In Non-Duality, the Absolute is known as Existence itself, or as Consciousness, itself. Meditations on the substrate, the background, the all-pervading One, and such are understood as steps and not the final Reality.

All differentiation is regarded as the misperception of a rope to be a snake; it is purely ignorance, or imagination, and never real at any time. There is no individuality, and the ego-death or destruction of that ignorant ego-assumption, with its concomitant ideas of all else, is by Knowledge.

The view of Qualified Non-Duality is that the Absolute is of the same nature as oneself, one’s self being of the same nature as it, though there are distinctions, such as a difference in vastness, steadiness of experience, and such. It is said to be as a glass of water and the ocean. They both are water, the same thing, yet they are not the same. One’s understanding can extend to the point of viewing the Absolute as a background of all, as a substrate of all, as that from which everything arises and to which all will return, & even as that which pervades everyone & everything with a distinction between the Pervader & the pervaded. There can be experience of union, but this will be followed by separation again, though there can be a memory of the union while differentiation resumes. The individual experiencer remains, for whom all else arises, who thinks, who feels, who acts, and such. With the view of qualified nonduality, spiritual practice will be one of attempting merger or union. The Absolute is viewed more impersonally, as a greater intelligence or as some all-pervading presence.

The Absolute may be regarded as something to which one will eventually return, but it is not regarded as the same as one’s own state now or as one’s nature. With such a view, spiritual practice is to maintain a relation to the Absolute with the knowledge that one was once part of that limitless Being and one may return to it, but, for now, one must seek to deepen one’s relation to that God. The Supreme is viewed as similar to a person, yet on a grander scale, but which has left its mark, spark, or a trace of itself in the individual. With qualified dualism as one’s view, spiritual practice aims at the strengthening of the relation with the Lord, the Supreme.

The deeper the experience, the more transcendent of notions it is and the more nondual it is. An unqualified dualistic view asserts that the Absolute is one thing and oneself another. There is a God, by whatever name called, and there is a separate soul, by whatever name called, and these are regarded as different in every respect. Though there may be similarities, such as both lasting forever, they are regarded as different as two distinct objects, as different as an elephant and a king, as in the Puranic story of the sage, Ribhu, and his disciple, Nidagha. With such an approach, one practices to establish some relation to the Supreme, the Lord, but there is no union or merger. Even in a heavenly realm, the distinction still persists.

The great sage, Adi Sankara, observed that one can hold any of 4our views. One can adhere to an unqualified dualistic view. This means sheer dualism without any exception. One can possess a view of qualified dualism. This is a belief in dualism with some exceptions. One may hold a view of qualified nondualism, that is, some nonduality while retaining some exceptions or dualisms. Or one can embrace pure, unqualified nonduality.

Regardless of what names are given to the Supreme, what symbols are used, and what practices are utilized, certain views are assumed around which all these revolve. These understandings, views, or beliefs pertain to the Absolute, the self, and what is regarded as real, which in many cases will be the world or worlds.

On a path of Self-Knowledge, Discrimination signifies the ability to discern what is true and also implies the ability to determine what is false or unreal. By so discerning, or discriminating, one pursues Truth to realize it and destroys the dream of illusion or ignorance.

Ignorance creates suffering. What destroys ignorance reveals blissful freedom, or Liberation. Ignorance is destroyed when one discerns that it is, indeed, ignorance and not the Truth. Ignorance exists and is binding only if one conjures it up and believes it. If, by Discrimination, one discerns its unreality, or false nature, it no longer binds and ceases to exist. In its place is found real Knowledge, which is Knowledge of the Reality itself.

Inquiring “Who am I?”, knowing oneself free of misidentification, and steady abidance as the Self always are the inner experiences of these.

It is impossible for Pure Existence to become other than what it is, for oneself to become other than the Self.  Thus there is no falling away from one’s nature into Maya (illusion), & there is no becoming the Self anew.  Sri Sankara revealed that one cannot become other than what one is, for if one becomes another, one is destroyed. Thus, just as one cannot become other than Brahman, one cannot become Brahman. Knowledge simply reveals the Truth.

Because the Intellect holds you at present, you are in the grip of the Intellect in the Waking State when you discuss matters.

Grace is needed for Self-Realization.  Grace is the Self.  Grace is not always manifest because of Ignorance prevailing.  With sincere study & trust in the Teaching, Grace will become manifest.  Trust, Grace, Light, Spirit, are all synonymous with the Self.

With no Delusion, there is no Birth, as no Cause means no Effect. If there is Freedom from Delusion, even the notion that one has been born is absent; so how can there be birth again when there has never been birth at all for the Self ?  “I” & “this” are non–existent in the Knowledge of the Self.  So the false notions, “I am this, this is mine, this is so, I am so, & another is not so,” –  these are also absent. One who has realized Self-Knowledge is, as the Maharshi states, though in the Waking State yet like one in Deep Dreamless Sleep.  Though perceiving the World, yet he does not; though acting, he is really actionless. The sign of the true Knowledge of the Supreme Truth is Liberation, complete Detachment from all that is unreal, & being ever Space-like.

[Ramana]

 The World consists of diverse Multiplicity, which is a function of the Mind.  The Mind shares the Reflected Light – the Light reflected from the Self.  Images in the Cinema are seen only in diffuse, artificial light, but not in a strong glare of a thick darkness.  So also the images the make up the “World” are perceptible only in the diffuse, reflected light of the Self through the darkness of Ignorance.  The World cannot be seen whether in pure Ignorance (not–knowing), as in Deep Dreamless Sleep , or in pure Light as in Self-Realization.  Ignorance is ever the cause of Multiplicity.

One should inwardly know, “The Body, Mind, & Ego are not ‘I’.  Nor are they mine.” Though all-pervading, the Self does not become attached, due to its Formlessness, even when appearing as if endowed with a Mind & a Body. The Self is ever the Absolute & Non-Dual.  The consideration of it as otherwise is due solely to Ignorance. The scriptures declare that one who remains in the certain Knowledge of Brahman is never born again. Birth is a Delusion.

[Ramana]

There is a World perceived.  That perception is only apparent.  The perception requires location for existence & light.  Such existence & light are simultaneous with the rise of the Mind.  So the “physical existence” & illumination are part of mental existence & illumination which in turn are not absolute for the Mind rises & sinks.  The Mind has its substratum in the Self, which is self-evident – that is – It’s Existence & self-luminosity are obvious.  That is Absolute Existence which continuous throughout Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep.

All the perceptions of the 3 States [Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep] belong to Illusion & not to the Self.  The 3 States have no existence independent of the Self, yet they do not have any existence dependent upon the Self.  That which is the knower of the 3 States, called “the 4^th” is really the 1–without–a–2^nd.  The Ego, the Mind, & embodiment are Illusions. Accepted as real, they are productive of suffering. The changeless Self is not modified into or by them.

[Ramana]

Self-Knowledge is obvious & yet can be hidden by the wrong identification of the Self with the Ego–Mind & Body in a World. Putting an end to these thoughts allows the Self to shine forth of itself.  Find the basis if the thoughts.  All if them are strung on the single “I”–thought.  Subdue that “I”–thought & other thoughts also subside.

There is no use in “knowing” other things besides the Self.  If the Self is known, all else becomes known.  Self-Realization is one’s primary & sole duty.

The Self is Unborn, ever only One, Imperishable, always Unattached, Omnipresent, Space-like, & ever free.  Without a body & Uncaused, the Self is said to be “Unborn”. Unborn, the Self, the only true “I” , is ever Brahman.  Being Unborn, the Self is devoid of age & is deathless. Non-Dual, with no Cause & no Effect, the Self reposes, contented, in its own Bliss, Free & at Peace. Of the Nature of non–dependent Bliss, existing as the perfect Fullness within, not the result of anything, but of the very nature of Pure Existence, unmixed with Illusions, the Self remains forever.

In comparing oneself to a Sage, the difference “he” & “I” are the obstacles to Self-Knowledge,  jnana.

Sankara in Vivekachudamani says that after the dissolution of the physical “sheath” the liberated man becomes like “water poured into water & oil into oil.”

It is a State in which there is neither Bondage nor Liberation. Taking another Body means throwing a veil, however subtle, upon Reality, which is Bondage. Liberation is Absolute & irrevocable.

The all-pervasive, formless Brahman is the innermost, formless Self. If misidentification with the body, mind, and ego ceases, this becomes self-evident. All forms, all objects of knowledge, all that appear to come into being, are as unreal as what is seen in a dream—the illusion of ignorance. Duality has no real existence. If this is realized, the Knowledge thus realized is objectless and eternal. The “I” is Brahman. The Self, of the nature of Being-Consciousness-Bliss, is always and can never actually be veiled.

There is really no Liberation, so where are the Liberated ?  Liberation is synonymous with the Self.

The Self-Realized jnani is not conscious of Liberation or Bondage.  Bondage, Liberation, etc. are terms for use by an ajnani  in the course shaking off Ignorance.  There is only Liberation & nothing else.

All modes of Mind & corresponding conduct are the Delusions born of the “I am the Body” belief, with its associated idea of Individuals inhabiting those Bodies conceived as oneself & others. Believing the Self to be tainted by the defects of, & defined & bound by, the Body, Mind, & Ego is Ignorance. Without these Mis-identifications, one is like clear, Vast Space. Space-like Existence-Consciousness is the Self, &nd this Self is itself the very substance of its Knowledge. The Self cannot be an object of knowledge, just as it cannot be an object of Senses. It has no Form.

The Self-Realized jnani laughs with the laughing, plays with the playful, sings with those who sing, keeping time to the song.  What does he lose ?  His presence is like a pure, transparent mirror.  It reflects the image exactly as it is.  But the jnani, who is only a mirror, is unaffected by actions.  How can a mirror, or the stand on which it is mounted, be affected by the reflections ?  Nothing affects them since they are mere supports.

On the other hand, the Actors in the World –  the Doers of all acts, the un–Self-Realized ajnanis  –  they must decide for themselves what song & what action is for the welfare of the world, what is in accordance with the Sciptures, and what is practical.

Self-Realized jnanis are the same in any state or condition, since they know Reality, the Truth.  In their daily routines the jnanis act only for others. Not a single action is done for themselves. I have already told you many times that just as there are people whose profession is to mourn for a fee, so also the jnanis do things for the sake of others withou detachment, without themselves being affected.

The descriptions of the Self & the negation of attributes & limited definitions of the Self, such as that it is bodiless, non-sensory, without Life-Energy (prana), free from thought, etc., would be meaningless if they referred to some sort of other Self different from the aspirant’s own True Self.  There are not 2 selves in the same one being.  There is 1 Self, & when known as it is, it is Infinite & Eternal, not a being, but just Pure Existence. To realize this, the Knowledge of oneself as the Self, free from the Body & such, must become as certain & steady as the belief of a human being that he is a human being, which a human being does not doubt on any occasion.

Friendship, equality, kindness, Happiness & such other attitudes become natural to the Self-Realized jnani. Affection towards the good, kindness towards the helpless, Happiness in doing good deeds, forgiveness towards the wicked, all such things are natural characteristics of the jnani.

One can know Absolute Being, or Brahman, only by being identical with Brahman.  He cannot know That if it is different from himself.  The Self, being Non-Dual Consciousness, cannot know an “other”.  The Self, being the sole-existent Consciousness, cannot be known by another.  The Self alone can know itself.  There would be no use for the countless descriptions of the Absolute by the Scriptures & the holy Sages, & no use for the negation of all limited definitions, if That, the Self, were other than one’s own Self.  What purpose would be served by speaking of something that could never be experienced at all ?  The negation of attributes & limited definitions of Brahman, as given in such spiritual instructions, must be understood to be the negation of attributes and limited definitions of the Self. If they are to be applied to oneself, they involve the negation of superimposition upon the Self of what is not the Self.

[Ramana]

The jnani appreciates the distinctions referring to sound, taste, form, smell, etc. , but he always perceives & experiences the One Reality in all of them.  That is why he has no preferences.  Whether he moves about, or talks, or acts, it is all the One Reality in which he acts or moves or talks.  He sees nothing as apart from the One Supreme Truth.

The definition of oneself as an Individual, as an embodied being, is false.

Consciousness is self–luminous.  By its Light all appear. When all disappear, Consciousness is still the same. The Known has no Light of its own.  By Self-Inquiry one should trace this Light inward to realize that which is perpetually illuminating. That ever-shining, colorless Light illumines the Senses & the Mind, but can never be seen by the senses or envisioned by the Mind.  Knowledge, or direct experience, of this Light consists of identity with it. Changeless, blemishless, ever free, immovable, eternal, bodiless, & imperishable, without Ignorance or Knowledge, the Self is of the Nature of Consciousness alone. Being, the Self, is the sole, ever-existent, Non-Dual Reality.

[Ramana]

The Self-Realized jnani sees perceptual differences, but only as appearances. He sees them as not separate from the True & the Real with which he is one.  Equality is the true sign of jnana.  The very term “equality” implies the existence of differences.  Equality is a unity that the jnani perceives in all differences.  Equality does not mean ignorance of distinctions.  When you have Self-Realization you can see that these differences are very superficial, that they are not at all substantial or permanent, & what is essential in all these appearances is the one Real Truth.

The Self alone is capable of knowing itself  & in truth there is no “other” to do so.  The essential practice of Self-Knowledge, for this Self-Realization, consists of Knowledge, which in practical application takes the form of the Self-Inquiry summed up in the phrase “Who am I ?”

One who knows himself truly knows, “I am without a Body” & “I am not engaged in any bodily activity”, “I am without the Senses”, & “I am not engaged in any sensing.”  “I do not have speech, & I do not speak. I do not have Life-Energy (Prana), & I neither live nor die. I do not have a Mind, & I never think.  I am not an “I”, or an Individual being, & there is nothing I become.”

Such a Sage need not “think” all the above statements in so many words.  It is so, & expression has merely been given to such here to indicate that which is actually indescribable & of the nature of Silent Knowledge.  Since the Eternal Self is always of the nature of Consciousness, it is ever without Ignorance.  Similarly, the Self is without knowledge conceived as a state or mode of Mind.  The Self  has no states or phases, and, therefore, is beyond both ignorance and knowledge. The only true Knowledge is the Self, itself.

[Ramana]

There is an illustration for the Illusion or super–imposition involving 2 friends who fell sleep side by side. One of them dreamt that both of them had gone on a long journey & that they had had strange experiences. On waking up he recapitulated them & asked his friend if it was not so. The other one simply ridiculed him saying that it was only his Dream & could not affect the other.  So it is with the un–Self-Realized ajnani who super–imposes his Illusory ideas on others.

We have never actually experienced sensing. We have experienced only the state of Mind that composes those Senses.  All of that has just been in the Mind. The entire objective scene, even if thought to be external & even the thought “that it is external,” is also part of this instrument of the Mind. Who sees the Mind is the Self, formless, without instrument, without form, without shape, without definition, & without a Seer, without difference, absolutely One, perfectly Full, & Limitless. There is no “space” for anything else, other, or outside. There is no division, such as the Seer & the Seen. Only he who knows himself as he really is knows what the seen is.  Otherwise, one merely thinks of what one sees.

There is no Knower other than the Self.  This is the all-comprehensive Knower, which is the Absolute Consciousness itself, ever-free, homogeneous, Non-Dual & Space-like, & which is realized when the illusory objective aspect has been negated. The Knower can never be the Known.  As all that is Known is subject to destruction, but the essence of the Knower can never not exist.

[Ramana]

Since the un–Self-Realized ajnani, though he is not really the Doer, imagines himself to be the Doer & considers the actions of the Body to be his own actions.  He thinks the Self-Realized jnani to be similarly acting when the Body is  active.  But the Self-Realized jnani himself knows the Truth & is not confused.  The state of a Self-Realized jnani cannot be determined by the ajnani & therefore the question troubles only the ajnani & never arises for the jnani.   If one is a Doer he must determine the nature of the actions. The Self cannot be the Doer.  Find out who is the Doer [said to be the Body, is contrarywise –  God  –  depending on the perspective taken up] & the Self is revealed.
