supreme Reality, Brahman which he realized as his own Self, the Real.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 115

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 115

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

There is precision to the spiritual path & Self-Inquiry, but there are not conceptual steps to lay out a follow like a recipe. The instructions, as given by the Wise Sages, include great detail regarding how to inquire & how to transcend the Mind, the Body, & the Ego. But when put into practice these stages or “steps” are of a very formless nature. Tracing out the steps by which those before you have become liberated is as an Upanishad has declared, “Like trying to trace the tracks of birds in the sky.”

The Self has nothing to accept or reject & there is nothing or no one else to accept or reject the Self, to think the Self is or that it is not.  Such is the Truth regarding the Self. The Mind becomes the object, the instrument or means of knowing, the actor, the actions, & the results in a Dream.  Just so is the case in the Waking State. The Real Self is different from the Mind & all these things that the Mind becomes. The Self is without interior & exterior, such as the Mind and the World.  The Self is homogenous Consciousness.  Know the Self by ceasing the attribution of anything exterior or interior to the Self.  Remembrance & forgetfulness, including remembrance & forgetfulness of the Self, are also only of the Mind.  Both remembrance & forgetfulness are products of Ignorance & do not touch the Self.  Cease to regard the Self as a known or unknown Object.

[Ramana]

If the Mind subsides, the whole World subsides. Mind is the cause of all “this”.  If the Mind subsides, the Natural State presents itself.

The Self proclaims itself at all times as “I”. The Self is selfluminous.  The Self is here. All this is That.  We are in That only.  Being in it, why search for it ?  Sages say: “‘Making the vision absorbed in Self-Knowledge, one sees the World as Brahman.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 114

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

Beyond any words used, such as “Who am I ?”, Self-Inquiry is more a matter of experiencing the fact of your Existence.  This Existence does not depend on words to be r to be experienced.  Self-Inquiry is concerned with & takes place entirely within Existence. Just as there is no need to develop trust in the sleep state, we do not need to develop trust in the Truth of your Existence.  We do not need to develop trust in our Existence, the natural nature of Self-Inquiry is inherent in us.  Furthermore, in both sleep & Self-Inquiry, the “Body” is put of the picture.  But we still exist.  Based upon the nature of our Existence & our experience, we can & must discern what that Existence is.  The ability to know itself is intrinsic to the Existence.  We are not dealing with something completely unknown.  We actually deal with what is best known, the fact that we do certainly exist.

The superimposed veils the view of the underlying Reality. The superimposed is not a “reality” in & of itself, but is only a product of Imagination, the result of Ignorance.   The superimposed is like the Snake imagined to be present where there is a Rope. The Snake is not real & was not really “born”, but in Imagination it seems to be there.  As long as one is convinced that the Snake is there, the Rope is invisible to him.  If he removes that Snake Illusion with the Light of Knowledge, he sees the Rope alone as it is, which has been the only real thing the entire time. The Snake represents all that is attributed falsely to the Reality of the Absolute Self, such as the World, bodily form, various mental conceptions & tendencies, & Egoism.  For Non-Dual Existence there is no “other”. There is thus no difference or nondifference, no oneness or manyness, & no separate Knower or Doer or Experiencer.

[Ramana]

We go round and round in search of the Self saying, “Where is the Self ?  Where is it ?” until at last the dawn of Self-Knowledge is reached, & we say, “This is the Self, this is me.”  We should acquire that vision. When once that vision is reached, there will be no attachments even if one mixes with the World & moves about in it. When once you put on shoes, your feet do not feel the pain of walking on any number of stones or thorns on the way. You walk about without fear or care, even if there are mountains on the way. In the same way, everything will be natural to those who have attained Self-Knowledge. What is there apart from one’s own Self ?

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 113

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 113

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

As regards some analogy between falling asleep & Self-Inquiry, we can note that upon falling asleep we are not left wondering, “What about the World ?  Where is my I ?” & so on.  One can inquire & prove it to oneself.  But it may seem, in the case of sleep, that “it just happens.” Yet Self-Inquiry is not haphazard. Self-Inquiry always works because it is the Knowledge of Existence itself.  Analogy to sleep only holds as a pointer to the naturalness of both processes, & the comparable loss of a “World” in each case. We do not aim at a sleep experience in Self-Inquiry.

The Self is Non-Dual, 1withouta 2nd.  The Self is neither distinct from nor in relation to anything else, for it relinquishes Mis-identification with the Body & all that is objective.  So should one sever the Identification with the supposed Subject, which is the Ego. The Self’s Existence is independent of all & is different from all that is objective. The objectified “I” is the Ego. The superimposed objective portion of the “I”consciousness should be abandoned, for it is not actually the Self.  Negation of what is objective means also Negation of the Ego. W hat remains is that which is implied in the aphorism, “I am Brahman”, (aham brahmasmi).

[Ramana]

The Guru will say only what I am saying now.  He will not give you anything you have not already got.  It is impossible for anyone to get what he has not got already.  Even if he gets any such thing, it will go as it came.  What comes will also go.  What always exists will alone remain. The Guru cannot give you anything new, which you don’t have already. Removal of the notion that we have not realized the Self is all that is required.  We are always the Self only we don’t realize it.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 112

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 112

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

If asked about the benefits of Self-Inquiry, the Teacher must say: “Find out.” This is like a person asking, “If I go to sleep, will it be as good as you say it is ?”  You would tell such a person, “Go to sleep & find out.”  How can one give an analysis of sleep without going to sleep? When you fall asleep, no struggle is involved, but there is a relinquishment of the bodily orientation, the worldly orientation, etc., & you do that even without the comfort of pre-knowledge. You change the state of Mind by going to sleep, & yet your existence still remains. The actual process of doing so cannot be chalked out in concrete steps. It is similar with Self-Inquiry, inasmuch as a set of concrete steps cannot be chalked out.  The path is rather Formless but very natural.  When you fall asleep, you give up the World and the “I”-notion subsides. All of it is experienced as being very natural.  After you fall asleep, you do not wonder, “Where has the World gone ?” “Where is my ‘I’ ?”

All qualities, gross or subtle, ought to be negated from the Self, from one’s Identity, if one is to know the Self as it is.  Whatever be the qualities attributed to the Self, be they physical or mental, they are to be regarded as mere ornaments, which would not be regarded as the Identity of the one who wears them. If one rejects all that is objective from one’s Identity, one comes to the conclusion that the Self is the Knower free from all that is conceived & perceived.  In the same manner as one relinquishes Mis-identification with the Body & all that is objective, so should one sever the identification with the supposed Subject, which is the Ego.

[Ramana]

The concept about “reaching this Self-Realized state” is that there is a “goal” & a “path” to it.  But we are the “goal” or Peace always. To get rid of the notion that we are not Peace is all that is required.

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

Sri Ramana says, “The World is not seen, & no ‘I’-belief.”  Why is giving up the objective outlook mentioned ?  It is because, when we have an objectified view of things, inherent in that view, or perspective, there is some definition or set of definitions of the “I”.  There must be some definition of “I” so that the objective World can appear as it does to one. Those definitions should be abandoned. The best way to utterly relinquish the “I”-notion is to inquire to see if it actually exists. What you are attempting to negate then is not so much the word or the idea of “I”, but the assumed Individuality (jivata), the perspective of existing as a particularized thing.  Such is the base upon which the entire samsara (Illusion) rests.

The same Absolute Brahman appears according to one’s understanding as “Gos”, who is said to be the “Lord” who dispassionately distributes the results of karma.  Or else Brahman appears as the Witness, which is Consciousness in relation to all.  Or else Brahman appears as the attributeless, Eternal “I” of the nature of Indivisible, Non-Dual ExistenceConsciousness which alone exists, withouta2nd.  The Self has neither rise nor set, is neither in darkness nor illumined, but is always the spiritual Light, with nothing material or mental in its nature at all.  The distinction between the Self & oneself is due only to superimposition. This superimposition is like imagining different “holes” to be different “spaces” due to emphasizing the structure with the openings rather than perceiving the Space itself.

[Ramana]

There is a story about a lady who had a precious necklace round her neck.  Once in her excitement she forgot it & thought that the necklace was lost.  She became anxious & looked for it in her home but could not find it.  She asked her friends & neighbors if they knew anything about the necklace.  They did not.  At last a kind friend of hers told her to feel the necklace round her neck.  She found that it had all along been round her neck & she was happy.  When others asked her later if she had found the necklace which was lost, she said, “Yes, I have found it.”  She still felt that she had recovered a lost jewel.  Now did she lose it at all ?  It was all along round her neck.  But judge her feelings.  She was as happy as if she had recovered a lost jewel.  Similarly with us, we imagine that we will realize that Self some time, whereas we are never anything but the Self.

[The Teaching  of Non-Duality has been adapted from Master Nome, disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Sections appended below derive from Sri Ramana’s Teaching.]

For the Absolute Self there is nothing based on an “I”.  For the Absolute Self there is no World. This realization should be even while apparently awake. Sri Ramana Maharshi has emphasized that our Self-Inquiry & our knowledge should not consist of suppositions, however apparently conclusive those ideas may be.  Our knowledge should consist of the true Knowledge of Reality.  The revelation Truth comes by giving up the objective outlook, abandoning the Ego-notion, & knowing one’s Self.

The Self’s Existence is independent of all & is different from all that is objective. The objectified “I” is the Ego. The superimposed objective portion of the “I”consciousness should be abandoned, for it is not actually the Self.  Negation of what is objective means also Negation of the Ego. What remains is that which is implied in the aphorism, “I am Brahman“, (aham brahmasmi). Only Brahman can be itself, 1withouta2nd. That is the only true “I”.  Brahman is Unborn, Immortal, Imperishable, ageless, & all-comprehensive.

[Ramana]

If it were it true that you realize it later it means that you are not Self-Realized now. Absence of Realization in the present moment may be repeated at any moment in the future, for time is infinite.  So such Realization is impermanent.  But that is not true.  It is wrong to consider Realization to be impermanent.  Self-Realization is the true Eternal state which cannot change.

You are already That.  Time & Space cannot affect the Self.  Time & Space are in you.  So also all that you see around you is in you.

If the dearness of sleep were just rest for the body, a horizontal position would suffice, and there would be less interest in sleep. A person who is lying in a bed & who cannot sleep, even though the body is in a horizontal position, after some time, may become agitated. He wants her sleep. He wants to get rid of this “I” & this World. Though waking & sleeping are a natural cycle, we should remain in identity with the Absolute Self which is “I” less, which has no “I” arising.

True Knowledge is not experienced unless the prior ignorant conception is negated, just as the Snake-notion is destroyed to see the Rope. The Self, of the nature of Pure Consciousness, is self-existent & can never be negated. Egoism has its origin in Delusion & has for its object that which is only imagined.  Ego’s definitions are only thoughts. The discernment of “neti neti “not this, not this” negates the Ego’s very existence, along with its origin, its effects, & its imagined objects.
