What does this say of the idea of individually knowing something ? What does it say about the Individual, or Ego–”I” ?  What does it say about the entire Universe ?  Just One is all this because for the Self there is no creation, no World, no “this”, no “other”, or any such conception.  The same One Self is known as the Witness, which is infinite Consciousness, for those who are meditating in the Mind, & as the Self which alone exists, for those who have realized Reality.  There can be no difference in Thatt, ever.  Whether speaking of Pure Existence, or of “all this”, still there is only One Existence. No change ever occurs for It.  We need never take the Experiencer, the Experiencing, & the objects of Experience to be real.  They are like images on a “Screen”, they are Illusions. Such are artificial names given to the One Existence, as if it were divided among many things.

What is called “the mind” is only the combination of thought & Consciousness.  That combination is an Illusion.  It is the Illusion of combining the ever Formless with Form.  Consciousness is the Self & cannot truly be combined with thought, for the Self is Formless & will not change its Nature.  The Self is Infinite & will not be added to.  The Self is real Existence that cannot be combined with false appearances any more than the Rope can be combined with the imagined Snake, or the Sand with the Water of a mirage.

The Ego-“I”-Self appears & disappears & is transitory, whereas the real Self is permanent. Though you are actually the true Self you wrongly identify the Real Self with the ego-self.

See if that mistake has actually come about.  The ego-self does not exist at all.  If you ask why does it give you trouble, ask: “To whom is the trouble ?”  The trouble also is imagined. Trouble & pleasure are only for the Ego.

The One Reality alone has become both the Seer & the Seen. The emphasis is not so much that the One has changed its Nature, but the inquiry: “What is all this ?” is the point. In our experience, the Subject & the Object appear. The Power by which they appear, the Light by which they are known, the “Screen” on which they are displayed, the “Ground”, or “Substrate”, That which illumines, or knows, as well as that which appears  as “I”, the Subject, & that which appears as the Object, the entire Universe, are all just One Reality, One Divine Essence. If we understand in this way, where is the room for believing that “the World is separate,” “I am separate,” & ““this is separate”.  Just One appears as all this. To know the Reality, therefore, we must know that One, & that One as it is, not just as that One appears in this “picture”, which is the Dream of this World. We must know the One’s Existence as it actually is. To know the One’s Existence, we need to know our own True Nature & realize our Nature to be that very One, the One of boundless Power, or God. When you have the idea, “I know this,” “I experience this,” the power of that knowing is the Self which is no small personal thing, but of boundless Power.

 Thought, itself, is experienced as if all these things. All are only thought. Thoughts join only to other thoughts & affect only other thoughts. Thought appears as Ideas, & thought itself appears as the things that concern those Ideas. Thought cannot join with the Self & cannot affect the Self.  Therefore thought cannot bind.  Thoughts affect only thoughts. The preceding thoughts generally determine the succeeding thoughts.

 There is no “goal” to be “reached”.  There is nothing to be “attained”.  You are the Self.  You exist always. Nothing more can be predicated of the Self than that it exists.  Seeing God or the Self is only being the Self or yourself.  Seeing is being.  You, being the Self, want to know how to attain the Self.  It is something like a man being at some place asking how many ways there are to reach that place & which is the best way for him. All that is required of you is to give up the thought that you are this Body & to give up all thoughts of the external things or the not-Self.

The Seer, the Subject, & also the Seen is all that is objective which in the Teaching of Non-Duality are like “images”.  Reality as Existence is like the “Screen”, the “Substrate” upon which all those “images” seem to be projected.  Reality as Consciousness is the Light” by whose illumination the Subject & Object can appear.  All of the forms, as an Effect, rest in the Cause, which is formless, but the Effect can never be different than the nature of the Cause. The Effect is the Cause appearing as the Effect.  The original Cause, which is God or the Supreme Self, is, therefore, all “this”.

The Self is never an object & can never be the known. It is always Consciousness itself. Therefore, the Self is ever of the Nature that is Transcendent of thought.  The Self is not known by thought, which means it is ever undefined by thought & cannot be bound by thought, no matter what the thought is.

True Knowledge does not create a new being for you, it only removes your ignorant Ignorance.  Bliss is not added to your Nature, it is merely revealed as your true Natural State, Eternal & imperishable. The only way to be rid of your grief is to know & be the Self.  How can this be unattainable ?

People say that they are not able to know the Self that is allpervading. What can I do ?  Even the smallest child says, “I exist; I do this; this is mine.”  So, everyone understands that the thing “I” is always existent. It is only when that “I” is there that there is the feeling that you are the Body, he is so & so, & so on. To know that the One that is always visible is one’s own Self, is it necessary to search with a candle ?  To say that we do not know the Real Nature of the Self which is not different but which is in one’s own Self is like saying, “I do not know myself.”

If there is an Ego“I”, there must be a source or a cause of it, & for that which is before the “I”, there originally was no “I”.  If we consider the Universe as existing or appearing, & if we consider the Ego“I” as existing or appearing, there must be a Cause, or Essence, that appears as these very “things”.  The Cause appears as the Effect. The Effect is only the Cause in that guise.  The original Cause, which is before “all”, is Undifferentiated & One.  What then is the nature of the Effect ?  As Reality was originally, so it is now and always. What Power is it that creates the “I” in everyone ?  What is the Power that can bring forth the entire Universe ?

 The Ego-“I” knows thought; but thought does not know the “I”.”  The true “I” is the unknown Knower of all knowing: this is true Knowledge. None of the attributes of thought are those of the Self.  How then can thought pertain to the Self ?  How then can thought define or confine the Self ?  The Self is free from thought.  Thought can never conceive of the Self.  The Self is never an object of thought.  Thought always has an “objective” element in it.  The Self is ever nonobjective.  There is no such thing as a “nonobjective ” thought.  Since the thought itself is always known & it is always the “thought of something”, be it gross (physical) or subtle (mental).  The Self is never an object & can never be the Known.  It is always Consciousness itself.  Therefore, the Self is ever of the Nature that is Transcendent of thought.  The Self is not known by thought, which means it is ever undefined by thought & cannot be bound by thought, no matter what the thought is.

 You may take up this or that spiritual practice to transcend non-existent limitations.  But if your spiritual practice itself assumes the existence of the limitations, how can it help you to transcend them ?  You are really the infinite Pure Existence, the Self.  You are always that Self & nothing but that Self.  Therefore, you can never be really ignorant of the Self. Your Ignorance is merely an imaginary Ignorance, like the Ignorance of the 10 Fools about the lost 10th man. It is this Ignorance that caused them grief.

Everything derives its “light” & its reality from the Absolute, but That  does not derive its Light or Reality from anything else. The Absolute does not depend on the World. The Absolute does not depend on the Ego“I”.  The Absolute does not depend on anything else. Rather it, itself, has become all “this”, without changing its Nature, for if its True Nature would change, it would not be all-powerful, & that which changed it would be all-powerful. One has become all this, & all this therefore is only that One.  You must know That as it is, within yourself.  It is the Reality in all that appears to exist. It is the Existence in all of the apparent Experiencers, or Seers.  It is the Consciousness in all the Knowing, Perceiving, & Cognizing. It is the only “thing” that there is.

 The Self is changeless. Thought is changeful.  How, then, can thought pertain to the Self ?  How, then, can thought define or confine the Self ?  The Self is singular, stateless & modeless. Thought is multiple, appearing as thoughts, modes, & states. How, then, can thought pertain to the Self ?  How then can thought define or confine the Self ?  The Self is homogenous.  Thought has many aspects.  How, then, can thought pertain to the Self ?  How then can thought define or confine the Self ?  The Self is continuous Existence-Consciousness.  Thought is sporadic & each thought is momentary.  How then, can thought pertain to the Self ?  How then can thought define or confine the Self ?  The Self does not rise & has no disappearance.  The rise & fall of thought can be observed by anyone who meditates with depth.  How then can thought pertain to the Self ?  How then can thought define or confine the Self ?  Thought, being objective, is the Known.  Thought has no knowing power of its own. The Self is the Knower, the silent Witness of all thought.  The Self is Consciousness, which is the Knower, & the Mind is among the Known. Since this is always so, how then can thought pertain to the Self ?  How then can thought define or confine the Self  ?

 In the parable of the “10th Fool”, from where was the 10th man brought in ?

Was he ever lost ? By knowing that he had been there all the while, did they learn anything new ? The cause of their grief was not the real loss of anyone.  It was their own Ignorance, or rather, their mere supposition that one of them was lost. Such is the case with you. Truly there is no cause for you to be miserable & unhappy. You yourself impose limitations on your True Nature of Infinite Existence, & then weep that you are but a finite creature.

The Ego who is supposedly “inbetween”, claiming the identity of Pure Existence, on the one hand, & the limitations of the Body form on the other, & who says, “I am undergoing this experience”    this is the one to be destroyed first, & he is destroyed by Self-Inquiry, by the Knowledge of his own nonexistence. Objective knowledge, training, & application of physical skills does not require an Ego-entity who believes he is 1/2Existence & 1/2Body. All those things be accomplished quite well without the Ego.

 With Self-Inquiry to know the Self, one can see that thought is a power capable of appearing in multiple ways with varied content.  The same power of thought may appear individually, in patterns, in modes, or as states of Mind.  Knowing this, one can take Sri Ramana Maharshi’s direct approach of liberating the Self from the Mind all at once.  We free our selves from the Mind, from thought, realizing that all Duality, which is all experience other than the Self, is a creation of the Mind.  Such creation is due to thoughts & is composed of thoughts.  Remaining free from thought requires one to remain free of dualistic notions regarding the Mind itself. The unmoving Self does not travel through the Mind, & thought does not drag the ever-still, transcendent Self about.

Further contemplating Immortality, identify with just that Pure Existence & not with the form of anything else. That is vitally important when Death is considered. In contemplating such an experience, you should also clearly distinguish between the natural motions for survival, the workings of adrenal glands & similar physical responses, & actual the fear of Death, which is the fear of going out of Existence. You can simultaneously have the same abilities to physically respond, for those are physical matters, & at the same time know your Self as the Truth. Nature’s way of attempting to preserve the bodily form as long as it can may continue as normal, but your inner Peace as Existence remains transcendently detached from all of it.

What is thought of as “external” is entirely in Consciousness, which is free from the Senses. The “external World” is a mere notion in Consciousness. Within the notion there appears the whole external World. It is one notion fragmented into the imagining of endless objects that are assumed to exist.  The one notion depends on the false “I am the Body” belief.  The World is a mere notion, an illusory appearance in one’s own Mind. Therefore it is called Maya, Illusion. Illusion is that which is not. Since the World is unreal, it can offer no Bondage. Being unreal, the World does not actually come to exist.  This is the reason that Maya is said to be “beginningless”.

That which is continuous is also enduring, that is permanent. That which is discontinuous is transitory. Therefore the State of Pure Existence is permanent & the Body & the World are not.  They are fleeting phenomena passing on the screen of ExistenceConsciousness which is Eternal & stationary.  The Deep Dreamless Sleep State is free from thoughts & the impression of thought on the Individual.  So Deep Dreamless Sleep cannot be altered by one’s will because effort is impossible in that condition.  Although nearer to Pure Consciousness, it is not fit for efforts to realize the Self.

Prana (LifeForce or Energy) can be said to enter & to exit the Body. One may regard the Prana as increasing & decreasing, or one may say the Prana remains the same & it is just that it is entering or exiting, or being particularized, or joining with the greater cosmic amount of Prana.  There are different ways of looking at this, but do “you” go in & out?  When the Body is alive & Prana seems to be animating it, are you in that Body ? If you find now that you are not in the Body, that there is clearly a distinction between the Body & you, & between the Prana & you, that very “you” is going to remain as it is after the Prana  no longer animates the Body. This Truth should become so totally your Identity that you are completely free. This is not theoretical. It is not even something meant to be only “believed” in, while you retain an experience that is otherwise.

The Seer of Truth is the Self, & the Self is Indivisible, Nonobjective, without exterior, undifferentiated, & 1withouta–2nd. Consciousness, Infinite & Undivided, sees none but Itself.  That which is not Consciousness does not see at all.  Lacking existence, that which is not Consciousness also lacks knowing.  As the Self, one does not see the World, & the World does not see oneself.  In Non-Duality, Pure Existence alone is Real. The World has never come to be, so it is said to be completely unreal. The World never was, is not, & never will be. The uncreated, unmodified, worldless Absolute alone exists. That alone exists, & That you are. The Real ever exists, & the unreal has never come to exists. The conclusion about this is known by the Knowers of Truth.

 When passing from Deep Dreamless Sleep to Waking the “I”thought [Individual self] must start & the Mind must come into play. Then thoughts arise & the functions of the Body come into operation. All these together make us say that we are awake.  The absence of all this is the characteristic of Deep Dreamless Sleep & therefore it is nearer to Pure Consciousness than the Waking State.   But one should not therefore desire to be always in Deep Dreamless Sleep.  In the first place it is impossible, for Deep Dreamless Sleep will necessarily alternate with the other 2 States.  Secondly it cannot be the State of Bliss in which the jnani is, for his state is permanent & not alternating. Moreover, the Deep Dreamless Sleep State is not recognised to be one of consciousness by people,  but the Sage is always aware. Thus the Deep Dreamless Sleep state differs from the state in which the Sage is established.

Further reflecting on Death (for the sake of spiritual motivation) if you are in the Body, there will be an out-of-the-body (OTB) experience shortly thereafter.  If you are not in the Body to begin with, in & out do not pertain to you. Where do you exist even now ?  Do you exist in the Body ?  Knowing for certain that you do not exist in the body, is there anywhere for you to “go” when the Body vanishes from your experience ?  The Illusion, or the Delusion, is to think that you are embodied & that, when the Body’s life expires, somehow the LifeEssence is snuffed out. Really, the Essence  is pure Consciousness, existing in & out of the Body, or beyond the “body-consideration” entirely. And it is the Body that appears & disappears, while the Essence, the pure Consciousness, always exists.

If the World appears, it & its knower are only the Self.  If there is no appearance, there is only the Self.  In the Knowledge of the un-changing, ever-same Reality, the Self alone exists. Thus, in Reality, there is no question of a World ever being created or ever appearing.  For whom would it appear ?  Since there is no 2nd self but only the One Self ever, the Self is the Seer of the World.  The World does not see the Self.  Existence is Consciousness, & the Self is That. There is no existence apart from Consciousness, the Self.  Realizing the Truth of the Self, one sees that there is no World.  It is not that the Seer of Truth does not see the world, as if this Knowledge were a sensory state, but rather the Seer of Truth sees “that there is no World.”

 Do you not admit that you exist in Deep Dreamless Sleep ?  And you are the same person that is now awake.  ls it not so ?  So there is a continuity in the Deep Dreamless Sleep & Waking States.  What is that continuity ?  It is only the state of Pure Existence.  There is a difference in the 2 States.  What is that difference ?  The incidents, namely: the Body, the World, & objects appear in the Waking State but they disappear in Deep Dreamless Sleep when there is no awareness of the Body or of the World.  But you must exist in Deep Dreamless Sleep in order to say, “I was not aware in my Deep Dreamless Sleep.” Who says so now ?  It is the wakeful person. The sleeper cannot say so. That is to say, the Individual who is now identifying the Self with the Body says that such awareness did not exist in Deep Dreamless Sleep. There is the continuity of Existence in all the 3 States, but no continuity of the Individual & the objects.

It is not too common for one to ponder one’s own death. One suppresses the thought of Death.  That orientation is again an intuition. It is true that: “I will be fine.” Unfortunately, the “I” is mixed up with some Form, such as the Body, & how fine the “I” really is this is not clearly discerned. Regardless of whether or not there are people who do not have a fear of Death, the Teaching of Self-Inquiry addresses those who recognize that they do have a fear of Death & wish to find the answer. The answer lies in the Realization of Pure Existence. So if we meet people who say, “Death means nothing to me,” do not worry them unnecessarily. For oneself though, if we notice our Mind’s agitation over the possibility of Death, we dive within & realize the Pure Existence, which has neither gain nor loss, neither beginning nor end. Know yourself to be That. Know That, which is misperceived as everyone, to be the only One.  Then, there can be no loss. There will not even be space for the idea that there could be loss.

 The One Self experiences itself everywhere always. The Self is just thought of as a “World” though there is really no such differentiated thing (as a separate World). Consciousness comprises the World, Space, Time, Matter, Motion, & Events, the Moments & the Eons, Things & People, the animate & the inanimate, the moving & the still, the large & the small, the living & the dead, the far & the near, the atoms & the galaxies, the root & the flower, the cause & the effect, & all else. The one Self is “all”. The one Self appears as all this Universe. The Universe appears in the Self.  The Self, being Formless & Infinite, does not appear in the World. The Self appears as the Universe, but really undergoes no modifications. It always remains as the perfectly full “Void” of Being.

 The Self is Pure Consciousness.  No one can ever be away from the Self.  The question is possible only if  there is Duality.  But there is no Duality in the state of Pure Consciousness.  The same person sleeps, dreams, & wakes up. The Waking State is considered to be full of beautiful & interesting things. The absence of such experience makes one say that the Deep Dreamless Sleep State is dull.

Regarding the fear of Death, it can also be the case that the identification is, at that moment, in the mind, with something else more than with the health & welfare of one’s own particular body. An example might entail great care for a loved one, a child, or someone else.  Such a person may say, “I have no fear of dying, but if my son or daughter would ever get even close to death, it would be a great tragedy.” (Some religious fundamentalists actually turn away from God when, in “His mysterious ways”, He takes from them a close loved one.) This is another case of a person not examining his own experience. Such is due to lack of Self-Inquiry. A person may experience this same “fear” as a sense of “loss” & “suffering” as well as fright. Few ponder this even though they are surrounded by Death all the time.

Reality does not bring forth the unreal. Being Non-Dual, Reality also does not bring forth anything real because Reality does not bring forth anything.  Ever-Existence, itself Unborn, creates not at all.  The unreal is also not born, for the unreal does not exist. Being unreal, the unreal does not disappear, anymore than the Dream World disappears for the Dream character when one awakens from both.  The World appears in Consciousness alone. The World is known by the Knower. The World is known in the Knower.  The World has no existence apart from the Knower, which is Pure Consciousness. The World appears in Consciousness, by the power of Consciousness.  The World is composed of Consciousness, & is known or experienced by Consciousness. All of the World is just Consciousness. The World has not the least degree of any other existence. One Existence-Consciousness exists everywhere always.

The Ultimate Truth is so simple & is nothing more than being in the pristine state. This is all that need be said.

Deep Dreamless Sleep, Dream, & Waking States are mere phenomena appearing on the Self which is itself stationary.  The Self is also a state of Pure Consciousness.  Can anyone remain away from the Self at any moment ?  This question can arise only if that were possible.

The question may as well be, “Am I nearer to myself in my sleep than in my waking state ?”

If we are very aware of the changes of Life & Death, & seek the answer, we arrive at a state in which we know the unmarred Perfection. For that Perfection, there is no flaw & nothing wrong ever. With the realization of that, Death loses its ability to make us suffer, which was not the purpose of Death anyway. Realizing the immortal Existence as one’s Self, there is not even room, not even space, for the thought of Death.

Two people could say that they do not have the fear of Death. For one, it might be because he never thinks about it & prefers not to do so. He does not want to deal with it. For the other, it may be because he has thoroughly known the Truth of the Absolute & has identified himself with that Absolute. Their words may be the same, & they may seem equally relaxed about Death, but their states would be very different.

 The World is constituted solely of Sense perceptions, usually from a supposed bodily location (or of some recording instrument, etc.).  There is no World apart from these.  So, the World is not “external”. The “external” is merely a conceptual interpretation of the Sensations. The Senses are known only by & in Consciousness.

 There is no one who does not say “I exist”.  The wrong knowledge of “I am the Body” is the cause of all the mischief.  This wrong knowledge must go. That is Realization.  Realization is not acquisition of anything new nor is it a new faculty.  It is only removal of all veiling.

If the Body of someone you do not know dies, will you suffer over the loss or disappearance of that body ?  Not very much.  If the body of someone you know dies, will you suffer over the loss or disappearance of that body ?  More.  If your body dies, will you suffer ?  Suffering is actually needless in all 3 cases. Krishna’s instruction to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita commences with, “Neither for the living nor the dead do the wise grieve.”  Why not ?  What do the “wise” know ?  What is the Wisdom that makes them Wise & enables them to be free of suffering regarding any of the living & the dead ?  What the wise know about the nature of the Self, to the extent that they are absolutely convinced, is that there is no one lost at any time. If we go along thinking that things will remain more or less just the way they are, we are in a very precarious situation & we are deluded.  The balance of Life & Death is with us all of the time & so we should take the proper steps to realize the Truth, which is immortal & blissful.  If you keep this in mind, your spiritual practice will always be very intense. Consequently, you practice Self-Inquiry to know the Truth as if it were the very last thing you were going to do.

Deep Self-Inquiry into the True Nature of the Knower himself will result in an absence of a defined, separate experiencer & thus of the supposedly experienced World. This yields the revelation of the one Infinite Existence of the Self.  The meaning of “All is the Self” or “All is Brahman” is comprehended in this Non-Dual Knowledge without a trace of anything other.  To experience a World is to conceive it.  The World is not actually a Perception, but a Conception. To conceive, or experience, a World, one must first consider oneself as some kind of Body or as in the Body. One must consider the Body as existing, & the Body as being “somewhere”.

That which really exists must also persist forever. That which appears anew will also be lost. Compare Deep Dreamless Sleep & Waking.  The Body appears in one State but not in the other. Therefore the Body will be lost.  Consciousness was pre-existent & will survive the Body.

One may imagine loss of Existence or Happiness, yet one knows intrinsically that such is meant to be there, & that Happiness & Bliss are both the Natural & the Eternal State. That is where the natural Discrimination lies for someone spiritually oriented, even though one may not cognize this. No one wants to go out of Existence. Everyone rightly supposes that Existence is one’s Happiness. There is corresponding suffering whenever there is a reminder of the mortality, impermanence of what we are regarding as our existence, such as the Body, which is not True Existence itself that which remains unseen.

 The Self is not produced by anything of the World, shares none of the World’ s limited qualities, & is not an object within the World. The Self is neither a Body nor located in a Body. Entertaining & debating various concepts or opinions regarding the World can continue only so long as there is no clear Discernment of the One who perceives the World.  Once there is deeper Knowledge regarding the Self, the questions about the World’s nature no longer arise. The Realization of the Unborn is the Realization of No-Creation. In the absence of this Knowledge, there may arise confusion such as: “If it is unreal, why does it appear; if it is unreal, why does it not disappear ?”  The confusion is rooted in the delusive supposition that the mere Senses are the determination of Reality.  Then the Knower is conceived as a sensory being engaged in an experience that is of the same nature (sensory) as himself.

 The Body & body-consciousness arise together & sink together. All this amounts to saying that there are no such limitations in Deep Dreamless Sleep, whereas there are those limitations in the Waking State.  These limitations are the Bondage.  The feeling “I am the Body” is the error.  This false sense of “I” must go.  The real “I” is always there.  The real “I” is here & now. The real “I” never appears anew & disappears again.

The Self is not defined by the World or worldly things.  The Self is not bound by the World or anything of the World.  The Self does not depend on the World in any way in order to exist. That which is true of the Existence & Consciousness of the Self is also true of the Bliss of the Self, these three not being actually 3, but 1 & the same thing. This Discernment yields Freedom from the illusory Bondage, both when the World is apparently perceived as well as when it is not so. By such Knowledge, one realizes that the Self is not of the World & is not in the World.

 Consciousness is indeed always with us. Everyone knows “I exist”.  No one can deny his own Existence. The man in Deep Dreamless Sleep is not aware.  While awake he seems to be aware.  But it is the same person.  There is no change in the one who slept & the one who is now awake.  In Deep Dreamless Sleep he was not aware of his Body & so there was no bodyconsciousness.

In the wakeful state, he is aware of his body & so there is body-consciousness. Therefore the difference lies in the emergence of body-consciousness & not in any change in the real Consciousness.

In the course of spiritual practice, we notice the presence of Life & Death, & we do not ignore such facts. In Illusion (samsara), people usually do not like to think about these things. Then when it stares them in the face as their own imminent death, or the death of someone close to them, they think about it. When the situation passes, their memory of such fades, & their thinking about Death also rapidly fades. Perhaps, it is because they do not have an answer for it or they do not know that the answer is really within. It is wise to observe that Life & Death are with us all of the time. Thus we take the proper steps to realize the Truth, which is immortal & blissful. If we keep this in mind, our practice will always be very intense. Consequently, we practice Self-Inquiry to know the Truth as if it were the very last thing we were going to do.

 The Self is permanent with no Creation or Destruction. The perception of the World depends on the changeful Senses. A change in the Senses brings a change in the object, in the perceived World. The Self does not change when the Senses do, for it is un-changing Existence & the unchanging Witness of all the changing Senses. A change of Mode, or state of Mind yields a corresponding change in the Senses & the perceived World. The Self is not changed, being un-changing Existence & Consciousness, & the Witness of the Mind as well as the Senses. The Self is One, partless, & indivisible.  The World is composed of innumerable parts & divisions. The Self has no form, & is purely Formless Existence.  The World is composed of forms, without which there is no World.  There is no formless World.

Simply remove Ignorance. That is all there is to be done. Liberation means release from Bondage which implies the present existence of Bondage. But there is no Bondage & therefore no Liberation either.

Any experience that which has a beginning must also end. Only when the ever-present Consciousness is realized will one’s experience be permanent.

For impersonal, unlimited Consciousness, there is no Life or Death. Consciousness continuously exists, & the one who says, “I had this or that experience,” is the Illusion. That “I” comes & goes, back & forth, while Consciousness continuously exists. This shows us the proper orientation & also what should be relinquished by means of knowing where we really exist.  Those who wisely pursue the Absolute Truth observe the basic facts of Life & Death. They aim to transcend Life & Death to remain as immortal Existence.

 By the term “World” is meant all that is perceived, all objects, all activities, all events, the forms of living beings, anything in Space & Time, & anything seen, heard, touched, or sensed in any manner. Transcendence of the world is Liberation from Bondage & Suffering in relation to all of this. Abandonment of the objective outlook constituting the World yields the perception of Reality as it is. Reality cannot be by anything of the World, but only by Knowledge of the Self. Where could one go in the World that one would be beyond the World  ?   Yet one’s real Existence is always beyond the World, & Knowledge reveals the True Nature of Pure Existence. The Self is changeless & permanent. The World is changeful & impermanent. Each object has a creation, a changeful duration, & a destruction. This is true for all objects & for the World as a whole, without exception.

 Self-Realization is for everyone.  Self-Realization makes no difference between the spiritual aspirants.  The very doubt, whether you can realize, & the notion “I-have-not-realized” are themselves the obstacles. Be free from these obstacles.

Liberation is not to be gained in the Future.  It is there forever, here & now. The experience is here and now. One cannot deny one’s own Self.

Pure Existence is the same as Happiness & Happiness is the same as Existence. One believes that there is Bondage & therefore seeks Liberation.  But there is no Bondage but only Liberation.

If there remains the tendency to misidentify with the Body, then, there are concerns brought in because of that Mis-identification. Because a Body dies, the “conqueror of death” cannot be the Body. Since the Senses perish, the “conqueror of death” cannot be anything perceivable by the Senses or a sensing entity. Since the Mind dies, the “conqueror of death” cannot be the Mind. If every thought dies, sooner or later, the “conqueror of death” cannot be something contained in thought.  The “conqueror of death” cannot be a product of thinking, & it cannot be comprehended in thought. There must be something beyond, but what is entirely beyond is innermost. That is your own Existence, which is your own True Nature.

Those who are detached from the World & the Senses, who are not identified with the Body, who perceive the transient nature of all in the World, & who yearn for the direct experience of the Knowledge of Reality as it is should practice Self-Inquiry. View the World as transitory, as inert, & as a passing Dream. Never expect the World to provide what is already yours: Happiness, Identity, & Reality. To transcend the World is to remain blissful, at Peace always, & free in the Knowledge of the unreality of the World & the Self’s freedom from that Illusion. This is the perception of Reality free of the Forms of Illusion. Absorption Worldless Being, true perception, transcendence of the World, limitless Freedom unaffected by anything of the World, direct experience of indivisible Existence, & true experience beyond debate or doubt are for those who inquire to know the Self, which is the sole-existent Reality.

You are the Self, you are already That.  You are ignorant of your blissful State.  Ignorance supervenes & draws a Veil over the pure Self which is Bliss.  Attempts are directed only to remove this Veil of Ignorance which is merely wrong knowledge.  The wrong knowledge is the false

Nonattached to anything ir any associations, to any form, inquire deeply into what the presumed associations are, because those various associations cause you to believe that you are in a given state, when really you are the One who is beyond all states. The associations cause you to think of being mortal & then perhaps passing into another state (re-incarnation, after-life, etc.).  But pure Consciousness is not encased in such limitations. Consciousness is not in a state that is going to pass into another.

Prana, the life energy is ultimately transient, whether viewed as one’s individual bodily Life-Energy or as all the manifest Life Energy (Cosmic Prana) . The Self is that which is Eternal. There is no time when one begins or ceases to exist.  This Self, which is Absolute Existence, ever is as it is.  So how could Prana be equated with the Self ? Therefore, the Self is not to be identified with the Prana, the Life-Energy, & does not bear the Prana as an attribute. The Self is free of Prana & all that manifests due to Prana.  The view of the World is a mirror image of the view of oneself.  The identity of oneself determines the definition of the World, since the Seer himself appears as the Seen; the “I” appears as “this”; Reality appears as the World  For the purpose of knowing Reality without veils, one should inquire to know oneself, giving up the objective outlook as well as the Ego to whom that objective outlook belongs.

Vasanas   mental tendencies will of themselves be destroyed if you remain “as you are”, remaining as the Self.

There is no “reaching” the Self.  If the Self were to be “reached”, it would mean that the Self is not here & now & that it is yet to be obtained. What is got afresh will also be lost. So it will  be  impermanent. What is not permanent is not worth striving for. So the Self is not “reached”

It is not being alive that enables one to be conscious, but Consciousness that knows the state of being alive. So how could Prana be equated with the Self ?  The Life-Energy seems to locate itself throughout the Body. The Self is not located in a Body or spatially in any manner. So how could Prana be equated with the Self ?  Prana functions, animating the Body & the Senses in various ways. The Self, which is Consciousness, remains as the “Witness” of Body, Senses, & World. The Self is the immovable Reality of Existence & not a function.  So how could Prana be equated with the Self ?  The Prana does not remain eternally since it manifests for some time, but then it is absorbed. It may be said to be absorbed into the great, Universal (Cosmic) Prana, which in turn is absorbed in the Absolute.  Or else Prana may be said to be absorbed in the Mind, which in turn is absorbed in the Absolute. The Self is itself the Absolute & is never absorbed into anything. That which actually exists always exists. That which can be absorbed, or which has a beginning & an end, is an unreal appearance.  Ultimately such does not exist.  The Self exists, & there is nothing else into which the Self can be absorbed.  So how could Prana be equated with the Self ?  The Prana depends upon the Self.  The Self does not depend upon the Prana.  There are ways to alter the Prana or its functions. The Self is unalterable Existence & un-changing.  One cannot modify Existence, & one cannot stand apart from Existence to attempt to modify it.  So how could Prana be equated with the Self ?

[Ramana]

Stillness or Peace is Self-Realization. There is no moment when the Self is not.  So long as there is doubt or the feeling of nonrealization, the attempt should be made to rid oneself of these thoughts. They are due to the Mis-identification of the Self with the not-Self.  When the not-Self disappears, the Self alone remains. To make “room”, it is enough that objects be removed.  “Room” is not brought in from elsewhere.

Whether the topiclesson concerns Death or other example, the wise Sages use the issue to turn the Mind inward, & drives you to the essence of Pure Existence, without any emphasis on the belief in any apparent reality of the issue examined, such as Death for instance. Fear of Death is actually needless for One who is not a Body, but the topic can serve the purpose of higher instruction, the liberating Teaching of Non-Duality. Just as Fear of Death seems intense but can be used wisely, so too everything else can be approached in the same way.  Every other suffering can be regarded as a minor reflection or version of the Fear or Death example.  And just as Death may either seem far off, or close, so too every unnecessary cause of suffering is best resolved in the Present because the suffering can begin now, with the fore-thought, even prior to the possible later occurrence.

Those who yearn to go beyond the illusory boundary of Life & Death, who desire to be beyond the limitations of Life, & who do not wish to suffer Death clearly discriminate.  They discriminate between Existence, or Consciousness; & Prana, or Life Energy. “Prana ” signifies the LifeEnergy which seems to animate the Body & the Senses, without which they are inert. Prana in various combinations with the Body, Senses, & the Mind is that which is responsible for the experiences called “physical” & “subtle.” Without such animating Energy, there is no bodily or sensory experience.  A corpse has no experience & its Sense organs, though intact, are not animated & do not produce any experience.

If a man thinks that his Happiness is due to external causes & his possessions, it is reasonable to conclude  that his Happiness must increase with the increase of possessions & diminish in proportion to their diminution.  Therefore if he is devoid of possessions, his Happiness should be nil.  What is the real experience of man ?  Does it conform to this view ?

In Deep Dreamless Sleep man is devoid of possessions, including his own Body.  Instead of being unhappy he is quite happy.  Everyone desires to sleep soundly. The conclusion is that Happiness is inherent in man & is not due to external causes.  One must realize the Self in order to open the store of unmixed Happiness.

Like mirage water, an Illusion has no value.  For this reason illusory “physical signs & responses” tell us nothing about Non-Dual Reality, nor about our Realization of Reality, Enlightenment, Liberation.  In which case, one cannot expect the Body to exhibit perfect physical responses in every situation, for Realization is in the category or “realm” of Reality, rather than physical Illusion.  Nor could one expect that same illusory Body to be totally unresponsive or inert.  Absence of fear would seem to be one contradiction to the above. No longer seeing our Happiness as dependent on illusory worldly or bodily circumstances, there is no longer a reason to fear, no more fear in Realization. Removal of fear, all fears, in no “interferes” with apparent “actions” in the World.

The Senses depend on the Self. The Self exists as it is, innately nondependent on the Senses. This is the highest state of Detachment. As pure Being, one is always detached from the Senses & thus to the whole World perceived by the Senses. But the Self is not the Senses and is not experienced by the Senses. The Senses are capable of perceiving Sense objects only, & the Self is not a material object.  The sensory experience is only that of sensation, & not of a separate sense & object. The Self is not a sensation or a product of sensations. So how can the Senses be considered to be the Self ?  The Self is the “Eye of the eye”, unseen by the eye.

That which exists, is only Sat (Reality-Existence)That is called Brahman.  The luster of Sat is Chit (Consciousness) & its Nature is Ananda (Bliss)These are not different from Zsat.  All the 3 together are known as Sat-Chit-Ananda.

Perfect Bliss is Brahman.  Perfect Peace is of the Self.  That alone exists & is Consciousness.

That which is called Happiness is only the Nature of the Self.  The Self is not other than perfect Happiness.

That which is called Happiness alone exists.  Knowing that fact & remaining in the State of Self, enjoy Bliss eternally.

If you want to know how it is after Death, you will want to find out what your Existence is now, which is the same as it was before you were born.  As long as there is some association of the Self with the Body, it is difficult to get beyond the notion that there are different states, such as Life & Death. Obviously, from the bodily perspective, there is a living state & a dead state, the state in which the senses are operative & the state in which the senses cease. This is an example of difference. If you, in your own True Nature, have no connection with the Body and with the Senses, then your experience is that “even now” you rest in your eternal Existence & not a particular moment in a particular lifetime.

The Senses, though, are determined by conditions such as the condition of the sense organ, the environment, the experience of those.  That experience is the result of the interaction of what appears to have become split in consciousness.  The object & the instrument used to know it seem split from the mental attention given to or removed from the Senses. From a higher view, in the 1 Mind, all 3 changing factors (the object, the instrument, & the mental attention) appear, determining the 5 Sense experiences.

[Ramana]

The Mind turned inwards is the Self.  Turned outwards, the Mind becomes the Ego & all the World.  Gold made into various ornaments, we call by various names. But all the ornaments are gold.  The one term (gold) is real, the many are mere Names & Forms.

The Mind does not exist apart from the Self, that is, the Mind has no independent existence.  The Self exists without the Mind, never the Mind without the Self.

Seek your Peace in That  which can conquer everything in Time & everything that is transient.  Finding That  within yourself, centered in yourself, remain as the Timeless, the Eternal, the Deathless, without the least doubt & without the least wavering. In this, Life’s purpose is fulfilled.  Before the Body exhausts its allotted time, the Ego I”notion should die.  That is the only Death necessary.

In Self-Inquiry, note that each Sense takes a turn being predominant & then fades due to a change of the sense organ, the mental attention, & similar factors. The Senses appear only in the Waking State. With each state of mind, they change. Upon the death of the body, which is not the Self, the senses are lost entirely. Rarely are all the 5 senses active, or experienced, simultaneously, but Existence is always wholly present. The senses are just a momentary function. The Self is steady, self-existent Reality, permanent, and not a function of some other thing. It is Being and not a doing or activity. The Self is not determined by any conditions and is itself without any conditions whatsoever.

[Ramana]

In questioning why should the 3 States (Waking, Dream, Deep Dreamless Sleep) seem to come & go on the Real State or the screen of the Self, ask instead: “Who puts this question ?”

Does the Self say these States come & go ?  It is the Seer who says these come & go.  The Seer & the Seen together constitute the Mind (subject & object).  See if there is such a thing as the Mind. Then the Mind merges in the Self & there is neither the Seer nor the Seen. So the real answer to the question is: “The 3 States (Waking, Dream, Deep Dreamless Sleep) neither come nor go.”

The Self alone remains as it ever is. The 3 States owe their existence to non-inquiry & Self-Inquiry puts an end to them. However much one may explain, the fact will not become clear until one attains Self-Realization & wonders how one was blind to the self-evident & only Existence so long.

As regards the fear of Death, the very notion of going out of existence is absurd for you who are the Self’s own Existence. This must be realized experientially, vividly, by a profound Self-Inquiry into your own True Nature to see what you actually are. What are you in your own Existence ?  The Self, your own Existence as it truly, naturally is, is what was proclaimed in ancient times, & now also, as the “Immortal”.  Can the Immortal fear mortality ?  Can that which is Knowledge itself entertain Ignorance ?  Where will there be the space for Ignorance in Knowledge ?  Where will there be space for the thought of death in your Immortal Existence ?

 The Self is changeless, continuous, permanent Pure Existence. The Senses are changeful, discontinuous, & impermanent. The Senses are lost, dulled, or altered in Death, old age, & illness. The Senses change during the lifetime, from infancy until the end of the Body. The Senses are changing all the time, alternately transforming into dull & acute states. ( subject as they are to the 3 guna-s  the qualities of tamas, inertia; rajas, agitation; & sattva tending toward the light of Knowledge.

 There is no essential difference between Dream & the Waking State except that the Dream is short & the Waking long.  Both are the result of the Mind.  Because the Waking State is long, we imagine that it is our “real” state.  But our Real State is turiya or the 4th  State which is always as it is & knows nothing of the 3 States of Waking, Dream, or Deep Dreamless Sleep. Because we name these 3 “states” we name the 4th  State also turiya.  But is it not a state avastha, but simply the Real & Natural State of the Self.  When this is realized, we know it is not a turiya or 4th  State, for a 4th  State is only relative.  So at times the term used is turiyatita (beyond the 4th ), the Transcendent State.

After the dissolution of the Ego“I”notion, after the utter relinquishment of the assumption of existing as an individual entity, in them there is no space for the thought of death.  If one seems to be an Individual, there is plenty of room for fear, unhappiness, suffering, & “bondage”.  With the demise, or utter dissolution, of the Individual, there is just this space-like, pure Consciousness. Consciousness is space-like in its formlessness, yet it is packed full with the perfection of its own Existence.  There is not a gap, not even a particle-sized space, for anything else to be.

Freedom from misidentification with the Senses is Knowledge. Knowledge is Liberation, & since one seeks to know Reality & not create it, for it always exists.  Therefore one should discern clearly the Self, its innate freedom from the Senses, & its freedom from all the limitations of the Senses. The Self is singular and indivisible Existence. The senses are multiple and divided. The senses themselves are objective, the known, just as the sense objects are. The Self is nonobjective, ever the knower, of the nature of Existence-Consciousness. So, how can the senses be considered to be the Self ?

There is truly only 1 State, that of consciousness or Existence.  The 3 States of Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep be real. They simply come & go. The Real will always exist.  The “I” or Existence that alone persists in all the 3 States is Real. The other 3 States are not real & so it is not possible to say they have such & such a degree of reality.

Existence or Consciousness is the only Reality. Consciousness plus waking, we call Waking. Consciousness plus sleep, we call Deep Dreamless Sleep.  Consciousness plus dream, we call Dream. Consciousness is the screen on which all the pictures come & go. The screen is real, the pictures are mere shadows on it.  Because by long habit we have been regarding these 3 States as real, we call the State of Pure Consciousness the 4th (turiya). There is however not really a 4th State, but only 1 State.

Pure Existence, which is the Self, cannot have the fear of going out of existence. The one who has or generates the fear of going out of existence is that very one who is seemingly a mortal Individual.  If he seeks his source & his “refuge” in the Immortal One, which is his real Existence, his Individuality vanishes, & so does the fear of Death, which is his fear of a loss of Existence or the fear of a loss of Happiness.

One’s freedom from the Senses must be firm & natural for there to be Realization. This necessitates the Knowledge of the Self’s transcendence of the Senses. The Self is Infinite Consciousness, unchanging Existence, perfectly full Bliss. Vast & Space-like, Formless & unconditioned, is the Self.  Of immense, silent Peace, ever-shining & motionless, is the Self.  Within the Self., seemingly but without actually occurring, there is imagined the realm of objective experience, manifesting as the World perceived by the 5 Senses. There appear to be 5 kinds of Senses with their corresponding kinds of Sense objects. Within the realms of the Senses, a great variety of sensations & an apparently uncountable number of Sense objects arise. These are the Sense experiences of living beings, which are differentiated from one another by means of Mis-identification with the Body. Like the surface ripples & foam on the waves in the ocean of Consciousness, like clouds in the sky of pure Existence, are the Senses. The Self is Existence-Consciousness. To confound the Self with any or all of the Senses, in any way, is Ignorance.

A person can be in this World merely as a Witness.  An analogy is given about the Light that is kept on the Stage of a Theatre.  When a drama is being played, the Light is there, which illuminates, without any distinction, all the actors, whether they be kings or servants or dancers, & also all the audience. That light will be there before the drama begins, during the performance, & also after the performance is over. Similarly, the Light within, that is the Self, gives Light to the Ego, the Intellect, Memory, & the Mind without itself being subject to processes of growth & decay. Although during Deep Dreamless Sleep & other States there is no feeling of the Ego that Self remains attributeless, & continues to shine of itself.

Actually, the idea of the Self being the Witness is only in the Mind.  Such is not the Absolute Truth of the Self.  Witnessing is relative to objects witnessed.  Both the Witness & his object are mental creations.

You also become deathless by losing that which is perishing. For one who adheres to the Absolute, what dies first, even before the Body dies is the Ego“I”thought, which is the Ego-notion.  To attain that perishing is a wonderful attainment.  It is not fearful, but it is the destruction of all fear. Ego-loss is always blissful. T here is no such thing as fearful Ego-loss. There is fearful Ego-clinging. Where there is Ego clinging, there is fear; where there is the Ego, there is Duality. The Upanishad scripture says, “Where there is a 2nd, there is fear.”  A “2nd” refers to someone other than the Absolute.  A “2nd” refers to the Zego, & a “2nd” refers to Duality, which is dependent entirely on the Ego. If the Ego & Duality are present, there will be fear. If the Ego subsides, fearlessness is one’s Natural State.

By such Self-Inquiry, the Knowledge that the Self is innately transcendent of the Senses & not bound by the Senses in any manner shines. Those who would know the Self by Knowledge cease to regard the Senses as the measure of Reality & of the Self. This non-sensory Knowledge reveals the Self’s freedom from the Senses & sets one free of the limitations of the Senses. Those who know that there is neither permanence of the Senses nor Happiness via them.

Apparent reality is like a Cinema.  The screen is always there but several types of pictures appear on the screen & then disappear.  Nothing “sticks” to the screen, it remains a screen.  Similarly, you remain your own Self in all the 3 States (Waking, Dream, Deep Dreamless Sleep).  If you know that, the 3 States will not trouble you, just as the pictures which appear on the screen do not “stick” to it.  On the screen, you sometimes see a huge “ocean” with endless waves. That disappears.

Another time, you see fire spreading all around.  That too disappears. The screen is there on both occasions.  The screen did not get wet with the “water” nor did it get burned by the “fire”.  Nothing affected the screen.  In the same way, the things that happen during the Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep do not affect you at all.  You remain your own Self.  Although people have all 3 States (Waking, Dream, Deep Dreamless Sleep), these do not affect them.  All these states come & go. The Self is not bothered, it has only 1 State.

Supposed Self-Inquiry that is the looking for a “what” is spiritually useless. Actual Self-Inquiry is looking for “Who ?” is looking.  The first one leaves the Ego“I” solidly intact. That is the Illusion, but it is being left solidly intact. In the other, the “I” must be the first to die. It is totally different. Instead of “accumulating” something, in terms of more objective knowledge, you are eliminating the very core of objective knowledge, of Illusion.  There is dissolution of the very “knower” who would be involved in the accumulating.

 Those who would know the Self by Knowledge cease to regard the Senses as the measure of Reality & of the Self. This non-sensory Knowledge reveals the Self’s freedom from the Senses & sets one free of the limitations of the Senses. Those who know that there is neither permanence of the Senses nor Happiness via them, who do not equate pleasure with Happiness or pain with Sorrow, but recognize that Happiness & Sorrow are determined by Knowledge of the Self & Ignorance respectively. They desire to experience the spiritual Truth beyond the Senses, take recourse to Self-Inquiry to know the Self.  By such Self-Inquiry the Knowledge that the Self is innately transcendent of the Senses & not bound by the Senses in any manner shines.

Liberation is our very nature. We are That.  The very fact that we wish for Liberation shows that Freedom from all Bondage is our Real Nature.  Liberation is not to be freshly acquired.  All that is necessary is to get rid of the false notion that we are bound.  When we achieve that, there will be no desire or thought of any sort.

In saying, “I had a Dream; I was in Deep Dreamless Sleep; I am awake,” you must admit that you were there in all those 3 States.  That makes it clear that you were there all the time. If you remain as you are now, you are in the Wakeful State.  This State becomes hidden in the Dream State.  The Dream State disappears when you are in Deep Dreamless Sleep.  You were there then, you are there now, & you are there at all times. The 3 States come & go, but you are always there.

To make Self-Inquiry most effective, assume that I you not know an answer to: “Who am I ?” But you know that you exist; you cannot not know that.  Bur assume that you just really do not know the answer to: “Who am I ?” & really try to find out.  That way you then rely on experiential knowledge rather than an image or an idea. The idea of “existence” is far removed from actual Pure Existence. That it is so far removed, not even close, is generally true of everything of a spiritual nature. The idea of Bliss is not the experience of Bliss, & the experience of Bliss does not resemble any idea about Bliss. Likewise, the idea of Consciousness has nothing to do with Consciousness.

The Self ever is as it is, with no modifications. What the Self is, the Self is always. The Body, with its transience & changing nature, is not an attribute of the Self. The Self does not possess a Body. Otherwise, the Self would always have that body, which is not so. Possession of a body is not in the nature of the Self, & the Self, being Reality, never changes its True Nature. The Self does not have a Body, as possession implies division, or the Duality of the possessor & the possessed & posits their relationship. Pure Existence is Non-Dual & Indivisible. Pure Existence is Absolute & Infinite. Pure Existence is not in relation to anything. There is not anything to which Existence could have a relationship, as a finite object might.  The Self does not have a Body, as an attribute can only be for a “thing” & Pure Existence is not a thing.

It is false to speak of Realization.  What is there to realize ?  The Real is as it is always.  We are not creating anything new or achieving something which we did not have before.

If we dig a well & create a huge pit, the Space in the pit or well has not been created by us.  We have just removed the earth which was filling the Space there.  The Space was there then & is also there now.  Similarly we have simply to throw out all the age-long samskaras [innate tendencies] which are inside us.  When all of them have been given up, the Self will shine alone.

Make sure that all of your Self-Inquiry & that which is truly Knowledge, is purely experiential.  If in your Mind, you think, “I know this,” & you are not immediately, then & there, having the experience of the perfect fullness of Truth, you do not really know.  It is just empty echoes in the Mind.  When you start with your Existence, as you described, you start with your experience, & when you question, “Who am I ?”  you pursue experiential real Knowledge. When you say to yourself, “I know that,” but you do not really have a clear Knowledge of who knows that, further Self-Inquiry is worthwhile. The 2 approaches (Self-Inquiry & saying to yourself, “I know that”) are not even related to each other.

In Delusion, one thinks that the Self, of the nature of Existence-Consciousness, perishes, rather than that the bodily definition, being with a beginning & false, cannot last. Existence-Consciousness is purely bodiless & has neither Life nor Death. In Knowledge, this is clearly evident. Thus, one who is absorbed in this Knowledge of the Self remains in imperturbable Bliss. The Self is not located in a Body. The Self is not in space. The Self is not located in relation to a Body. That is: the Self is not in or out of a Body. The Self is simply undefined by the Body.

If the idea “I am the Body” is accepted, the “selves” are multiple. The State in which this idea vanishes is the Self since in that State there are no other objects.  The Self is One only.

Since the Body itself does not exist in the Natural outlook of the Real Self, but only in the extroverted outlook of the Mind which is deluded by the power of Illusion, to call Self, the Space of Consciousness, the possessor of the Body is wrong.

The World does not exist without the Body, the Body never exists without the Mind, the Mind never exists without Consciousness & Consciousness never exists without Reality.  For the wise one who has known Self by diving within himself, there is nothing other than Self to be known.

Since the Ego which identifies the Form of a Body as “I” has perished, the wise one is the Formless Existence-Consciousness.

The jnani who has realized the Self knows he is the Self & that nothing, neither his Body nor anything else, exists except for the Self.  To such a one what difference could the presence or absence of a Body make ?

The one who does not understand the Eternal seems to dwell in a Mind & in a Body. The Mind & in a Body do not conqueror of Death. The Body is born, & the Body dies. The Mind that is created is destroyed. Do not seek “refuge” there. Do not place your identity there. Do not place your hopes there. Do not place your hopes to find what is Real, to find your Happiness, & to find out who you are, seemingly in the Body & the Mind.  Seek “refuge” only in that which, being Innately Immortal, can conquer Death.  The same holds for conquering Time. If you are in the Mind, you are in Time. It becomes obvious, even painfully so, that if you are misidentified with the Body, you are in Time.  But are we the Body or the Mind ?  Where do you really “dwell” ?

The Body is an Illusion in Time & Space. The Self is not in Time & Space.  How, therefore, can the Self be equated with the Body ?  The notions of an existent Body & any notion that the “I” is the Body are only delusion, utterly dependent upon the conceptions. The Self is self-existent & not a notion or a product of a concept. The Self is naturally without effort, thought, notion, or becoming anything other than what it is. The Self is the true “I”. Therefore, the Self is not the Body. The Self is bodiless, un-changing, indivisible, unborn, undying, indestructible, ever-existent, continuous, formless, partless, beyond the elements or matter, & also non dependent & self-existent forever. This is beyond all doubt. The Self is motionless & actionless. The Body moves & acts.

[Ramana]

To talk of knowing the Self, there must be 2 “selves”, one a knowing “self”, another the “self” which is known, & the “process” of knowing.  Self-Realization is simply being oneself, not knowing anything or becoming anything.  If one has Self-Realization then one is That which alone exists & which alone has always been.  One cannot describe that State. One can only be that. But to speak of Self-Realization raises the question: “How to real-ize or make Real that which alone is Real ?”

The State in which the thought “I” [the Ego] does not rise even in the least, alone is Self, is alone is God.  The Self alone is also the Individual, [the jiva].  Self alone is this Universe of billions of years.

All other knowledge is only trivial knowledge. Self-Knowledge alone is the Real & Perfect Knowledge.  Know that the many objective differences are notreal but are rather mere superimpositions on Self, which is the form of True Knowledge.

Freedom from the fear of Death is Freedom from Name & Form, freedom from the Body & the Mind, freedom from the Individual, & freedom from everything that is changeful. So fear of Death becomes a motivating factor. If you fear Death or destruction of any kind, seek “refuge” in the Changeless One.  Seek refuge in that which has the power to transcend Death &, therefore, to conquer Death. That One is the innermost Consciousness, the immortal Existence within you. Seek Peace & Happiness in That  alone.  For those who have done so, the Ego“I”notion is the first to attain Death.

 The Self is nondependent Existence.  The Self exists regardless of the Senses & corresponding Thoughts. The Self is directly & immediately known. The Self is not known through something else. The Body is entirely dependent on Sense perception in order to appear. The Senses depend upon the Mind. There is no Body apart from Sense perception & the Mind. How, therefore, can the Self’s Existence be equated with the Body ?

The Body has no sense of “I”.  The True “I” belongs to Pure Existence. When the “I” sense is confounded with the Body, such is Delusion, & the Self is then assumed to be a bodily being or an embodied entity. There is no actual experience of being a Body. There are only Sense perceptions, which are misconstrued in Delusion. There is actual Existence, with its own unbroken continuity, the invariable, constant knowledge that you exist. There is no memory of being a Body. There is the timeless knowledge of Existence. Memory is always only of something objective, yet the object (Body, etc.) itself does not exist. So the memory of it is also unreal & cannot actually exist.

The Self is ever-present. What kind of help does one require to know oneself ? The Self is not something new.  The Self is Eternal & remains the same all along.  The Self  is not light, not darkness. The Self is only as it is. The Self cannot be defined.  The best definition for the Self is: “I am that I exist.”

The Self is only Pure Existence. The State of Self-Realization is not attaining something new or

reaching some goal which is far away, but simply being that which you always are & which you always have been. All that is needed is that you give up your “realization” of the “not-true as true.”

Many regard as Real that which is notreal.  We have only to give up this practice on our part. Then we shall realize the Self as the Self.  The Self is selfevident & transcends the Seer & the Seen. There is no Seer there to see anything. The Seer who is seeing all this now ceases to exist & the Self alone remains.

In Delusion, Pure Existence is misidentified with “something” that perishes. As soon as there is Misidentification with any Form, there is correspondingly a fear of Death, a fear of going out of existence, for every Form has a creation & a destruction.   If the Misidentification is with the Body, there is the commonly known fear of death of the body.  If the Misidentification is with something subtle (“astral”, “prana”, “lifeenergy”) or mental (a thought form), there is the fear of that thought form being destroyed. Thus, there is fear of destruction, which is the fear of Death. One who has fear of Death can find that which is a “refuge” from Death only in that which is unchanging by its nature, That which has neither Birth nor Death. Those who have a fear of Death should seek a Peace that will not be destroyed & so seek Freedom from the perishing.

The Self is attributeless Existence. The Body is known by its perceived attributes, apart from which there is no Body. How therefore, can the Self’s Existence be equated with the Body ? The Self is continuous. It does not commence at Birth & it does not cease at Death. Existence does not have the attribute of “living” or “dead.” Existence & the Knowledge of Existence are full & not partial.  Knowledge of Existence is not sporadic & does not move about to different parts. The Existence of the Self is the constant background of the Body’s appearance & disappearance. Likewise, the Self is the constant background of the Waking & other states of Mind (Dream & Deep Dreamless Sleep). The Body is discontinuous in several ways. For the Body, there is Life & Death. The experience of the Body is sporadic in perception, with only one or a few parts, limbs, or senses experienced at any one time. Never is one aware of all of it at once. The Body appears only in the Waking State of Mind. How therefore can the Self’s Existence be equated with the Body ?

Jnana, the final & unobstructable state of True Knowledge, alone is Non-Attachment. Jnana alone is Purity, the attainment of God, is devoid of forgetfulness of Self & alone is Immortality.  Jnana alone is everything.

You are Consciousness.  Consciousness is another name for you.  Since you are Consciousness there is no need to attain or cultivate it. All that you have to do is to give up being conscious of other things, that is of the not-Self.  If one gives up being conscious of them then pure Consciousness alone remains, & that is the Self.

There is no Duality. Your present knowledge is due to the Ego & is only relativeRelative knowledge requires a Subject & an Object, whereas the Consciousness of the Self is Absolute & requires no Object.

Memory also is relative, requiring an Object to be remembered & a Subject to remember.  When there is no Duality, who is to remember whom ?

With Self-Inquiry to know our own true Existence, we will find that there is no room for an Ego“I”, let alone room for the fear of Death. What is it that can conquer Death ?  Only That which is deathless can conqueror the fear of Death. Thus is how the conquering of Death first can come about: no one wishes to cease to exist. This is because there is the intuition that Happiness is identical with Existence. If unhappiness were identical with Existence, everyone would want to go out of existence, but everyone wishes to remain without ceasing.  This is because there is this intuition that Existence is indeed Happiness.

The Body is composed of matter, the very same that is contained in the food it consumes. Why should one regard that as oneself ?  Before eating it, it is not regarded as oneself. After eating, food & the Body it builds are by Delusion, regarded as oneself provided one does not regurgitate it. After it passes along the system of digestion, it is certainly not regarded as oneself. Similar is it with the parts of the Body. They are regarded as oneself only so long as they are connected with the rest of the Body. The Mis-identification is thus arbitrary & delusively associated with proximity to the rest of the form of the Body. How therefore can Existence be equated with the Body ?  The Self is not momentary but is permanent without a moment’s interruption. Its Existence does not cease even in the absence of perception. The Body is momentary. It endures but for one lifetime. It appears only in the moments of perception.  How therefore can Existence be equated with the body ?  The Self is nonobjective & ever the Knower. The body is objective & always only the Known.  How therefore can the Self’s Existence be equated with the Body ?

Reality must be always Real.  Reality is without Names & Forms. What underlies apparent Names & Forms is this Reality. Reality similarly underlies limitations, being itself Limitless.  Reality is not bound.  Reality unrealities, itself being Real.  Reality is that which exists.  Reality is as It is.  Reality is inexplicable & transcends speech.

Reality is Pure Consciousness & remains when Ignorance is destroyed along with knowledge of objects.

The Self alone exists. In that real form of Brahman, which is abundant Self-awareness, there is not the least Ignorance.

Reality shines fully, without sorrow & without a Body, not only when the World is known but also when the World is not known.  This is your real Form, the radiance of Existence-Bliss, in the form of one Consciousness shining equally within & without, the Supreme & blissful Primal Reality.

Let the notion of Individuality (Ego“I”notion) be the first to die in us. Seek our sanctuary, our refuge, that is our Peace & Freedom, in that which is alone capable of conquering death.  If we place your faith in something that will perish, no good can come of it.  If we put our faith & our conviction in that which is inherently Immortal, the Eternal Self, we find “refuge” there.  We do not depend on anything else or regard anything else as being truly important. We do not count on anything else for our Happiness or for our peace. Indeed, we do not attempt to hold up anything else as our identity, but take refuge in the Absolute.

 The Self is changeless Existence. The Body changes continuously, even if this change is noticed only after some time. How therefore can Existence be equated with the Body ? The Self is birthless. There is no time when the Self is not. There is no experience, no knowledge, & no memory of nonexistence or of the commencement of existence. The Body has a birth. How therefore can Existence be equated with the Body ?  The Self is un-changing. There is no increase or decrease in Existence. The Body has growth & decay. How therefore can Existence be equated with the Body ? The Self is deathless. There is no time when Existence is not, & nonexistence cannot even be imagined without oneself “existing” to imagine so. The Body is transient & is subject to Death. How, therefore can Existence be equated with the Body ?  The Self is partless, indivisible, homogeneous, pure Existence. This Existence is beyond its name. The Body is a multiplicity of elements & organs, a conglomerate of cells, apart from which there is no entity that can be referred to as a “Body.”  The Body is matter. The Self is immaterial. How therefore can Existence be equated with the Body ?

When we have abandoned the false identity with the notion Ego“I”, all that remains is Absolute Existence, & that is Innately Immortal. There is not even any room for the fear of Death in the Absolute, Undivided Existence. No one wishes to go out of existence.  Intuitively, everyone knows that Happiness is connected with existence.  We do not wish to go out of existence because we do not wish to lose our Happiness. This desire to remain happy & to exist lies at the very root of the fear of Death, which occurs when we mix up the Self with what is not the Self.  If there is an Ego“I”, there is that which is mortal (the Body, etc.). If we are without the Ego“I”notion, there is no Death, no fear of going out of Existence, & no fear of losing our Happiness.

Knowledge is Realization.  Knowledge neither something “done” nor is it any bodily transformation, but it is the comprehension of what is true. The Self is formless, birthless, deathless, & unchanging. It is eternal & infinite Existence-Consciousness-Bliss. Realization of this Existence-Consciousness-Bliss results from liberating the Self, by the essential Discrimination inherent in Self-Inquiry, from the illusory Bondage of Ignorance, which is composed of the delusive assumption that the Self is something other than the true Existence that it is. It is possible to realize this true Existence only if one is thoroughly free of the Ignorance that consists of Mis-identification with the Body, for a Body has form, birth, death, change, does not last forever & is not Infinite. As long as there is any Mis-identification with the Body, the Real Nature of the Self will not be known.  Or else the Self will be misconceived in terms of the limitations of the Body. When such misconception is relinquished by a deep Self-Inquiry into one’s actual Existence, the nature of the Self is self-evident.

Once we note that we seem to be in the “sphere” of Illusion, we naturally want to be out of it.  Our True Nature is Immortal, but having been confused with what is mortal (the Body, etc.), we fear the end of that “mortal existence” & seem subject to mortality.  If our Pure Existence can be distinguished from that which is mortal part (the Body, etc,), the fear of Death will disappear entirely, once & forever. We will have abandoned the false identity with the notion Ego“I”.

Remain detached from the Body, its attributes, & its activities. Utilize the bodily form, while it is alive, as an instrument for selfless activity inspired by Wisdom, by the desire for Liberation, & by the immensity of Grace, acting with corresponding equanimity, purpose, & devotion. The bodily activities are used as an instrument that expresses the Divine. By contemplation on its wondrous workings, the Body may be viewed as a reminder of the supreme Consciousness by which it appears, as does appear the entire Universe. The emphasis is placed, not on the “reminder”, but on that of which one is reminded.  Remain unmoved by pleasure & pain, motion & inactivity, birth & death. For invariable Bliss, one must know one’s freedom from the Body & all bodily attributes.

What Sri Ramana describes is not a change of states, but what actually exists. From false assumptions & its consequent perspective of an “I”, we may seem to conceive of the 3: the World, the Individual, & the Supreme Self.  Without the “I”thought, there is no Illusion. Between the apparent states of “with an ‘I’ ” and “without an ‘I’ ” there is actually no separation, since they are not actually 2 existent states. The “with an ‘I’ “notion is totally illusory. Without it, there is just the Innate. If you are seeking an “in between” state for the purpose of spiritual progress, it is found in the dissolution of that “I”. The dissolution of the “I”notion is the spiritual progress.

For Self-Realization, it is necessary to know the Self as transcendent of bodily form & limitation.  By liberating oneself from the ignorant Mis-identification with the Body & its “attributes” (characteristics), one remains as the Infinite & the Eternal. Those who understand that they seek a Realization that is not a bodily state, & who are neither enamored of nor ashamed of the Body (either way is Attachment), seek to discern the Self’s freedom from the Body & its “attributes”.  One should know the Self’s transcendence of all bodily definition. The results of this Knowledge of the Self’s Freedom from the limitations of the Body & its attributes are Bliss & Peace that are undisturbed by bodily conditions, spiritual Freedom from birth, growth, decay, illness, & death, & transcendence of action.

Knowledge is identical with the Existence known, without any notion, assumption, or supposition. If the Ego-“I” assumed, we so not know about Knowledge & Existence. If the Ego-“I” is no longer assumed, we no longer know about a World.  We may seem to know about the World from the ideas that correspond to the sensory impressions to our feelings & perspectives about that “World”.  Then wet do not know about the Supreme Self.

The “I”-notion, defined as a “thinker”, a “perceiver”, , etc., is implicit in every thought. Sri Ramana Maharshi has given the instruction to inquire: “For whom is this thought ?” If pursued, that Inquiry dissolves the entire objective portion of thought, without which the thought cannot stand, & all is returned to the True “I”.

One should regard as Real & as one’s true Existence only That which has no beginning or end, which is everexistent, which is continuous & Undivided, which is Unchanging, which is transcendent of all that has Form, of all that changes, & of all that is in Time.  By this Knowledge, one abides in the Natural State, which is the only true state of the Self.  The Self may be said to call unto Itself, as the Sought & the seeker, as the Guru & the disciple, as God & the devotee.  It seeks itself as Meditation.  The Self reveals Itself as inner experience. It knows & “abides” in itself for Blissful eternity. May this blissful, Immortal Knowledge shine clearly.

It is seemingly in the very nature of Pure Existence that: if we do not know ourselves, we seem to fall into Illusion. The Illusion is characterized by apparent “mortality”. If we are to be free of that “mortality”, which runs contrary to our nature, we must seek to be absorbed into Something that is Eternal.  Nothing else can be Eternal but this very Pure Existence itself which is Absolute.  If we take refuge there though, the first thing that will “die” is the Ego“I”notion which is the false sense of Individuality. It will be the first to “die” because it will die before the Body perishes.  It will be the first to die because such is the focus for the one who is truly seeking absorption on the Self, the one who is seeking to know the Self.  Methodologies here include “jnana” or Knowledge, & also “bhakti“, Devotion & “Surrender” to the Divine.  There is really no distinction, & so we need not overly divide between Knowledge & Devotion.

Sri Ramana Maharshi revealed in his Non-Dual Teachings, which are most direct & immediate, that if the Self remains undefined, it is only Brahman.  That alone exits. Therefore, one should know the Self.  The Knowledge of Reality, which is the Realization of the Self & the Realization of the Absolute, is attained by the direct path of True Knowledge.  By liberating oneself from the Misidentification with what is not the Self, one knows the Self.  When the real nature of what has been considered as the non-self is seen, it invariably proves to be nonexistent, for it was dependent upon Misidentification in order to even ever appear.  Blissful & Eternal is the Real Self.

Sri Ramana has indicated that firm Selfabsorption is to be free of that differentiating which appears only through Imagination of a separate Identity apart from real Existence. Firmly remain as That.  Put an end to the Imagination through Self-Inquiry, & do not start imagining again. When, through Knowledge of your Self, you see how self-evident the nature of your Existence is, the possibility of such Imagination has ended.

Firm  Selfabsorption is being still in the deepest sense, & no action is implied. Pure Knowledge is implied, but this is Knowledge that is identical with Pure Existence. This Knowledge is not a mental knowledge, because how could mental knowledge grasp the Absolute ?  Whenever we have the idea of action with the idea “I do”, whether in a gross form with the Body or with the Senses, or in a subtle form with the Mind, the Individual “I” is always in there, & that “I” is always unquestioned. Self-Knowledge is the questioning of that very Individual “I”.

In Self-Realization, all mere notions about the Absolute & the Self are relinquished. Notions about the Absolute are such as that: It is separate from oneself, or objective, or that it is not always present.  Notions about the Self are such as that it is endowed with Form, minuteness, that it is changeful, material, embodied, all defined by thought, in Time, or endowed with Individuality. For Knowledge, the superimposition of the jiva-hood (concept of Individuality) is removed from Atman (the Self) & Isvara-hood (idea of the Lord, of God) is removed from Brahman. Upon such removal of superimposition, or Ignorance, one realizes the identity, as declared in the Upanishad, Tat Tvam Asi, “That Thou Art”.

It is in the very nature of thought to move & to change.  Sri Ramana Maharshi has revealed firm Selfabidance or “absorption”. This is the Knowledge that truly recalls one’s Existence as it is. Therefore, again & again, Self-Inquire to determine what your True Nature is, what your Identity is, what your actual Existence is. Dwelling as that Pure Existence, without the superimposition of any idea & without any Misidentification, that is the Self–”abidance” referred to.

When Sri Ramana Maharshi says: “remember the Self”, it is a “remembrance” but not a remembrance in the usual sense of “memory”. It is a recalling of a direct Knowledge that you actually always had about your Existence, which you always were. In this way we reclaim the Bliss that was actually never lost. Nothing new is attained, but something that did not actually come to be, that is “lost” Ignorance. It is almost as if he is saying: “Remember that you exist.”

One Formless Existence appears as if all this Multiplicity. All the Multiplicity is only the one formless Existence imagined as such. To realize the Truth, for the Truth to be Self-revealed, one should abandon Ignorance, Multiplicity, the transitory, & the Illusion of Form, & thus be absorbed (“abide”) as the Formless, which is real, Non-Dual & ever-existent. This “abidance” is Knowledge. The destruction of Illusion means the destruction of Ignorance regarding the Self, or the destruction of Misidentification. Such is the destruction of suffering & the “death” of death. This is blissful Immortality. It is simply the vanquishing of Ignorance. By the Truth being revealed within, Misidentifications, or superimpositions, are destroyed. By the destruction of Misidentifications or super impositions, Absolute Truth is revealed within.

By Self-Inquiry, you must arrive at that continuous experience of your Identity as being the Self, without a trace of Mis–identification. That Mis–identification is the consideration of yourself to be somehow mixed with what is actually not the Self.  Eliminating Mis–identification is the “remembrance” of your Existence. Realizing your Self just as it is, you see quite clearly that you have been That always, & in the profoundest sense, that you have always known That.  [Otherwise you may not have so much treasured your existence.]

The Individual, being nothing, knew nothing. His ignorance was not real, & Knowledge was not for him. Knowledge is inherent in the Self.  It is the most interior & formless Knowledge & not a thought-produced knowledge. This is not a matter of thinking: “I am the Self” for no matter how much one would think something, it would not be stable.

The Knowledge of the Self is the Knowledge of the Eternal, the Unchanging, & the completely blissful.  It is the Knowledge of Reality. This is the only true “perception”. To see anything else is to “see” the non–existent. That is Ignorance. Ignorance is composed of assumptions & super–impositions. Ignorance is the non–perception of Reality & the mis–perception of Reality, displaying itself as the non–seeing of Real, Non-Dual Existence & the hallucination of Duality or Multiplicity. The “knowing” of anything, be it gross or subtle, without the Knowledge of the Self, is simply diversified Ignorance, or diversified Illusion. In the Knowledge of the Reality of the Self, there remains neither Multiplicity (or Duality) nor anything else. One Formless Existence has no differentiation whatsoever.

Since the Truth of the Self cannot be conceived or remembered, what is it that constitutes Self-Realization ?  What is it that constitutes the “remembrance” of the Self, the recollection of one’s actual True Nature ?  It cannot be a matter of thought. Sri Ramana Maharshi speaks of “Atmanistha“, which means Self“abidance” or “absorption”. It signifies the establishment of your very Identity in That as That, & in That as That alone, without the addition of anything added to it.  What is this “abidance” ?  It cannot be just the movement of some mental attention, some variety of thought, or some form of concentration. It must be something much deeper & more interior, something not subject to changefulness, & something that does not waver. Firm “abidance” or “absorption” is that which does not change as the Body changes or as the Mind changes. Therefore Self-Inquiry & the resultant Knowledge are of a thought-transcendent nature. Self-Inquiry & Knowledge are of the same nature as Pure Existence, which is devoid of thought.

The Realization of the Self is blissful Immortality. It is absorption in & as That which has no beginning or end. The Desires for Happiness & Immortality are the same. They come from the same intuition of the Truth of the Self. Only absorption in the Self, which is the Reality, fulfills both. The Self is that which has no beginning or end & is Real, or truly existent. The Self is changeless. Whatever has a beginning, a change, & an end is unreal. This “being unreal” may be understood as being utterly nonexistent or as the existent but entirely misperceived. To experience blissful Immortality, one must realize the Existence of the Self as it really is; one must “abide” as the Beginningless & Endless, as the Changeless.

The “I” truly is Pure Existence & not at all the assumed “I”-notion or Ego-entity. It is not quite right when a person says that he focuses on the “I”-thought & sees the “I”-thought. It is unclear what he is actually focusing on or what he is seeing, since an “I”-thought has never actually been born. If we really focus, if we inquire into the nature of the “I”notion, we discover that there is no “I”notion, there is no Individual.  There is just the “I”-less true “I” which is the real Self.  So the only way to “remember” the Self is by firm absorption therein.

All wish to continue to exist forever. This is an intuition of the True Nature of Pure Existence. This desire to exist cannot be fulfilled externally in bodily forms.  When the state of Pure Existence is unrealized & Delusion is present, that Pure Existence manifests as desire for anything to last.  Realized, the Self itself is the Unborn & the Undying, remaining in the state of imperturbable Peace, completely detached & not dependent on anything.  The Self is transcendent of the entire Universe for all Time. The desire to endure springs from the deepest inner core & is fulfilled solely by realizing the deepest Reality. That is the eternal Existence of the Self. Immortality is complete Happiness, for the essence of both Immortality & complete Happiness is the same.  Such is only that which is unending & complete.  The temporary is not complete & suffering is not Eternal.

When Sri Ramana Maharshi posed the question regarding how we can remember the Self he urged us to go deeper into what is signified when we are told to “remember” the Self.  We are to go deeper than misidentification with an Individual Ego “I”.  In fact, all thought is objective & pertains to the “I”. The “I” is implicit in every thought & is integral to it. Without the notion of “I”, however it is defined whether as a “perceiver”, as a “conceiver”, as an “experiencer”, as a “rememberer”, as a “thinker”.  How else can there be any false notions such as: “this thought exists” or “the object of this thought exists”. The entire Illusion of differentiation in the truly Undifferentiated Consciousness is utterly dependent upon this 1st assumption of “I”.  Without the “I”-notion, there is no such differentiation.  Self-Inquiry reveals that the “I”-notion has not yet been born.

Absorption in & as the Self is Knowledge of the Self.  Self-Inquiry into the Knowledge of Immortality reveals that Bliss & Immortality are the same & that both are realizable by Knowledge. As a result of comprehending this Teaching if Non-Duality, one is liberated from the illusory connection to the Body & to what is mortal. The fusion of the Desire for Happiness & the desire to exist results in one being endowed with a singular focus upon Self-Realization. This enables one to practice Self-Inquiry to know the Self with the power of undistracted meditation. Fullness & Perfection, the unceasing Bliss, reside in That (Absolute) which neither rises nor sets, which neither begins nor ceases. The experience of Happiness is connected with the experience of Eternity, & the Desire for Happiness is connected with the Desire for Eternity.  No one desires a Happiness that will cease, but, rather a Happiness that will not cease & lasts forever. One wishes to exist forever so as to experience that Happiness forever. The Desire for Immortality is as strong as the Desire for Happiness. The 2 are inextricably woven together. Just as no one wishes to be unhappy, so no one wishes to cease to exist.  One may wish unwanted objective appearances, such as the sensations, the body, and thoughts, to cease.  But those aside no one really wishes to cease to exist.

Sri Ramana Maharshi taught that we should “remember” our One Existence. Instructed to remember our own True Nature, how are you going to do that ?   Being “immeasurable”, how are we going to determine it ?  The Self is inconceivable, so how are we going to think of it ?   It is far too Formless & Limitless to be retained in memory. Since It is Infinite, we cannot stand outside It or apart from It to think of It. All wise Sages give the instruction to meditate on the Self, contemplate the Self, think of the Self, & remember the Self.

The Self is the source of Happiness. Nothing else is the Source. The Self is Bliss. The experience of the Self is determined by Knowledge. No other factors are involved. Seeing this is the dawn of Knowledge. To conceive otherwise is Delusion.  Objects, circumstances & events, sensations, & Time are not factors determining the Desire, the Source, & the Experience of Happiness. The Self, which is alone the Source, is always present. Self-Knowledge is the sole factor determining Bliss. Therefore, the search for Happiness is actually a search for the Self. The Self is the Source of Happiness, the “place” in which Happiness occurs, & the nature of the experience of Happiness. The Self is always present. Self-Knowledge is its revelation & not its creation. The Knowledge of the Self is the blissful Knowledge of Reality. Bliss is Existence, which is ever-existent, since Existence itself can never cease to exist. Bliss is, therefore, always present, & all that is required is to know its existence within oneself. All that is required for permanent, profound Happiness is to know the nature of that Existence.

We cannot “think” of that Undivided, Absolute One Existence.  We cannot stand apart from It to think about It.  When we think about something we think about some “thing”.  There is an objective portion of our thought.  But how could there be an objectless thought ? The object need not be gross [physical].  It can be a subtle [mental, prana“astral”] object, such as an abstract idea, but there is always an objective portion of the thought, without which, the thought is not a thought at all.

To set the experience of Happiness free of limitation, the experiencer himself must be free of limitation, that is, free of misidentification with Form. Then, one remains in infinite, unending, intense Bliss, which is so intense that even the memory of suffering & sorrow is erased. All the superimposed forms are of a sensory or mental character. The experience of Happiness is not a sensation like as seeing or hearing. Happiness is not a thought or a collection of thoughts. Happiness is of a formless nature, shining at the same depth from which the Desire for Happiness springs, at the very source of Happiness itself. The Source of the Desire & the Source of the experience of Happiness are one & the same. That Source is within. Unrealized, the Source manifests as the Desire for Happiness. Realized, the Source shines as Bliss itself. Realization means Knowledge. Knowledge is direct experience of the Self.  Such is remaining at & as the very source of Happiness.
