REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 121

In our experience there are important differences between Illusion & Reality. When we experience Illusion, the Reality does not change. When there is the Illusory Ego, it is only imagined. The Real Self has not been transformed, & a 2^nd “self” has not been added to it. If you assume yourself to be an Individual, upon which is based supposition upon supposition, all the suppositions have the Triad (Jagat-Jiva-Paramatman: the Universe, the Individual, & the Supreme Self) woven in them.  If you seem to be engaged in Illusion, trace this to its source.

The Self is by analogy said by the Wise to be like sunlight, while the Mind is like a crystal.  The various manifest experiences are like the colors seen in the crystal.  The significance is that all objects are seen in the Mind only by the Light of the Self.  Objects of knowledge, sensed or mental, appear only in the Waking & Dream States. When these States of Mind (Waking & Dream) are not present, no such things are experienced.  Yet the Knower is always the Knower, never ceasing.  Unlike all that is unreal, the Knower is only Formless Consciousness.

The main qualities of the ordinary Mind are the gunas: tamas & rajas [sloth & excitement].  Hence that Mind is full of egoistic desires & weaknesses.  But the jnani’s Mind is of the guna sattva [pure harmony] & formless, functioning in the subtle “sheath” of knowledge through which he keeps contact with the World.  His desires are therefore also pure.

You can never actually be other than That (Brahman).  It is only Ignorance when you imagine otherwise. If you imagine there is an “I”, then Multiplicity appears.  The Multiplicity is the triad of Jagat-Jiva-Paramatman: the Universe, the Individual, & the Supreme. These 3 appear as if differentiated from each other. Sri Ramana says that the best is remaining devoid of the Ego–assumption. Then, those 3 are no longer 3. They were never actually 3, but they seemed to be 3. All Duality, Triads, & Multiplicity are a seeming appearance that has made no difference to the difference–less Reality.

The Mind cannot conceive the Self, yet the Mind has no existence apart from the Self. The Self can neither be accepted nor rejected by any of the Minds. That which cannot be accepted or rejected by the Mind is Brahman.  That is truly the “I”.  Brahman & the Self are One. The Mind & its modifications, in the form of thoughts, modes, & states, are limited.  The Self, unlike the Mind, is not of limited knowledge, for Supreme Knowledge is its True Nature.  That Supreme Knowledge is unmodified Consciousness itself, which is the Self itself. The Self has no Ignorance, just as light has no darkness. It is also without change, without impurity, ever beyond conception, forever un-sensed, & never of a material nature.

The aham-vritti [Ego-“I” -thought, the sense of Individuality] does not function in the Self-Realized jnani at all.  The jnani’s real nature is the Self itself, because he is one & identical with the Undifferentiated, Pure Consciousness that is truly Brahman, the Absolute, & there is no Brahman other than Consciousness.

All of the Wise agree that the Ego should be eliminated. Does the Ego exist ?  Questioning within yourself, “Who am I ?” to see what it is that seems to be an Individual being, trying to get to the very root of that.  Such is the sure path to Self-Realization. Getting to the very root of this Individuality is the certain way to make it disappear. That which you are always is the Self, which is the un–differentiated Existence.

The Self does not have a Body. In this lies the great freedom of the Self. The Body does not possess, or have as an attribute, the Self.  The attributes of the Body are not the attributes of the Self. The Body is a Form. The Self is Form–less. The Form–less does not have a Form in any manner. The Self is Infinite & Space-like, ever the same, & bodi–less. The Infinite does not wear a Body, & the Space-like has no Form. The Body does not possess the Self, & the Self does not possess a Body.

All of the apparent individual minds are pervaded by this one Consciousness within, which is the Self. So, there is no one else who knows or who does not know. The “I” is truly the Absolute, Brahman, all-knowing and all-pervading. This “I” pervades and illumines the mind, and the mind pervades and illumines all things ever experienced. Thus, this “I” is the illuminator and pervader of all. This Self is the witness of all the objects of the mind, which are subtle thought, and all the objects conceived as external, as well. This includes being the witness of all other minds conceived as existing within the mind. Thus, the Self is the witness of all.

The appearance of the Ego in any form, either in the Self-Realized jnani or ajnani, is itself an experience.  But to the ajnani who is deluded into thinking that the Waking State & the World are real, the Ego also appears to be “real”.

The Existence of the Self is self-evident. It shines as the Truth revealed, as soon as any vestiges of the assumption of existing as an Individual vanish. Pure Existence is Absolute, invariable, & 1–without–a–2^nd.  Pure Existence is not in relation to anything else whatsoever. For the Self, there is nothing else whatsoever at any time. Un– differentiated Existence is the Reality. It is this very same un–differentiated, Absolute Existence that is revealed by Sri Raman Maharshi’s Teaching.

All the objects of knowledge change.  All that are described as “mine” (mamakara) & the Ego too (ahamkara) cannot illumine themselves nor can they illumine each other. The Self is different from them, being the Unchanging, illuminating Consciousness.  This Consciousness is truly one’s only Identity. Therefore there can never truly be Bondage. One Non-Dual Self alone exists.  The Self is the Undivided Consciousness. The Self is the only Knower in all.  There are not different kinds of knowers, such as higher & lower knowers, since the Minds of all are pervaded by the one Consciousness within, which is the Self.  This is the “I” of all.

The Self is not affected by the actions of the Body. It does not act, move, or change by the results of the motions & actions of the Body. Absorption in this Knowledge alone constitutes the truly still or actionless state. This alone is truly Liberation from karma, which can never be achieved within the context of the “I am the Body” notion & its corollary concept “I am the Doer.”  All physical experience, from birth to death, inclusive of everything between, is only for the Body. The Self is free of all of it & without Birth or Death. The Body is inert & not endowed with Consciousness. The Self is Existence-Consciousness and is never non–existent or insentient. Existence-Consciousness plus bodily definition is called “Life” which, not being Eternal or True, has a Death.

The Undifferentiated Consciousness of Pure Existence is what you really are.  From Consciousness there arises the “I exist” as the primary datum of one’s experience.  By itself it is completely pure in character.  It is in this form of pristine purity, uncontaminated by the gunas: rajas & tamas [activity & inertia], that the “I” appears to subsist in the Self-Realized jnani.

Concepts of Brahman do not correspond to Brahman, & Brahman is utterly transcendent of all that.  Similar is the case with the concepts about anything else, though the “anything else,” too, is really only of the nature of Brahman.  We do best to remain without differentiation & without doubt, as the Supreme, the Absolute, which is Brahman. The Ego has no life of its own.

The Individual self or “I” is not different from the real Self, which is Brahman. Meditation on the Self is declared to be without Time, Space, Direction, or Causation since the Self is without these things. The Self itself is to be realized as Timeless, & the Realization, being of the same nature, is Timeless. The Self is to be realized as location–less & space–less since it is bodiless.  The Knowledge, itself being of the same nature, is also bodiless & without regard to place. The Self itself is without Causation, being Uncreated & unborn.  The Realization, being of the same nature, need not wait for circumstances & is not an attempt to produce the Self anew.  But the Realization is a realizing of what the Self truly is.  Let the Mind thus turn within, immersing itself in Self-Inquiry, absorbing itself in Knowledge, thereby losing its own form as it searches inwardly for its Source.  In this is great Bliss & Immortality.

The ordinary man sees things “outside” himself.  He is separate from the World, separate from his own deeper Truth, separate from the Truth that supports him & what he sees.  The man who has realized the Supreme Truth of his own Existence realizes that it is the one Supreme Reality that is there behind him, behind the World. In fact, he is aware of the One, as the Real, the Self in all selves, in all things, Eternal & un-changing in all that is impermanent & changing.

Our approach to Self-Inquiry will not bear fruit based on what concepts are conceived along the way in the attempt to grasp spiritual Truth.  Rather it is that Self-Knowledge is revealed precisely in proportion to the concepts we actually relinquish. The fruit does not come with new names or new ideas about the World, the Supreme, & the Individual, but rather with the abandonment of those notions.  We abandon or question the very “I” who has those notions.  Always look toward the Knower. In Him lies True Knowledge.  In the Known is found only the “mirror image” of whatever conceptual definition is given to the Knower.  Self-Inquiry has to go beyond concepts to direct non–verbal & non–thought experience rather than conceptual steps.

If the Supreme Self is regarded as an object of knowledge, such is a super–imposition of Ignorance, or Imagination. True Knowledge is when such ignorance, or super– imposition is negated like the case with the Rope & the Illusion of the Snake. The conceptions of “me” (ahamkara) & “mine” (mamakara) attributed to the Self are the manifestations of Ignorance. They are super–impositions upon the Self, which is only One, with neither Individuality nor any experience or thing possessed by an Individual. The Individual self is thought to be the Seer, Hearer, Thinker, Knower, & such. In reality, it is Brahman, the Imperishable, Indivisible, Non-Dual Self.

[Ramana]

The ordinary man lives in the Mind unaware of himself in the Self.  The Self-Realized Sage lives in the Self.  When he moves about & deals with men & things, he knows that what he sees is not separate from the one Supreme Reality, Brahman which he realized as his own Self, the Real.

There is precision to the spiritual path & Self-Inquiry, but there are not conceptual steps to lay out a follow like a recipe. The instructions, as given by the Wise Sages, include great detail regarding how to inquire & how to transcend the Mind, the Body, & the Ego. But when put into practice these stages or “steps” are of a very formless nature. Tracing out the steps by which those before you have become liberated is as an Upanishad has declared, “Like trying to trace the tracks of birds in the sky.”

The Self has nothing to accept or reject & there is nothing or no one else to accept or reject the Self, to think the Self is or that it is not.  Such is the Truth regarding the Self. The Mind becomes the object, the instrument or means of knowing, the actor, the actions, & the results in a Dream.  Just so is the case in the Waking State. The Real Self is different from the Mind & all these things that the Mind becomes. The Self is without interior & exterior, such as the Mind and the World.  The Self is homogenous Consciousness.  Know the Self by ceasing the attribution of anything exterior or interior to the Self.  Remembrance & forgetfulness, including remembrance & forgetfulness of the Self, are also only of the Mind.  Both remembrance & forgetfulness are products of Ignorance & do not touch the Self.  Cease to regard the Self as a known or unknown Object.

[Ramana]

If the Mind subsides, the whole World subsides. Mind is the cause of all “this”.  If the Mind subsides, the Natural State presents itself.

The Self proclaims itself at all times as “I”. The Self is self–luminous.  The Self is here. All this is That.  We are in That only.  Being in it, why search for it ?  Sages say: “‘Making the vision absorbed in Self-Knowledge, one sees the World as Brahman.”

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 113

As regards some analogy between falling asleep & Self-Inquiry, we can note that upon falling asleep we are not left wondering, “What about the World ?  Where is my I ?” & so on.  One can inquire & prove it to oneself.  But it may seem, in the case of sleep, that “it just happens.” Yet Self-Inquiry is not haphazard. Self-Inquiry always works because it is the Knowledge of Existence itself.  Analogy to sleep only holds as a pointer to the naturalness of both processes, & the comparable loss of a “World” in each case. We do not aim at a sleep experience in Self-Inquiry.

The Self is Non-Dual, 1–without–a 2^nd.  The Self is neither distinct from nor in relation to anything else, for it relinquishes Mis-identification with the Body & all that is objective.  So should one sever the Identification with the supposed Subject, which is the Ego. The Self’s Existence is independent of all & is different from all that is objective. The objectified “I” is the Ego. The superimposed objective portion of the “I”–consciousness should be abandoned, for it is not actually the Self.  Negation of what is objective means also Negation of the Ego. W hat remains is that which is implied in the aphorism, “I am Brahman”, (aham brahmasmi).

[Ramana]

The Guru will say only what I am saying now.  He will not give you anything you have not already got.  It is impossible for anyone to get what he has not got already.  Even if he gets any such thing, it will go as it came.  What comes will also go.  What always exists will alone remain. The Guru cannot give you anything new, which you don’t have already. Removal of the notion that we have not realized the Self is all that is required.  We are always the Self only we don’t realize it.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 112

If asked about the benefits of Self-Inquiry, the Teacher must say: “Find out.” This is like a person asking, “If I go to sleep, will it be as good as you say it is ?”  You would tell such a person, “Go to sleep & find out.”  How can one give an analysis of sleep without going to sleep? When you fall asleep, no struggle is involved, but there is a relinquishment of the bodily orientation, the worldly orientation, etc., & you do that even without the comfort of pre-knowledge. You change the state of Mind by going to sleep, & yet your existence still remains. The actual process of doing so cannot be chalked out in concrete steps. It is similar with Self-Inquiry, inasmuch as a set of concrete steps cannot be chalked out.  The path is rather Formless but very natural.  When you fall asleep, you give up the World and the “I”-notion subsides. All of it is experienced as being very natural.  After you fall asleep, you do not wonder, “Where has the World gone ?” “Where is my ‘I’ ?”

All qualities, gross or subtle, ought to be negated from the Self, from one’s Identity, if one is to know the Self as it is.  Whatever be the qualities attributed to the Self, be they physical or mental, they are to be regarded as mere ornaments, which would not be regarded as the Identity of the one who wears them. If one rejects all that is objective from one’s Identity, one comes to the conclusion that the Self is the Knower free from all that is conceived & perceived.  In the same manner as one relinquishes Mis-identification with the Body & all that is objective, so should one sever the identification with the supposed Subject, which is the Ego.

[Ramana]

The concept about “reaching this Self-Realized state” is that there is a “goal” & a “path” to it.  But we are the “goal” or Peace always. To get rid of the notion that we are not Peace is all that is required.

Sri Ramana says, “The World is not seen, & no ‘I’-belief.”  Why is giving up the objective outlook mentioned ?  It is because, when we have an objectified view of things, inherent in that view, or perspective, there is some definition or set of definitions of the “I”.  There must be some definition of “I” so that the objective World can appear as it does to one. Those definitions should be abandoned. The best way to utterly relinquish the “I”-notion is to inquire to see if it actually exists. What you are attempting to negate then is not so much the word or the idea of “I”, but the assumed Individuality (jivata), the perspective of existing as a particularized thing.  Such is the base upon which the entire samsara (Illusion) rests.

The same Absolute Brahman appears according to one’s understanding as “Gos”, who is said to be the “Lord” who dispassionately distributes the results of karma.  Or else Brahman appears as the Witness, which is Consciousness in relation to all.  Or else Brahman appears as the attributeless, Eternal “I” of the nature of Indivisible, Non-Dual Existence–Consciousness which alone exists, without–a–2^nd.  The Self has neither rise nor set, is neither in darkness nor illumined, but is always the spiritual Light, with nothing material or mental in its nature at all.  The distinction between the Self & oneself is due only to super–imposition. This super–imposition is like imagining different “holes” to be different “spaces” due to emphasizing the structure with the openings rather than perceiving the Space itself.

There is a story about a lady who had a precious necklace round her neck.  Once in her excitement she forgot it & thought that the necklace was lost.  She became anxious & looked for it in her home but could not find it.  She asked her friends & neighbors if they knew anything about the necklace.  They did not.  At last a kind friend of hers told her to feel the necklace round her neck.  She found that it had all along been round her neck & she was happy.  When others asked her later if she had found the necklace which was lost, she said, “Yes, I have found it.”  She still felt that she had recovered a lost jewel.  Now did she lose it at all ?  It was all along round her neck.  But judge her feelings.  She was as happy as if she had recovered a lost jewel.  Similarly with us, we imagine that we will realize that Self some time, whereas we are never anything but the Self.

For the Absolute Self there is nothing based on an “I”.  For the Absolute Self there is no World. This realization should be even while apparently awake. Sri Ramana Maharshi has emphasized that our Self-Inquiry & our knowledge should not consist of suppositions, however apparently conclusive those ideas may be.  Our knowledge should consist of the true Knowledge of Reality.  The revelation Truth comes by giving up the objective outlook, abandoning the Ego-notion, & knowing one’s Self.

The Self’s Existence is independent of all & is different from all that is objective. The objectified “I” is the Ego. The super–imposed objective portion of the “I”–consciousness should be abandoned, for it is not actually the Self.  Negation of what is objective means also Negation of the Ego. What remains is that which is implied in the aphorism, “I am Brahman“, (aham brahmasmi). Only Brahman can be itself, 1–without–a–2^nd. That is the only true “I”.  Brahman is Unborn, Immortal, Imperishable, ageless, & all-comprehensive.

If it were it true that you realize it later it means that you are not Self-Realized now. Absence of Realization in the present moment may be repeated at any moment in the future, for time is infinite.  So such Realization is impermanent.  But that is not true.  It is wrong to consider Realization to be impermanent.  Self-Realization is the true Eternal state which cannot change.

You are already That.  Time & Space cannot affect the Self.  Time & Space are in you.  So also all that you see around you is in you.

If the dearness of sleep were just rest for the body, a horizontal position would suffice, and there would be less interest in sleep. A person who is lying in a bed & who cannot sleep, even though the body is in a horizontal position, after some time, may become agitated. He wants her sleep. He wants to get rid of this “I” & this World. Though waking & sleeping are a natural cycle, we should remain in identity with the Absolute Self which is “I”– less, which has no “I” arising.

True Knowledge is not experienced unless the prior ignorant conception is negated, just as the Snake-notion is destroyed to see the Rope. The Self, of the nature of Pure Consciousness, is self-existent & can never be negated. Egoism has its origin in Delusion & has for its object that which is only imagined.  Ego’s definitions are only thoughts. The discernment of “neti neti” – “not this, not this” negates the Ego’s very existence, along with its origin, its effects, & its imagined objects.

Not in relation to anything is the Unborn, the uncreated Consciousness. Instruction regarding the “Witness” is given only for those who are attempting to transcend the Mind.  A person has some sense that there is a state that is the highest good & that is free of the “I” & the World.  Falling asleep is dear & agreeable to us . If one misses sleep for some time, he longs for it. The subsidence of the “I” & the World make sleep dear. A state of Dreams full of images of himself & the World is not so appealing.  More Dreams like the present state are not so much wanted.

The removal of super–imposition is accomplished by Self-Inquiry. This is the intention of the negation of the Upanishads, “neti neti” – “not this, not this”.  Such indicates the negation as one’s attributes, identity, or definition, of what is not truly the Self, not the essential Existence, or pure Consciousness. The removal of super–imposition is the Revelation of the Truth. The Truth or Reality is not to be newly created.  Nor did the super–imposition diminish Reality in any way, just as the Snake did not chase the Rope away.  But to see the Rope, the Imagination of a Snake must cease.  Similarly, to know the Truth of the Self, Ignorance must cease.

In the Truth of No-Creation, in which there are no suppositions, no doctrines, & no ideas of any kind, there is no question of action. One Consciousness, when viewed from the perspective of the Universe appearing or existing, is called God, or the Supreme Lord. When viewed in terms of everything being only within the Mind, the same Consciousness is called the Witness. When known as it is, it is called pure, Non-Dual Consciousness.  In relation to the Universe, it is God. In relation to the Mind, it is the Witness, which includes being the Witness of the whole Universe.

Partless Existence, which is the Self, is beyond the changeful appearances in the Mind. So, how can the Senses be considered to be the Self ?  The Senses are part of the Body. The Body is perceived only by the Senses & has no reality apart from them. Each Illusion (Body & Senses) depends on the other. Such Illusion is like the “painting of a wall that is painted on the wall depicted when the wall itself has not yet been built.” The Self is bodiless & is not a part of the Body or associated with a location in relation to a Body, unlike the Senses. So, how can the Senses be considered to be the Self ?

The Mind, or the Ego, is objective, appearing by the Light of pure Consciousness alone. Pure Consciousness is the Absolute & is directly realized as existing as the Absolute when the “this” or objective portion, falsely attributed to the Absolute is negated. Ignorance, or Illusion, is merely a superimposition.  By “super–imposition” is meant the imagined placement of some attributes that do not belong to the Self upon the Self.  The basis of the super–imposition is real. It is Pure Existence, Consciousness pure.

If we know the Self, it is that in which there is “no World seen”, “no seer in it”, & neither an action nor an actor. If you ask, at the level of actions & taking for granted that a Body & a World are present, the explanation is given that it is the “reflected light” of the Self. When one turns toward that, he becomes swept up in that & leaves the worldly shadows & illusions behind. If you leave them behind entirely & plunge into that in which you are becoming absorbed, you find That in which there is no “I” & no “World” – “nothing is being done.”

Sri Sankara declares that just as “trees on the bank” seem to move when one is in a moving boat, so Transmigratory existence (re–incarnation) seems to be true to one who mis–identifies the Self with the Mind.  Thus, when the Mind moves, one thinks that the Self moves. When the Mind is still, one assumes the Self is still.  Because the modifications of the Mind are pervaded by the reflected light (chidabhasa) of Consciousness (chidabhasa), with the qualities of Reality & identity borrowed from Pure Existence, one assumes that the Self is identical with the Mind & identifies himself with those modifications.  Thus, one imagines, “my thoughts, my state, my experiences, etc.”

In the statements of the “saints” (devotional Sages, liberated by the practice of Non-Dual Bhakti & Surrender to the Absolute), the “I” is solely pure Brahman, the pure Self & not an Individual.  Ego–less & self–less in their activities when performing self–lessly, they make divine use of something that would otherwise be “worthless” (Body, Mind, etc.).  The inspiration can be said to be the “reflected light” of the Self (chidabhasa in terms of Atman; mahat in terms of Brahman).

 Spiritual practice is carried on with the Mind & addresses the Mind so that Consciousness alone remains. To see Illusion as Illusion, Ignorance as only Ignorance, is sufficient & most effective for clearing the way to experience Self-Knowledge.  Bondage is only Ignorance, or error in understanding. One does not at first attain Self-Knowledge due to his Ignorance about the true nature of the Self & the beginning adherence to false conceptions about the Self.  The Ignorance makes one feel bound, & the adherence to false notions maintains the Ignorance, yielding the apparent solidity & false continuity of Illusion. Both the Ignorance & the tendency to adhere to it are destroyed by Self-Inquiry to know the Truth of the Self.

A single Source of Happiness with unlimited powers has to be accepted, Sri Ramana said, That, in itself, “flattens” the Ego completely. Your Body, Speech, & Mind are merely instruments. They are not instruments for worldly desire driven by an Ego, but they are instruments in the hands of a Higher Power. Thus, you stand Dis–identified (instead of Mis-identified). If you abide entirely Dis–identified & plunge into the depths of your own Existence, you stand as That which is utterly immovable. The inspired activities go on without your involvement in them. We may say that the Lord does them. That is the reason why some of the saints have jokingly said that they stand even higher than the Lord, because the Lord is doing everything, & they are just peacefully being immovable.

When one recognizes that the Source of Happiness & Peace is within, that Suffering is not produced by external factors (such as other people, objects, & circumstances or their absence) but is created by one’s own Delusion, he commences a Path to Self-Knowledge. Proceeding to Self-Inquiry within oneself as to “what one is“, is the practice.  Listening (sravana) to the Teachings pertaining to Self-Knowledge, Reflection (manana) upon them, & deep Meditation (nididhyasana) to be absorbed in their essential meaning support this Self-Inquiry to know the Self.  Eliminating Ignorance, or Mis-identification, by such Self-Inquiry results in Self-Realization, which is Freedom from Delusion regarding the Self, or Reality. One should know that the Self is not made of matter & is, therefore, not the Body. The idea of being a Body occurs only in one’s Mind.  All delusions are created & sustained only in the Mind. They are not physically caused. The Body does not produce Ignorance & Egoism & such. So one should quest within the Mind itself, transcending the Mind while destroying its Illusions.

 Worldly thinking is a desperate search for Happiness, which however is only to be found within. Knowing that it is within, devoting our self to that which is within, our Thought, your Speech, & our Action become inspired, motivated by that very same Power within. It is not that the Self ever thinks, & certainly the Self never does anything.  But the best actions & thoughts preceding those actions are streaming forth from this inspiration of the Self.  So, the selfless activity is filled with a certain Happiness to which the worldly attempt can never compare.  Any worldly attempt at happiness that is driven by a desire to secure Happiness external to oneself can never compare.

 What prevents Self-Knowledge is one’s own adherence to Ignorance about the Self.  If the Ignorance ceases, Self-Knowledge shines, & one’s own Pure Existence is left in its True State.  Ignorance consists of Mis-identifications regarding oneself.  With Mis-identification, there seems to be 2, an Absolute Self & an individual self. The Non-Dual Teachings of Self-Knowledge are intended to remove that false differentiation by dissolution of Mis-identifications.  Mis-identification starts with the assumption of being an individual entity, a separate “I”, & consists of defining this “I” in a variety of delusive ways.  Thereupon follow the Mis-identification s with the Mind or thought, with the Life Energy or prana, with the Senses, with the Body, & then with various things in the World or the relation to them.  From all these Mis-identifications there arise all kinds of modes of Mind, emotions, & Bondage of all sorts that create suffering.

Realizing Non–Dual Liberation, Enlightenment by Self-Inquiry – pt102

Something deeper than the Mind knows this Knowledge. If there is thinking, that does not represent a disturbance. But the thinking must proceed from something else besides Mis-identification.  Likewise is it with the action. When you are caught up in the inspiration toward that which is self–less, or Ego–less, the motive for the thinking & the action is very different from the motive in your attempt to pursue your Happiness through that thinking & doing.

Reality is ever-existent.  If one perceives something that has appearance & disappearance, it is but a temporary thing.  If one examines the experience of that, one sees that it is not Pure Existence itself, but a guise for it, a mis–perception of it.  Or else It is an Illusion based upon Reality, but not Reality itself.  Pure Existence does not come or begin & then go or cease to exist.  To know Reality as it is, one must cease to regard as real what are only mis–perceptions or Illusions. The Self is the Reality, ever–existent, Unborn, Imperishable, Limitless, & Formless. The Self is identical with the Absolute.  If one does not experience it as such, it is due to lack of Self-Knowledge.

The Self, being Space-like but not in Space, has no location. The Self is neither a particular part of the Body nor confined inside it. If the Self were a spot or in a spot, the spot could be pointed out, & that very form would be the Self or would contain the Self.  But then the Self would neither be Existence nor Real, neither Infinite nor Eternal.  There would be no Liberation from Bondage. Then, the very declarations of the Wise would become false. This result & its presumed causes are absurd.  If the Self would be located throughout the Body or in a bodily spot, such location would be objective. The Self, though, is non–objective, & the non–objective cannot have an objective location or other objective attributes. If the Self were located in the Body, when that part of the Body underwent change or decay, so would Pure Existence itself.  If that part of the Body would be lost, the Self would be lost; if forgotten, then forgotten.

Better than quieting the Mind is the dissolution of the Mind.  It is fine to do things that tend to support our spiritual practice of turning our Mind inward. There is no point in our Mind immersing itself in worldly topics & making as much noise as possible. So doing those things that we find supportive of our spiritual practice means wisely governing, or directing the use of our Senses, our Speech, our thinking, & such.  But the essential key is the Knowledge of our Self, the dissolution of false Identity, & the dissolution of the idea of an existent Mind.

Absolute Reality is Infinite & Eternal & can be realized so that one remains in that Absolute Reality, as it, always.  To thus realize is to remain in lasting Peace, complete spiritual Freedom, & perfect Happiness, which is spiritual Bliss. The way to do this is to know oneself, for if one knows oneself as one really is, that itself is indeed the Absolute.  What one really is not what one might have mistakenly conceived oneself to be.  Regardless of whatever be the spiritual practices in which one may engage, eventually he or she is brought to this: the importance of knowing one’s True Nature as it is.  Self-Inquiry, which is characterized by asking within oneself, “Who am I ?”, is the keen Discernment of what one is & the relinquishment of ignorant mis–identifications.

Any desire [such as to teach] assumes some motive to acquire Happiness, & that cannot be for one who is full of Bliss.  Sri Ramana Maharshi taught Non-Duality out of compassion & Grace.  If we take up his Teaching in right earnestness & question: “Who is in need of such compassion ?” then we discover just how illimitably compassionate this Teaching is. This Teaching reveals the True Nature of the recipient.  If the recipient of Sri Ramana’s Teaching, considering them compassionate, meditates on who it is that is receiving compassion, then his “I”–ness vanishes, which is the greatest compassion.  The mediator’s state becomes “I”–less & without Duality.  Discussion of compassion at that point is not possible.

What truly exists stands Self-Revealed & the possibility of Bondage with its concomitant Suffering is no more.  There in no un–reality & no one to imagine it.  In Self-Realization, there is no change of states between active & in–active, or between thought & its absence.  Only 1 uncreated, unchanged Existence exists.  In Self-Realization there are no “degrees” of any kind. There is not a Liberation while alive contrasted with Liberation after disembodiment. There is no individual “I”, no perception of forms, & no disappearance of the perception of forms.  In this wakeful Bliss, there is nothing further to be accomplished.  The Self is Non-Dual, like Space, Formless, Infinite, Pure Existence, Void, Un–created, Time–less, & Ever-existent.  The Self ever is just as it is, & the Self alone exists.  This “ever–Existence” is the significance of Silence.

Why must Self-Realization take a long time ?  The idea of Time is only in your Mind. It is not in the Self. There is no “time” for the Self.  Time arises as an idea after the Ego arises.  But you are the Self beyond Time & Space.  You exist even in the absence of Time & Space.

The Mind can tell you everything about “everything” because everything is entirely in the Mind. It cannot tell you anything whatsoever about the Self.  If the Mind attempts to look at the Self, the Mind loses its form & is swallowed up in it. You alone can know your Self; an “other” cannot do so. The Mind is such an “other”.  The Mind is only an instrument, inert, & not capable of seeking.  Self-Knowledge cannot be “taught” by an “other”.  Sri Ramana Maharshi was immovable in the absolutely solid Knowledge that there is only one Self, without an “other”.

True Knowledge is not a thought – it is transcendent Knowledge.  In this Knowledge, the Self is itself the conviction & certitude in itself.  The Self itself is the depth & power of meditation upon the Knowledge. The Self itself is the real Teaching & the final proof of itself. The Self itself is That which is to be Known, the Knower himself, & the Knowledge itself.  The Self, itself, is the revelation in the ineffable Silence of Dakshinamurti & Sri Ramana Maharshi.  The Self has no states or degrees.  The Self is not bound, not striving for Liberation, & not liberated.  The Self is never bound, & there is no separate state of Liberation. There is in the Self no coming into existence of Illusion & no ending of Illusion. In Self-Realization no new thing has been attained, nothing has been made purer, nothing has been produced, nothing has been acquired, nor has anyone been transformed.

The Self is always realized. It is not necessary to seek to realize what is already & always realized. For you cannot deny your own existence. That Existence is Consciousness, the Self.  Unless you exist you cannot ask questions.  So you must admit your own existence.  That Existence is the Self.  It is already “realized”.  Therefore the effort to realize results only in your “realizing” your present mistake – that you have not realized your Self.  There is no new Realization. The Self becomes revealed.

The World–less, “I”–less Reality is your True Nature, & that alone is completely satisfying. “True” & “false” are concepts about Existence.  “Conscious” & “inert” are concepts about Consciousness. “Suffering” & “Happiness”” are concepts about Bliss. Neither of the concepts of these Dualities can compare with the Existence-Consciousness-Bliss realized as the No-Creation (“the World is not seen”) & the Unborn (“no ‘I’ “) nature of the Absolute.  No-Creation is the Realization of Knowledge, in which Reality comprehends Itself, & this is not a sensory experience. Reality is the Self of all. There is no existent “other” one to find it otherwise.

Always, there is 1 Reality, the Non-Dual Self.  All Illusion arises without a real cause & vanishes in the Knowledge of the Self.  Self-Knowledge, or Self-Realization, is the natural state (sahaja), the only Real State there is.  Pure Existence is forever un-changing.  The Self is the Source of all.  All depend on & appear in the Self.  The Self is the Beginning. The Self is that which pervades all.  The Self is the actual Existence of all.  The Self is the “middle”.  The Self is That into which all dissolves.  The Self is the End. The Self, being universal, is all in all at all times.

The Self is solid Existence, invariable, unmodified, indestructible, & ever Still.  The Self is ever-shining Consciousness, the one all-pervading Light “without a shadow”.  The Self is Bliss, the long-sought Happiness, the invariable perfect Fullness (purnam), & the Bliss of the Sages.  Existence-Consciousness-Bliss is the Self of the Sages, the Self of the spiritual aspirants, the Self of the Guru, the Self of the disciple, & the Self of All. Knowledge is Pure Existence.  Pure Existence is Knowledge.  There is no Duality in this. That is, in this there is no Knower & Known, & no being one thing & knowing another. There is no Ego in this. This is Ego–less Knowledge.

 Can the feeling in a place be Bliss ?  When you leave that place you say you are unhappy. Therefore this Peace is not permanent, it is mixed with unhappiness which is felt in another place. Therefore you cannot find Bliss in places & in periods of time.  Bliss must be permanent in order that it may be useful.  It is

your own Existence which is permanent.  Be the Self & that is Bliss.  You are always that.

Freedom from fear, & increasing Bliss act as a continuous drawing to realize it conclusively, so that there is no interruption in it. To be free continuously, & to thus be happy, or blissful, continuously without a break, is the motivation that, when we did not know better, manifested as fear. The Wise know how to make good use of the experience without placing emphasis on only the objective portion of the experience, so that we do not think of the experience as “solid” or as a thing in itself.

But the Self alone is Infinite, & Causality is not real. One cannot actually recall when this ego, the root of Maya, began, was created, or was born, though there is the knowledge of perpetual existence, which is of the Self alone, for never was there a time when you were not, and never will there be a time when you will cease to be. Thus, the Self is ever the Unborn—neither coming from another state or thing nor giving birth to any—and the ego is unborn as it never comes to be. This may also be regarded as the final significance of the Maharshi’s inquiry as to “Whence am I?” graciously given to show the method of tracing inwardly from where the identity of “I” derives, as well as “Who am I ?”

How can there be the Ego’s Effect (Delusion), when the supposed Cause itself has never come to be ?  The Ego is an assumption.  Who assumes this assumption ?  No one.  Who knows the Knowledge of the Self ?  The Ego-“I” cannot know the Self since the Self alone is capable of knowing (anything).  The Ego-“I” is inert, & the Known is a mere notion, a vacuous imagining, & an assumption that is non–existent.  There is no Ego to be ignorant or to be bound, to attempt to know the Self, or to return to it or unite with it.  The Self is what you are, & it is innately Ego–less.  This Ego–less Knowledge of the Self is the Knowledge of the Non-Dual, indivisible nature of the Self, the only true “I”  in which there is never an individual “I”.

In comparing oneself to a Sage, the difference implied in the terms “he” & “I” are obstacles to Self-Knowledge,  jnana.

Sankara in Vivekachudamani says that after the dissolution of the physical “sheath” the liberated man becomes like “water poured into water & oil into oil.”

It is a State in which there is neither Bondage nor Liberation. Taking another Body means throwing a veil, however subtle, upon Reality, which is Bondage. Liberation is Absolute & irrevocable.

The unreal cannot know the Real. The Ego is un–real, & as long as we take up our position, as it were, in the Ego, our knowledge of things is un–real. If we want to know what is what, we must know who is who. The undifferentiated, doubtless state is that which has abandoned the objective outlook. The highest Bliss, the most profound Happiness.  Profound Happiness is remaining in that state in which one is just the Absolute, with no separate identity, no Ego-“I”-notion, no being drawn toward an “I”-notion, & no conception of an objective World.

That the Ego is said to rise from the Origin, or Substrate, of the Self is expedient teaching for those desirous of Liberation intended to guide them to the Origin, the one Substrate, in order to realize its Ego–less nature. Such instruction should not be interpreted as about the Ego really being born or the Self actually giving birth to it.  The Ego cannot be self-produced, for to imagine so would be to suppose its pre-existence, which is absurd.  And that would lead to the consequent question as to what caused that pre-existent Ego. This in turn would lead either to the Delusion regarding the Effects causing the Cause or a modification in the eternally, changeless Self.  Those possibilities have already been negated by Self-Inquiry, or relegated to an infinite regression.

What is Bliss but your own Existence ?  You are not apart from Existence which is the same as Bliss. You are now thinking that you are the Mind or the Body which are both changing & transient.  But you are unchanging & Eternal.

Ignorance must go.  Who says, “I am ignorant ?”  He must be the “witness” of Ignorance.  That is what you are.

If we want to know “what ?” is “what”, we must know “who ?” is “who”.  The undifferentiated, doubtless state is that which has abandoned the objective outlook. What we all want is that which causes the highest Bliss, that which is truly happy. The highest Bliss, profound Happiness is remaining in that state in which one is just the Absolute Self. This prompts the aspirant to seek Liberation in the World–less, Ego–less state. For those who have realized the highest Truth though, that Truth is everywhere, of the nature of Bliss-Consciousness, & there is not a particle of this Universe that is without this Bliss-Consciousness.

 Where is the Ego ?  It is not in the World, which is unreal.  The Ego is not in the Body, which is unreal & it is not the Self.  The Ego is not in the Senses, which are unreal & it is not the Self.  The Ego is not in thought, which is unreal & not the Self.  The Ego is not in the flawless, unmodified, perfect Self.  The Ego is never actually experienced by itself & is not actually experienced in any of these.  The Ego dwells nowhere.  If the Ego is not a thing in itself, does not reside anywhere, & is not inherent in anything, the remaining possibility is that its supposed existence is an effect produced by something else, but only the Self exists & the Self exists produces nothing.

 It is the Mind that veils our Happiness. How do we know that we exist ?  If you say because of the World around us, then how do you know that you existed in Deep Dreamless Sleep ?

 The Mind cannot kill itself.  So your business is to find the Real Nature of the Mind.  Then you will know that there is no Mind. When the Self is sought, the mind is nowhere.  Remaining in the Self, one need not worry about the Mind.

 The Mind cannot kill itself.  So your business is to find the Real Nature of the Mind.  Then you will know that there is no Mind. When the Self is sought, the mind is nowhere.  Remaining in the Self, one need not worry about the Mind.

It is a waste of time to dispute in the Mind, because our focus should be the Knowledge of the Self & not an attempt to determine what “this” is without first knowing “I”. If we attempt to determine what “this” is (any “this”), without first knowing the “I”, the best that we can hope for some doctrinal supposition. Reality alone can know the Reality. Any supposed “stepping stone” would not be an outward or mental dispute, it would be some “stepping stone” to actually inquiring into the “I” & knowing the Self as it is.  For in that way alone, does one know Reality.  This is so because the un–real cannot know the Real. The Ego is un–real & as long as we take up our position in the Ego as it were, our knowledge un–real knowledge of things un–real.

The Ego is not a temporary quality of the Self.  The Truth cannot be like an “unripe fruit becoming a ripe fruit.”  Then there would be 2 stages, or States, for the Self, one with an Ego & one without.  The Existence of the Self is Absolute & un-changing. If the Ego were ever part of Pure Existence, or sharing in it in any way whatsoever, Pure Existence would be changeful & transitory & would cease to exist.  Existence is always Ego–less & has no Ego quality whatsoever.

The Body is not the truth, for the Body is only imagined in the Mind. For the Illusion of the World, one must also regard the sensations not as sensations or modes of Mind, but as an actually objective entity endowed with the Duality of inner & outer, & with the apparent object portion of the sensation considered as separate from the knowing aspect (as if there were an independently existing “external” World).  Since the Body is not oneself, & the Self is not in a Body, the World is not distributed out “around” oneself.  “Around” is imagined within  the Mind & is not distributed all “around”.

Realization is already there. The state free from thoughts is the only real state. There is no such action as “realization”.  Is there anyone who is not realizing the Self ?  Does anyone deny his own existence ?  Speaking of realization, it implies 2 selves –  the one to realize, the other to be realized.  What is not already realized is sought to be realized. Once we admit our existence, how is it that we do not know our Self ?

Some Wise Sages say that this entire World is false, so that we realize the Truth of Brahman. Without actually contradicting themselves, those same Sages at other times say that this entire Universe is “true”, for the Truth of Brahman alone, constitutes all of “this”.  Likewise, those same Wise Sages say that all this is inert, so that we realize that which “knows”, which is pure Consciousness & which is not of this World.  On the other hand, the Wise Sages also say that this entire Universe is nothing but the Infinite Consciousness, & there is nothing inert anywhere. Similarly, it has been pointed out that this World is a place of suffering. This prompts the aspirant to seek Liberation in the World–less, Ego–less state. For those who have realized the Truth though, that Truth is everywhere, of the nature of Bliss-Consciousness, & there is not a particle of this Universe that is without this Bliss-Consciousness.

 The Ego-“I” is not a quality or attribute of the Self, since it is not invariably related to the Self.   The Ego-“I” does not continue in Liberation or in Deep Dreamless Sleep.  Since the Ego-“I” does not then continue, it must belong to something else & not to the Self. To what does the Ego-“I” belong ?  In Self-Inquiry one will find that the Ego-“I” belongs to nothing.  The Ego-“I” It cannot belong to what depends on it (concepts, vasanas, etc.).  The attributeless Self is homogenous & ever changeless & so will never have an Ego at any time.  If the Ego were an attribute of the Self, the Ego would be Eternal.  In that case, all Liberation, all Scriptures, all spiritual life, all spiritual practice, all sayings of Sages, & such would be futile & false. That would be absurd.  It is better to give up the notion of the Ego than to hold to it as being real.

 It is the thought which builds up layers of Illusion (sheaths) in so many ways. The shadow on the water is seen to be shaking. Can anyone stop the shaking of the shadow ?  If it would cease to shake you would not notice the water but only the Light.  Similarly take no notice of the Ego (shadow) & its activities, but see only the Light behind.  The Ego is the thought “I”.  The true “I” is the Self.

All the assertions of the Mind cannot compare to Liberation. If we remain without an “I” or a “this”, we can be content. The “I”-less state has no differences.  In the “I”-lessness, in the difference–less, there is no contention. Differences arise after the “I”, & they are differences  among things considered as “this”.  In the “I”-less state, there is no “this” at all.  Whether we consider something as True or as False, as inert or as Consciousness, as Happiness or as Suffering, & whether these ideas pertain to something in the World or to the World as such, these thoughts are still a consideration about “this”, built upon the supposition of “I”.

The Absolute is without attributes.  The Absolute is never sensed since one never sees, hears, touches, or has any other sensory impression by the Ego. The Ego is not the word, “I” nor the particular thought of “I”.  Realized sages, who are fully identified with the true Self alone, may say “I” but they neither give rise to nor retain any Ego.  The Ego has no form of its own & is never seen by itself as it is.  Though the Ego is assumed  to be a division in Pure Existence, how can Pure Existence be Dual or be divided in Itself ?

 The result of Self-Inquiry is remaining as pure Existence-Consciousness, which transcends the animate & the in–animate, & which never dies. This is remaining in the invariable state of the Self.  As long as one is identified with the Prana, there will be the differentiation of living & dead. Then the one Existence which ever is will appear “veiled”.  When this Mis-identification is destroyed through Knowledge, the Duality vanishes. Prana undergoes fluctuations from Birth to Death, in health & sickness.  Prana  also varies according to lifestyle & activities.  Pure Existence does not fluctuate. So, how could Prana be equated with the Self  ?  The animating Prana is objective.  Prana is something experienced & not the Consciousness that knows it.

One classic Vedic analogy points to non–objective Consciousness, the singular Reality that we are.

Eyes in a Desert

This analogy that points to non–objective Consciousness refers to “vision” of a man in a desert place with no standing pool of water or shiny metal that might accidentally serve as a mirror.  With no such mirror to reflect an image of the man’s eyes, he has no direct, objective experience of those eyes.

And yet, by virtue of his vision of the surrounding terrain, & of part of his own body, this man does know himself to be a “Seer“.  So too we know non–objective Consciousness to be the Seer, even though we have no direct, objective experience of that non–objective Consciousness which is the Self, oneself.

That sees all, but cannot be seen because it alone does all the seeing.

Another classic Vedic analogy refers to a earthen vessel/pot with many holes.  A candle in the bottom casts the impression of many “lights” all deriving from the one candle, many “seers” seemingly shining, but only one candle, One Consciousness.  From any one & all, the One Consciousness that we are cannot only be inferred, but never seen.  Each can ask & then say: Who am I ?  I Am That.

In our Meditation, we do not want to quarrel within our own Mind. Sri Ramana says that all such disputes are to no purpose. That is not what is to be done in Meditation. We do not want to have a quarrel within ourselves.  How should we meditate ?  How should we proceed spiritually ?  Remain in the state in which the World is not seen. Inquire & remain in the state in which there is no “I”-belief & in which there is neither a Seen nor the Seer. The Absolute alone remains, without an “I” or a “this”, without an Ego-“I”-notion & a World. There is no differentiation.  In the difference–less state of your Real Existence, there is no doubt. Reality comprehends itself with a doubt–less Knowledge.

 The Ego-“I”-notion is the separate Experiencer, the individual Knower, the embodied Entity, the Doer of action, & the notion of an “other”.  The Ego-“I”-notion itself is the concept of a separate Universe in which that “I” supposedly exists.  Upon the Ego is based the illusory differentiation of the World, the Individual, & the Supreme (jagat-jiva-para).  The 3 are not 3, but only That 1. the Non-Dual Self.  Only with the Ego does the 1 appear to be 3.  The 1 then appears as it is conceived.  The World & thought are un–real, & so is the ego. One sees the ego’s guises and its appearances. Where is its existence? One sees its effects, but where is the cause? If the ego is real in any manner, it should be actually experienced. If the ego is an entity, it should exist somewhere. If the ego itself is an effect, it should have a cause. One should inquire to determine if the ego exists at all.

 If there is a “goal” to be reached it cannot be permanent. The “goal” must already be there.  We seek to reach the “goal” with the Ego, but the “goal” exists before the Ego.  What is in the “goal” is even prior to our birth, that is, to the birth of the Ego.  Because we exist the Ego appears to exist too.  If we look on the Self as the Ego then we become the Ego, if as the Mind we become the Mind, if as the Body we become the Body.

Remaining without differentiation, remaining without doubt is where our Bliss lies & where our Peace is because of its nature of Bliss, that is of Happiness & Love – absorption in the Absolute, remaining as the Absolute. If there are no differences, if there is no World & no “I”, that is seeing no world & the clear ascertainment that there is no “I” –  this is the right state – remaining in That, as That itself.

 This Self, which is formless Existence-Consciousness, cannot be sensed & does not have senses. It is not a sensing entity, conceived as a nexus of all the sensations, but ever un–mixed Consciousness. The Self is all-seeing but eye– less. In Truth, the Senses do not exist. They are only a figment of the Mind, which is in the Infinite Consciousness. Upon the substrate of the Self, which is Existence-Consciousness, there appear the Senses which are only the thought of them. The Sense objects do not separately exist, but appear only to & in the Senses. The Senses vanish, leaving the substrate (Self) unaffected & all alone. The substrate is Reality, which is un-changing. There is no actual “creation” of the Senses in that Consciousness. By this Knowledge, one remains identified as the Self & not mis–identified with the Senses, which are unreal.

 What & where is the Ego ?  One should inquire into this deeply to realize the natural non–Ego state, which is Blissful & Free from all Bondage & Suffering. The Ego is merely a false notion –  a bare assumption—of Individuality, of a separate “I”, which is the supposition of differentiation from the Absolute. The Ego has no form of its own, &, so to appear in any way it creates an Illusion of Form & attaches itself to such.  It itself appears as the mis–identification with & attachment to the unreal forms of the Mind, the Senses, the Body, & the World. Thus, in the course of spiritual practice, when one destroys these mis–identifications & attachments, the Ego dissolves.

Ignorance never arose. It has no real existence. That which exists is only vidya [Knowledge].  If does not realize it, such is because of the samskaras.  Find out who does not realize & what he does not realize. Then it will be clear that there is no avidya (Ignorance).

Realizing Non–Dual Liberation, Enlightenment by Self-Inquiry – pt88

That which yields Liberation is that which brings about remaining without the Ego-“I”-notion  That which yields Liberation uproots the suppositions about the Individual, the World, & God.  Abandon the previous conceptions, the root conception being the Ego-“I”.  Otherwise, the basic causes of Ignorance or Delusion are still there.  Actual Knowledge of your Self is necessary for Self-Realization. In the state of Self-Realization, Sri Ramana Maharshi says, “the World is not seen.”  The World is “not seen” means that it is not experienced at all. So, there can no longer be any doubt regarding whether it is real or false, made of consciousness or inert, or is a place of suffering or a place of happiness. All such disputes, or thinking, depend upon the idea that the World exists. Sri Ramana says, “the world is not seen” is the seeing that “there is no World”.

 The Universe has no separate existence because for the Self is all in all at all times & is un–differentiated.  The Self is transcendent of the Form of all, but the Ego gives the deluded, wrong view of Duality. The Body is not one’s home, for the Self is unborn & bodiless. But the Ego gives the deluded view of the Self & the Body as knotted together. Bliss is of the Eternal Self.  But the Ego gives the deluded view that Happiness is not here, not immediate & ever present as Pure Existence itself, & must be elsewhere.  The Ego appears as the knot between “Form” & the Self  which is of the nature of pure Existence-Consciousness-Bliss.  The Formless Self, Brahman, alone is ever the solitary Reality. But the Ego gives the deluded view of existent Form, of something “other “existing, of a ” 2^nd “.  With Self-Inquiry to determine its nature, the Ego, with all that depends upon it, “vanishes” because it is un–real.

 Even after having heard this Truth, one does not remain content because samskaras [innate mental tendencies] have not been destroyed. Unless the samskaras cease to exist, there will always be doubt & confusion. All efforts are directed to destroying doubt & confusion. To do so their roots must be cut.

Their roots are the samskaras. These are rendered ineffective by practice as prescribed by the Guru.  The Guru leaves it to the seeker to do this much so that he might himself find out that there is no Ignorance.  Hearing the Truth [sravana] is the first stage.  If the understanding is not firm, one has to practice reflection [manana] & uninterrupted contemplation [nididhyasana] on it.  These 2 processes “scorch” the seeds of samskaras so that they are rendered ineffective. Some extraordinary people get unshakable jnana after hearing the Truth only once. These are the advanced seekers. Beginners take longer to gain it.

Realizing Non–Dual Liberation, Enlightenment by Self-Inquiry – pt87

In the state, where “the World is not seen”, in seeing that “there is no World”, all the concerns, doubts, & disagreements about what “the World” is cannot be, for the obvious reason that then there is no “World” to begin with. In that state, there is no belief in an Ego-“I” who would entertain any such ideas or who would experience such a World. The state of True Knowledge is characterized by an absence of “the World” & an absence of Ego-“I”. It is the “clear ascertainment of no Ego-“I” Sri Ramana says. It is that in which there is no “I”-belief, in which there is not even a going toward the “I” & in which there is no motion to create an Ego-“I”-notion.

 The Ego is the root cause of Delusion, Illusion, Bondage, & Suffering. The Ego is the root of the Mind, even the very idea of an existent Mind, & the root of all else. It is the first illusion to be imagined & the last to disappear. The Ego is the Cause, Substance, & Experiencer of all Illusion. Without the Ego, Illusion is impossible. The Ego has no actual form of its own.  The Ego may be conceived as the Experiencer, the Thinker, the Performer of action, the one who senses, the one who lives, the one who has attributes, & such.  In essence, the Ego is the concept of “I” in whatever guise it may appear.  All Duality & Ignorance is from the Ego, by the Ego, & in the Ego.

 People speak of memory & forgetfulness regarding the fullness of the Self.  Forgetfulness & memory are only thought-forms. They will alternate so long as there are thoughts. But Reality lies beyond thought. Memory or forgetfulness must be dependent on something.  That something must be foreign to the Self as well, otherwise there would not be forgetfulness. That upon which memory & oblivion depend is the idea of the Individual self.  When one looks for it, this individual “I” is not found because it is not real. Hence this “I”  is synonymous with Illusion or Ignorance (maya, avidya or ajnana).  To know that there never was Ignorance is the goal of all the spiritual teachings. Ignorance must be of one who is conscious. Consciousness is jnana. jnana is Eternal & Natural, ajnana is unnatural & un–real.

That in which there is neither “I” nor “this”, no notion of “this”, no definition of “this”, no notion of “this”, & no definition of “I”. Discarding of definitions is the True State of Knowledge. It is remaining without differentiation, & without doubt.  Indeed, the difference–less state is alone the doubtless state. Where there are differences, there are doubts.  Where there is no conception of difference, we no longer have any doubt regarding the Reality. We know it to be the Self.

 Self-Realization is the Ego–less state.  Freedom from the Ego is the essence of Liberation.  It is remaining in the Self as the Self.  The falsely assumed individualized “I” is completely removed by Self-Knowledge, & the one true “I”,  the I of the “I”, alone remains.  This Self is referred to by the Ramana Maharshi, Ribhu, & other sages as, “I-I”. That true “I-I” is the “I” in the statement, “I am the Absolute” (aham brahamasmi).  In the Realization of the significance of that Mahavakya (great aphorism) of the Upanishad, “I am the Absolute” Sri Sankara explains: the entire notion of “I” is removed.  The notion of “I” is removed just like the idea, “a man is here” that has been conceived when Mis-perceiving a Post in the darkness. That Mis-perception is completely removed upon light being brought to see more clearly. Brahman alone exists & Brahman alone knows Brahman.  When the “I” (ahamkara) is removed, all of “mine” (mamakara) is also removed since the latter is completely dependent upon the delusion of “I”.

 The nature of Bondage is merely the rising, ruinous thought, “I am different from Reality.”  Since one surely cannot remain separate from Reality, reject that thought whenever it rises.

Realizing Non–Dual Liberation, Enlightenment by Self-Inquiry – pt85

Remaining without the Ego-“I”-notion is not only best; it is really the only way. Anything else is merely dreaming.  Furthermore, a truly spiritual approach questions & discerns the nature of the approach, itself.  If we keep the same suppositions & merely accrue information within that context, what have we really done in the name of spirituality ? Unless you question & discern the very nature of the “I,” & thereby unravel the conceptions of the Individual, the World, & Supreme, no lasting benefit occurs. The true expansion from the Illusion of Duality to the Reality of Non-Duality does not occur, unless there is some means by which one remains devoid of the Ego-“I”-notion. Self-Inquiry is that means. Otherwise, one will just have new names for the same suppositions that constituted the Illusion, but the purpose of the instruction by Wise Sages, from time immemorial, is not to reinforce the same Delusion that is already there. To the contrary, the purpose of the instruction is to show something that was not known before & to undo what was thought to be known before.

 The Self is not in the Mind, though it alone pervades it to such an extent that the distinctions of Pervader & Pervaded do not exist.  Though thought exists only as the Self, the Self has never become a thought & has never given rise to thought.  Thought is entirely un–real & does not exist at all.  The Self alone exists & it is 1–without–a–2^nd. The Mind exists nowhere but in the Self, yet there is truly no Mind in the Self.  The True Nature of the Mind is only the Self.  There is truly no Mind at all, & the Self alone exists. In the Knowledge of the Non-Dual, invariable Consciousness there is no such thing as the Mind & yet Consciousness is the only true nature of the Mind.

 Just as water in a pot reflects the enormous Sun within the narrow limits of the pot, even so the vasanas or latent tendencies of the Mind of the Individual, acting as the reflecting medium, catch the all-pervading, infinite Light of Consciousness. One imagines that he knows about the World, or the Universe, both in gross (physical) forms & in subtle (astral–“prana”–energy) forms, his so-called “outer experience” of that World & his mental impressions of it.  He thinks that he knows about himself, what he is like, & what he is not like. With the ideas of “I am this”, “I am that”, “I am not like this”, “I am not like that”, “I have these qualities”, “I have this history & this memory”, & such, the Individual is thus defined. Then, he enters into the field of spirituality. He hears about the Supreme Self, or about the Supreme Lord, & whatever ideas are fashioned from the perspective of that Individual he takes to be the reality. It is better if all that effort is oriented toward what is Non-Dual & deeply spiritual, in contrast to that which is merely Worldly or Dual, but the best of al Sri Ramana proclaims, is remaining without (“abidance void”, sunya-nistha) the Ego-“I”-notion.

The un–real is not an attribute of the Reality, the Self. The unreal is not experienced by the Reality, which is of the nature of Being-Consciousness-Bliss. What is not real and what is not experienced in or of the real does not exist. Thus, there are neither thoughts nor states. One vast Consciousness is. The mind does not bind the Self, for it does not define or limit the Self, does not divide the Self, and does not alter the Self. The Self is not bound, for the mind has no independent existence. The Self is not bound, for there is nothing other than the Self and, therefore, no mind at all. The mind is nowhere but in the Self, yet, in the Self, there is no mind.

If the Knower, or the knowing Essence, is assumed to be an individual knower, everything that he knows is just a pack of suppositions & deluded guess work.  Whatever we think we know about the World or any aspect of it & whatever we think we know about the Supreme Self are just suppositions.  If we say to ourselves that we know such & such about the Supreme Self, the belief or conviction is good as far as it goes.  But for real Knowledge we must remain free of the Ego-“I”-notion.  Then the Absolute (Brahman), or the Supreme Self (Atman), knows Itself.

 Thought, both as particular thoughts and as thinking itself, is not an attribute of Consciousness. A true attribute would need to be with that to which it is attributed always. Consciousness is not, by nature, a thought; nor does it have thought always. Therefore, thought is not the attribute of the attributeless Consciousness. Thought cannot exist without Consciousness. Consciousness exists without thought. The self-existent is alone real, and the dependent does not truly exist. Thus, in reality, thought is unreal and the Self alone is real.

If we make definitions to help us reach spiritual understanding, we soon have definitions about formulating definitions, & even the negation of definitions.  Self-Inquiry gets rid of suppositions & self-created doctrines fall by the wayside.  Whether we go through all the thinking ir directly inquire, we must in the end actually inquire in our True Nature & arrive at the dissolution of the Ego-“I”-notion.  We must come to know the Self.  Again, knowing the Self  is not a matter of making definitions, conceiving of ideas, or giving names to things.  In Knowledge of the Self, the Individuality that is falsely assumed must dissolve.  There, all doubts are dissolved & all questions are answered.

 Each thought depends completely on Consciousness & is never known or experienced apart from Consciousness.  Each thought appears & disappears in Consciousness alone. So thought is just Consciousness viewed as such. Thought is said to be a mental mode (vritti), a modification, or a form of Consciousness. Consciousness, itself, is forever formless, unmodified, and has no modes, for it is changeless and eternal. How can there be a form of the formless or a modification of the changeless? Or, how can there be a mode for the birthless and the eternal? Thought has no real existence. It is like a snake imagined in a rope or the waters of a mirage.

Undisputed Knowledge of the Reality is necessary & not a supposition. There is nothing to “figure out” regarding Reality. Real Knowledge is not the end result of a long thinking process. There is no trick needed for Self-Realization.  See the distinction between suppositions & real Knowledge. It is the difference between doctrine & the true teaching. The true teaching is found in abidance in the “I”-less state and not in defining illusions. Knowing more about illusions is not wisdom or real Knowledge. Knowing the Self is real Knowledge. Knowledge of the Self is directly realized by the elimination of the Ego-“I” that would suppose, or could conjure up, any idea or any kind of Illusion.

In final Truth, there are no States of Mind & no Mind, & the Self is neither a Cause nor an Experiencer.  Each thought may be regarded as affecting only other thoughts.  Such is because the Self is ever the unaffected silent Witness of all thoughts.  Each thought has nothing that actually connects it to another thought.  All the thoughts are supported by Consciousness alone. Thought has no knowing power.  A thought cannot know itself, nor can it know another thought.  No thought is self-existent.

In a parable, a man goes to sleep in this hall.  He dreams he has gone on a world tour, is roaming over hill & dale, forest & country, desert & sea, across various continents & after many years of weary & strenuous travel, returns to this place & enters the hall.  Just at that moment he wakes up & finds he has not moved an inch but was sleeping where he lay down.  He has not returned after great effort to this hall, but is & always has been in the hall all the while.  It is exactly like that.  If it is asked, “Why being free do we imagine that we are bound ?” I answer, “Why being in the hall did you imagine you were on a world adventure, crossing hill & dale, desert & sea ?  It is all Mind or Maya [illusion].

Spiritual progress is determined by the depth of realizing “I”– less Self-Knowledge. The dissolution of the “I” that conceives of this World; that conceives of “myself” as an Individual, the Jiva; & of the Supreme Self – that dissolution of the “I” is the liberating Wisdom. Yet Knowledge in its depth does not have a cause – it is inherent in the Self. The Self “sees” from behind you. Take up that his perspective.  When they are in the spirit of Self-Inquiry, the raising of questions serves to dissolve the “I” & whatever suppositions are built upon that “I”.  The reason for the doubt, which the questioning seeks to resolve or destroy, is always this assumption of “I”, & all the suppositions come out from there. Whether they be elaborate, well-formulated doctrines or just wild, individualized suppositions, all of them come forth from this one “I”-notion.

 There are no aspects or phases of homogeneous Consciousness, which is partless.  Since It is Existence-Consciousness, the Self passes unaffected through the 3 States, unmoved by the presence or absence of thoughts in any of their forms.  Yet how can the Self, being Infinite, pass through anything else (such as a State) ?  The States revolve in the Self, not the Self in them. Yet how can there be anything but the Self in that undifferentiated Reality ?  The Self is Infinite, detached, unaffected, Reality devoid of mis–perception & non–perception, with no Cause & having no Effect.

 Even the thought, “I do not realize” is a hindrance.  In fact, the Self alone is.  Our real nature is Liberation.  But we are imagining we are bound & are making various, strenuous attempts to become free, while we are all the while free.  This will be understood only when we reach that stage.  We will be surprised that we were frantically trying to attain something which we have always been & are.

Sri Ramana Maharshi’s Teaching is based on Knowledge of Reality, by the Reality, itself. So, it would not be right to call his Teaching a supposition, a doctrine, or anything similar. It is entirely of the True Nature of Transcendent Wisdom.  This Teaching  does not involve the Mind.  It is not a setting forth of ideas, even well-arranged ideas. It is the revelation of True Knowledge of the Real Self, by the Real Self, for Itself. So, it does not include any of the Duality, or any of the Triads (Knower, Knowing, Known, etc.), that one wants to dissolve. Duality is thinking that there is a Triadic state & a non–Triadic State.  Sri Ramana’s instruction deals directly with Reality.

The 3 States are seen as 3 only so long as Consciousness is not known as it is.  Dream is to Deep Dreamless Sleep, emerging but within it, “forming” yet not really so, for it is within the Formless.   So also is the Waking State to Turiya (the 4^th), which is actually pure Consciousness.  Turiya, or the Transcendent State, is just pure Consciousness, which, being beyond the 3 States, is beyond the notion of a “4^th State”.  So it is also called Turiyatita, “beyond the 4^th“.  Consciousness remains as the one Existence, which is in, & which itself is, its Natural Innate State ever.  The 2 States of Waking & Dream are not consistently present.  Those States & Deep Dreamless Sleep are passing appearances.

The apparent “World” is like a cinema-show.  There is the Light on the screen & the shadows flitting across it impress the audience as the enactment of some piece.  If in the same play an audience also is shown on the screen as part of the performance, the Seer & the Seen will then both be on the screen.  Apply it to yourself.  You are the screen, the Self has created the Ego, the Ego has its thoughts which are displayed as the World.  In reality, all these are nothing but the Self.  If you see the Self, the same will be found to be all, everywhere & always. Nothing but the Self exists.

Realizing Non–Dual Liberation, Enlightenment by Self-Inquiry – pt78

However you would define the World, as good or bad, or anything in between, however you would define the Individual, as being meritorious or not, or anything in between, & however you would define the Supreme Self, in whatever glorious terms, none of that can compare with remaining free of the Ego-“I” in which the Reality is known directly by oneself.  If identified with the Mind, it would not make a difference what kind of supposition you conceived or what doctrine was conceived on that basis, it still would be within the context of the Ego-“I”-assumption, which is the root of all Delusion.

The Self, Existence-Consciousness, is free of both Cause & Effect. In Self-Knowledge, neither the Veiling of the Reality nor the Illusion of Multiplicity, neither the non– perception nor the mis–perception of real Existence.  The Self is Itself & knows itself as it is. From Existence-Consciousness comes Deep Dreamless Sleep.  From Deep Dreamless Sleep comes Dream, from Dream comes Waking.  Each succeeding State occurs within the preceding one.  All occurs within Existence-Consciousness, & that is what one truly is.  So it is better to say that the States of Mind, & the Worlds that appear in them, are in one’s Self than that one is in those States. Being beyond the states, the Self is called “the 4^th,” yet it is only 1 & in its own State ever.

Do all the many “things” exist at all apart from the Self ?  Find it out. You think that you see them. The thought is projected out from the Self.  Find out from where it rises. Thoughts will cease to rise & the Self alone will remain.

In the State of Deep Dreamless Sleep, there is an absence of Waking & Dream thoughts & their content.  There is therefore no World, no Body, no Senses, no Ideas, no Memories, and no “Person” existing in the Deep Dreamless Sleep State.  Yet Existence-Consciousness still remains, & that Existence-Consciousness is the Self.  Even in the absence of thoughts in Deep Dreamless Sleep, the Self is unaffected by the absence of all else as it is when all else appears in the other 2 States.  Deep Dreamless Sleep is characterized by the presence of the Cause, but the absence of the Effect. Who is to know the Self ?  Can the insentient Body know the Self ?  All the time you speak & think of your “I”, yet when questioned you deny knowledge of it.  You are the Self, yet you ask how to know the Self.

Your Self-Realization is the best help you can possibly offer “others”.  But there are no others to be helped. For a realized being sees only the Self, just like a goldsmith estimating the gold in various items of jewelry sees only gold.  When you identify yourself with the Body then only the forms & shapes are there.  But when you transcend your Body the others disappear along with your body-consciousness.

However we would name & explain, from Dual to Non-Dual, the Individual, the World, & the Supreme, even if we give them exceedingly eloquent names with eloquent explanations, none of that would compare to remaining free of the Ego–“I”–notion. This is the best of all because whatever is built on the basis of an Ego–“I”–notion is only as real, or as unreal, as the Ego–“I”–notion itself.  Do we attempt to figure out what something is, or do we attempt to know ourselves ?  A supposition is a guess at what is. Truth transcends suppositions & is not realized through suppositions.  It is realized by direct Self-Inquiry that yields true Knowledge,

Everything experienced in a State ( Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep) changes within the state itself or changes with the changing of the State to another State. Only Existence-Consciousness remains the same, unaffected by the changes of such experiences & the change of State.  So what is present in the Waking State may be absent in the Dream State. What is present in a Dream is absent in Waking. W hat appears within a State is that “State of Mind” itself.  The Dreaming State of Mind itself appears as all that is experienced in the Dream.  So too is it with the Waking State experiences.  The State of Mind itself composes all that appears within it.

Knowing the Self is being the Self, & “being” means Existence, one’s own Existence.  No one denies one’s Existence any more than one denies one’s eyes, although one cannot see them.  The trouble lies with your desire to objectify the Self, in the same way as you objectify your eyes when you place a mirror before them. You have been so accustomed to objectivity that  have lost the knowledge of yourself, simply because the Self cannot be objectified.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 75

If there is the Ego–notion “I”, then Individuality is built up, & the qualities of the Individual are conceived.  Just as the qualities of the Individual are conceived, so are the qualities of the World conceived, & when considering the Supreme (God) or the Supreme Self, all that is viewed in accordance with the perspective of that Individual.  Examine your own approach when you attempt to know what the World is, what the Supreme Self is, & what the Individual is. Is it as if you were approaching a topic of study, with naming, analyzing, & explaining ?  Certainly, wise Sages, have given names to these 3 things – the Individual, the World, & the Supreme Self.  But what has been the purpose in their naming and explaining ? Those 3 are not objective, concrete realities. They have been named or explained only for the purpose of negation, of sweeping them aside, so that the real singular Existence is revealed.  That Triad appears so long as the Ego–“I”–notion exists. As long as the “I”–notion exists, we treat the Supreme Self as if it were some object. We treat the World as if it were something objective.  This includes the characteristics, traits, qualities, & the tendencies accruing to the Individual, which are then treated as if they were objectively existing things in that World.

Thoughts move in modes & patterns.  Innumerable thoughts & modes are contained in States of Mind (like Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep). In the first 2, thought  projects itself into itself (the character seems to be thinking & knowing), & the content of thought changes according to those States. The Waking State is equivalent to the Dream. In both, the same multiplicity manifests.  In both, Subject & Object appear.  The same kinds of mental functions appear in both States.  In both, the same tendency to identify as a particular character with a particular Body exists.  Cause & Effect are present in both States. Both are characterized by a non–perception of Reality & a mis–perception of Reality, which are equivalent to not seeing a Rope & imagining it to be a Snake. These 2 States: Waking & Dreaming, are conflicting (which Body are we supposed to be ?) & mutually contradictory.

See if the un–real ever did “spring” from the Real.  There is no such thing as the “un–real”, from another standpoint. The Self alone exists. When you try to trace the Ego, which is the basis of the perception of the World & everything else, you find the Ego does not exist at all & neither does all this “Creation” that you see.

The Teaching of Non-Duality, Advaita Vedanta is the final, highest Knowledge, not a set of suppositions, for it does not begin by naming or explaining the World, the Individual, the Supreme. Advaita Vedanta begins with Existence.  It begins where we (Ego–“I” Individuals) end.  Advaita Vedanta does not attempt to name or explain things that are supposed to exist, but rather aims at Self-Inquiry into the very Nature of Existence.  What is it that is called the Individual ?  However the Individual is named or explained, so in accordance with that is the World & the Supreme Self explained.

Since there are truly no “internal” & “external” aspects in a Dream, though in the Dream those appear, so it is with thought now in the Waking State in which this writing is probably appearing.  Even the largest thought occupies no Space, & the longest one endures for no time.  Therefore all that is conceived is Maya (Illusion).  One thinks, envisions, dreams, & such with no respect to physical things, such as when thinking of a large mountain or dreaming of being in another place.  We do not travel to those places & those things are not altered in any way.  So likewise, all is thought inclusive of the large & small, now & then, this & that, you & I, he & she, here & there; past, present, & future.  Again, no effect or from all things, all actions, all occurrences, Life & Death, & all that is considered the Universe-Individual-God (jagad-jiva-para). T he Self transcends all this, for it is free from though t.

Ignorance is forgetfulness of the Self.  Can there be darkness before the Sun ?  Similarly, can there be Ignorance before the self–evident & self-luminous Self ?  If you know the Self there will be no “darkness”, no Ignorance, & no misery.  It is the Mind which feels the trouble & misery.  “Darkness” never comes nor goes.  See the Sun & there is no darkness.  Similarly, see the Self & Ignorance will be found not to exist.

The only way of knowing what it is that is really your Self, what really is the Supreme Self, & what is really the nature of the Universe is remaining devoid of the assumption if an Ego–“I”.  Once Individuality is assumed, then there is “this”, there are other things.  If there is dissolution of this false Ego–“I” assumption, what is left ?  Without the “I”, what is the World & the Body that experiences that World ?  Without the “I”, what is left of those we call “you”, of others ?  Without the Ego–“I”–notion, what is our view of the Supreme Self ?  What has become of these ?  The 3 (the Individual, the World, the Supreme) are no longer 3.  What remains of them, and what has happened to their distinction ? Knowing or “naming” any of that “Triad” cannot compare to remaining without the false Ego–“I”–notion, because, without the false notion of  “I” , Pure Existence knows itself. It is not 3–fold. It is that which is ever Undivided.

The apparent interaction of things upon “thought” & thoughts upon “things” is entirely a play of thought, which is merely thoughts affecting thoughts. Thought itself projects itself into itself.  There is no “in” or “out” for such are only mere notions.  It is just like the appearance of a Dream thinker in a Dream.  There appear to be his perceptions of the objects & his interior thoughts, be they conceptions, associations, emotions, memories, etc.  The whole of the Dream, “inner” & “outer”, is actually just composed of thought appearing in various ways.

The Ego does not exist.  Otherwise do you admit of 2 selves ?  How can there be Ignorance in the absence of the Ego ?  If you begin Self-Inquiry, the Ignorance which is already non-existent will be found not to exist. Or else you will say it has “fled” away.  Ignorance pertains to the Ego. Why do you think of the Ego & also suffer ?  What is Ignorance again ?  It is that which is non–existent.

Suppositions, of whatever kind, involve naming or identifying or, in some way, defining oneself, the World, or the Supreme Self in relation to those suppositions, including suppositions regarding our own practice of Self-Inquiry. When we think about Self-Inquiry, do we do so with the assumption of being an Individual who is trying to realize, in a World, which he is attempting to transcend, & then also the Supreme Self, which we are trying to realize ?  All such suppositions fall far short of real Knowledge. Within the context of such suppositions, we have an idea of the Individual, the World, and the Supreme Self.  It is inherent in the very act of making such suppositions to define these things, but they are all considered only as long as the Ego–“I”–notion exists.

What is casually termed “mind” is only a collection, or movement, of thought.  It does not exist as such, and it is not an independent entity. If thought is absent, there is said to be no mind present. Thought itself is inert. When the knowing Consciousness is confounded with thought, there arises the notion of a separate knowing entity called the “mind.” Consciousness is the knowing aspect and is not a thought. No thought is Consciousness itself. Consciousness is the Self, and thus the Self is free from thought and free of the mind. All that appears is only thought: the world, the body, the senses, subtle experience, and of course, thinking, itself. All are known in thought only.

Take care of yourself.  Let the World take care of itself.  See your Self.   If you are the Body there is the gross World also. If you are Spirit all is Spirit alone.  Free yourself first & then see if the question if “others” arises afterwards.

If there seems to be Ignorance, for whom is it ?  Yes, for the Ego. Remove the Ego & Ignorance is gone. Look for it, the Ego vanishes & the real Self alone remains. The Ego professing Ignorance is not to be seen. There is no Ignorance in Reality.  All Scriptures are meant to disprove the existence of Ignorance.
