Sri Ramana upheld the view that the notion of Individuality is only the “I”–thought manifesting itself in different ways. Instead of regarding the different activities of the Mind (such as Ego, Intellect, & Memory) as separate functions he preferred to view them all as different forms of the “I”–thought.  Since he equated Individuality with the Mind & the Mind with the “I”–thought it follows that the disappearance of the sense of Individuality (i.e. Self-Realization) implies the disappearance of both the Mind & the “I”–thought.

This is confirmed by his frequent statements to the effect that after Self-Realisation there is no Thinker of thoughts, no Performer of actions, & no Awareness of Individual existence.

That which is does not even say “I am”.  Does any doubt rise: “I am not” ? Only in such a case should one be reminding oneself: “I am a man.”  One does not. On the other hand, if a doubt arises whether he is a cow or a buffalo he has to remind himself that he is not a cow, etc., but “I am a man.”  This would never happen.  Similarly with one’s own Existence & Realization.

A jnani’s vibrations stay even after he leaves the Body. All people leave vibrations in the places they have been & lived.  Jnanis leave a good vibration & bad people leave a bad vibration.  I am not talking about a gross physical phenomenon that everyone can feel. The vibration that ajnani leaves is subtle.  Radio broadcasts can only be heard if one has a radio that is tuned to the right frequency. You tune into a jnani’s vibrations by having a quiet, still Mind.  This is the “wavelength” of the broadcast.  If you have not tuned  yourself to receive this frequency, you cannot expect to experience or benefit from the vibrations that a jnani may have left in a place.

Before embarking on a description of the technique of Self-Inquiry itself it will be necessary to explain Sri Ramana’s views on the nature of the Mind since the aim of Self-Inquiry is to discover, by direct experience, that the mind is non-existent. According to Sri Ramana, every conscious activity of the mind or body revolves around the tacit assumption that there is an “I” who is doing something. The common factor in “I think, I remember, ‘I am acting” is the “I” who assumes that it is responsible for all these activities.  Sri Ramana called this common factor the ‘I’-thought (aham-vritti).  Literally aham-vritti means “mental modification of I”.  The Self or real “I” never imagines that it is doing or thinking anything; the “I” that imagines all this is a mental fiction & so it is called a mental modification of the Self.  Since this is a rather cumbersome translation of aham-vritti it is usually translated as “I”–thought.

Does God come and tell you that He has placed you in difficulties ?  It is you who say so.  It is again the wrong “I”.  If that disappears there will be no one to say that God created this or that.

The jnani is not really aware of the Body.  Or if he is, he feels it like akasha, Space itself.

After one of the operations to remove the tumor on Bhagavan’s arm had been completed, I was worried enough to send a girl who worked for me to the Ashram to ask how Bhagavan was.   could not go myself because Bhagavan had asked me not to visit him.  When this girl told Bhagavan why she had come, he started laughing very loudly. I interpreted this to mean that nothing had really happened. His laughter was a message to me that Bhagavan was not his Body & that I should therefore not be upset or worried by anything that happened to it.

Years before, I was walking on the Hill with Bhagavan when he remarked, ” don’t feel the weight of the body at all.  I feel as if I am walking weightlessly through the sky.”   I sometimes have the same feeling when I am walking around.

Self-Knowledge is the way to destroy Ignorance & all its attendant Bondage & Suffering.  Self-Knowledge is the destruction, or transcendence, of the Dualism of Ignorance, & Self-Knowledge is the elimination of multiple states of Consciousness.  That is, Self-Knowledge reveals Consciousness as Pure as it is, free of differences & Duality.

The World, Individual, & God are all conceptions of the Ego–“I”.  They arise only after the advent of the “I”–thought.  Did you think of them in your Deep Dreamless Sleep ?  You existed in Deep Dreamless Sleep & he same you are now speaking.  If they be real should they not be in your Deep Dreamless Sleep also ?  They are only dependent upon the “I”–thought.  Again does the World tell you: “I am the World” ?  Does the Body say “I am Body” ?  You say, “This is the World”, “this is Body” & so on.  So these are only your conceptions.  Find out who you are & there will be an end of all your doubts.

Until the River reaches the Ocean, it is obliged to keep on flowing, but when it arrives at the Ocean, it becomes Ocean & the flow stops. The water of the River originally came from the Ocean. As it flows, it is merely making its way back to its Source. When you meditate or do sadhana, you are flowing back to the Source from which you came. After you have reached that Source, you discover that everything  that exists –  World, Guru, Mind – is one.  No differences or distinctions arise there.

Bhagavan often used to say: “The physical Guru is outside, telling you what to do & pushing you into the Self.  The inner Guru, the Self within, simultaneously pulls you towards itself.”  Once you have become established in the inner Guru, the Self, the distinction between Guru & disciple disappears.  In that state you no longer need the help of any Guru. You are That, the Self.

If one sees the only surface, one assumes a limited “I”.  If one assumes a limited “I”, one attaches oneself to superficial forms.  If one pursues to the Core, one finds the limitless “I”.  If one looks from the limitless Self, one is free & Peace.

The Ignorance is identical with the “I”-thought.   Find its source & it will vanish.  The “I”-thought is like a spirit which, although not palpable, rises up automatically with the Body, flourishes & disappears with it.  The Body-consciousness is the wrong “I”.   Give up this Body–consciousness.  It is done by seeking the source “I”.   The Body does not say “I am”.  It is you who say, “I am the Body !”   Find out who this “I” is.  Seeking its Source & it (“I”) will vanish.

The Guru guides you & tells you that what you have done is not enough.  If you are filling a bucket with water, you can always add more if there is still space.  But when it is completely full, full to overflowing, it is pointless to add even a single drop. You may think that you have done enough, & you may believe that your bucket is full, but the Guru is in a better position to see that there is still a space, & that more water needs to be added.  Don’t rely on your own judgment in this matter.  The state you have reached may seem to be complete & final, but if the Guru says, “You need more sadhana,” trust him & carry on with your efforts.

The real “I”, or the Self, is free, happy within, & forever unblemished Perfection.  The Self always abides, is Formless, & is non-dependent on any Form, gross or subtle, the Body or the Mind.  Self-Realization is abidance as the “I”–less “I”.  Self-Inquiry is the pursuit of Identity, of “I”, to its core.

In fact it is already realized; there is nothing more to be realized.  Otherwise, the Realization will be new; it has not existed so far, it must take place hereafter. What is born will also die.  If Realization be not Eternal it is not worth having. Therefore what we seek is not that which must happen afresh.  It is only that which is Eternal but not now known due to obstructions; it is That we seek.  All that we need do is to remove the obstruction.  That which is Eternal is not known to be so because of Ignorance.  Ignorance is the obstruction.  Get over this Ignorance & all will be well.

You have to make an enormous effort to realize the Self.  It is very easy to stop on the way & fall back into Ignorance.  At any moment you can fall back. You have to make a strong determined effort to remain on the peak when you first reach it, but eventually a time will come when you are fully established in the Self.  When that happens, you cannot fall. You have reached your destination & no further efforts are required.  Until that moment comes, constant sadhana is required.

Self-Inquiry should determine the not–truly “I” (in the Absolute sense – Atman).  The “I” (in the false sense – Ego) itself depends on Delusions of Form in order to appear, for it has no Form of its own.

“I” exist always – Here & Now. Who says it: “the ‘I’ is not felt” ?  Does the real “I” say it or the false “I” ?   Examine this.  You will find it is the wrong “I”.  The wrong “I” is the obstruction.  It has to be removed in order that the true “I” may not be hidden.  The feeling that: “I have not realized” is the obstruction to Realization.

By strength of practice, by doing this Self-Inquiry sadhana, the Veil will be removed completely. There will be no further hindrances. You can go to the top of Arunachala, but if you are not alert, if you are not paying attention, you may slip & end up at Isanya Math [a Hindu institution at the base of the Hill].

The “I”–notion, which is the cause of Bondage & Suffering, comes & goes.  The “I”–notion is always associated with Form, gross or subtle.  All Form is transient & actually un-Real.

You need not eliminate the wrong “I”.  How can “I” eliminate itself ?

–  All that you need do is to find out its Origin & abide there.  Your efforts can extend only thus far.  Then the Beyond will take care of itself.  You are helpless there.  No effort can reach it.

A lamp that is lit may blow out if the wind is strong. If you want to see it again, you  have to relight it.  But Self is not like this.  It is not a flame that can be blown out by the passing winds of thoughts & desires. It is always bright, always shining, always there.  If you  are not aware of it, it means that you have put a curtain or a veil in front of it that blocks your view.  Self does not hide itself behind a curtain. You are the one who puts the curtain there by believing  in ideas that are not true. If the curtain parts and then closes again, it means that you are still believing in wrong ideas.  If you have eradicated them completely, they will not reappear.  While these ideas are covering up the Self, you still need to do constant sadhana.  The Self does not need to stabilize itself. It is full & complete in itself. The Mind can be stabilized or destabilized, but not the Self.

The supposed other self of “I”, is called “Ego”, “Mind”, “Individual”, “Soul”, etc.  Ramana Maharshi refers to it as the “I”–thought, “I”–notion, “I”–mode, or “Aham Vritti“.  If “I” is apparently modified into, or defined as, something it is not, the resultant view is the “I”–notion or Ego.  Though the Self is Formless Existence & Infinite Consciousness, in Ignorance there arises the conception, the idea of “I”, of Individuality.  This is the “I”–thought or Aham Vritti.  This is not the production of another “I”.  It is only an assumption that proves to be false upon Self-Inquiry.  Finding it, unreality is the true significance of  “Ego–death”.

The “I” is always there – in Deep Dreamless Sleep, in Dream & in Wakefulness. The one in Deep Dreamless Sleep is the same as that who now speaks.  There is always the feeling of “I”.  Otherwise, do you deny your Existence ?  You do not. You say “I am”.  Find out who is.

Don’t be afraid of the Mind. It’s a false tiger, not a real one. Something that is not real cannot harm you. Fear & anxiety may come to you if you believe that there is a real tiger in your vicinity. Someone may be making tiger noises as a joke to make you afraid, but when he reveals himself, all your fears go because you suddenly understand that there never was a tiger outside your imagination.

One should perceive that there is an un-modified Absolute Self & then practice Self-Inquiry to realize such as one’s true Identity.  There is only one Real Self, whether called the “Supreme Self”, the “True Self”, the “Absolute”, or just simply “the Self”. It is unmodified Existence.

[Sri Ramana]

How do you meditate ?

“I begin to ask myself  ‘Who am I ?”, eliminate Body as not ‘I’, the breath as not ‘I’, the Mind as not ‘I’ & I am not able to proceed further.”

Well, that is so far as the Intellect goes.  Your process is only intellectual.  Indeed, all the Scriptures mention the process only to guide the seeker to know the Truth. The Truth cannot be directly pointed out.  Hence this intellectual process.  You see, the one who eliminates all the “not I” cannot eliminate the “I”.  To say “I am not this” or “I am that” there must be the “I”.  This “I” is only the Ego or the “I”–thought.  After the rising up of this “I”–thought, all other thoughts arise.  The “I”–thought is therefore the root-thought.  If the root is pulled out all others are at the same time uprooted.  Therefore seek the root “I”, question yourself: “Who am I ?”; find out its Source.  Then all these will vanish and the pure Self will remain ever.

Consciousness alone exists. That is to say, whatever exists is consciousness alone. Keep this in mind & don’t allow yourself to regard anything else as being Real.  If you fail and give even a little reality to the Mind, it will become your own false reality. Once this initial wrong identification – “I am the Mind, the Mind is real’ – has happened, problems & suffering will follow.

By Self-Knowledge one finds that one is not a limited, individual self, nor are there 2 “I’s” in the same being.  All the limitations are entirely based on the concept of an “Individual”, or Ego–“I”, as one’s identity.  One should see the “I” as pervading the limitation, as the root of the limitation, as being falsely strengthened by adherence to the limitation, as the thread running through the core of the limitation, & as the thread of all limitations together into pseudo-self.  The vicious cycle of limitations so conceived & the Ego from Samsara.

Is there anyone who is not aware of himself ?  Each one knows, but yet does not know, the Self – a strange paradox.

This Discrimination is only for the purpose of elimination of the un-real from one’s experience.  The Discrimination is neither an end in itself nor a destruction of anything actually real.  Between the Real & the  un-real there is no division, since the Real is That which alone exists & the un-real does not exist at all.  Self-Inquiry involves the Discernment of what is truly the Self & the cessation of the confounding of it with what is un-natural, or not really “I”.

In practice, it is the dissolution of belief in false definitions attributed to one’s identity.  Such definitions yield the Delusion of the self being distinct from the Absolute, the Delusion of one’s identity being a separate Individual or Ego-entity.  The relinquishment of these false definitions, or Mis-identifications is essential in knowing the Self.

Know the doubter.   If the doubter is held, the doubts will not arise.  Here the doubter is transcendent.   Again when the doubter ceases to exist, there will be no doubts arising.  From where will they arise ?   All are jnanis, jivanmuktas.  Only they are not aware of the fact.   Doubts must be uprooted.  This means that the doubter must be uprooted.  Here the doubter is the Mind.

You know that you know nothing.  Find out that knowledge.  That is liberation (mukti).

The Substratum upon which the false idea of the Mind has been super–imposed is the Self.  When you see the Mind, the Self, the underlying Substratum, is not seen.  It is hidden by a false but persistent idea.  And conversely, when the Self is seen, there is no Mind.

Freedom from delusion is the Natural State.  Delusion consists of the confusion regarding the Self & the not-Self.  It is a case of Mis-identification.  It is confusion regarding Existence & and Object, including the Body, or and Idea, or between Consciousness & a thought, or notion.  It is confusion regarding the always & the temporary.  It is non–Discrimination of the Real & the un-Real.  Realization is Freedom from Delusion & not a new attainment or acquisition,  Freedom is realized by perceiving that the Delusion is but a thin veneer of assumptions that can be dissolved because they are false, unreal, & only conceptual, & are not realities.  The Self is always free & unaffected by any Illusion.  Self-Inquiry unto one’s True Nature yields Self-Abidance in this Natural, Real State.

All are aware of their own Self only.  Many take what is not as what is, or they see the phenomena apart from the Self.  Only so long as there is the knower is there knowledge of all kinds ( direct, inferential, intellectual etc. ); should the knower vanish they all vanish together with him; their validity is of the same degree as his.

You know that you know nothing.  Find out that knowledge.  That is liberation (mukti).

Bhagavan &  many other teachers kept bringing up the analogy of the Snake & the Rope.  If you mistake a Rope on the ground for a Snake, the Snake only exists as an idea in your  Mind. That idea might cause you a lot of worry &  anxiety, & you may waste a lot of mental energy wondering how to avoid the Snake or kill it, but this fact remains: there is no Snake outside your imagination. When you see the rope, the substratum upon which your false idea of a Snake is super–imposed, the idea that there is a Snake, & that it is real, instantly vanishes.  It is not a real Snake that has disappeared. The only thing that has disappeared is an erroneous idea.

What does not exist always, what is not always, such is not one’s Natural State (sahaja), because it is not actually one’s essential Existence.  What does not exist always ?  Material things & the World, the Body, Sense Perceptions, Thoughts, & the Ego.  All these are transient.

(regarding occult powers)

They are all the same, hearing & seeing.  Whether one hears from near or far does not make any difference in hearing.  The fundamental factor is the Hearer, the Subject. Without the Hearer or the Seer, there can be no hearing or seeing.  The latter (hearing or seeing) are the functions of the Mind.  The occult powers (siddhis) are therefore only in the Mind.  They are not natural to the Self.  That which is not natural, but acquired, cannot be permanent, & is not worth striving for.  They denote extended powers. A man is possessed of limited powers & is miserable.  He wants to expand his powers so that he may be happy.  But consider if it will be so.  If with limited perceptions one is miserable, with extended Perceptions the misery must increase proportionately.  Occult powers will not bring Happiness to anyone, but will make him all the more miserable.  Moreover what are these powers for ?  The would-be occultist (siddha) desires to display the siddhis so that others may appreciate him.  He seeks appreciation, & if it is not forthcoming he will not be happy.  There must be others to appreciate him.  He may even find another possessor of higher powers.  That will cause jealousy & breed unhappiness. The higher occultist (siddha) may meet a still higher siddha & so on until there will come one who will blow up everything in a trice.  Such is the highest adept (siddha) & He is God or the Self.  Which is the real power ?  Is it to increase prosperity or bring about inner Peace ?  That which results in Peace is the highest perfection (siddhi).

Your mind is an insubstantial shadow that will follow you around wherever you go. Attempts to eliminate or control it cannot succeed while there is still a belief that the mind is real, and that it is something that can be controlled by physical or mental activity.

After lining it up in, this way, he started throwing soil  on the shadow  in an attempt to bury it. Of course, no matter how much soil he put in the  hole, the shadow still remained on top of it.

It’s like when a small boy who runs down the street, trying to catch up with the head of his shadow. He never manages because no matter how fast he runs, the shadow of his head is always a few feet ahead of him.  An onlooker suggested: “Put your hand on your head.”  When the boy followed this instruction, the shadow hand caught up with the shadow head.  But you can’t control or eliminate a shadow by chasing it or by putting a shadow hand on it.

Consciousness, without which anything appended to Consciousness, is the Natural State (sahaja) of the Self.   Of all one’s Ideas & Perceptions, which of them can be said to actually be one’s True Nature ?  Though one may regard the clearer more spiritual Concepts & Perceptions as closer than cloudier ones, the clearest Concepts & Perceptions, being mere reflections of something beyond, none of them are actually the Consciousness itself.  Consciousness, which is of the nature of the Self, transcends all Concepts & Perceptions.  It is just so & always so.  Therefore to abide in the Natural State of the Self, to know the ever–present nature of  Existence & Consciousness, practice Self-Inquiry to know what is ever–present without a break for all Time.

[Sri Ramana:]

The Self alone is the Reality; the World & the rest of it are not.  The realized being does not see the World as different from himself.  The Sage’s Realization leads to the uplift of humanity without the latter being aware of it. The help is imperceptible but is still there. A Sage helps the whole of humanity, unknown to the latter.

The Senses, though, do not know of themselves.  The Senses are in themselves as inert as the sensed objects.  No Sense Object exists apart from the Senses.  All is within the Senses. Your Senses are not traveling “out there” to perceive Objects.  The Objects are conjured up within the Sensory experience.  The sensing experience is conceived in the Mind.  Sensing is under the Mind’s power.  The Mind must be in a certain state in order to create the Senses within it.

[Sri Ramana:]

Solitude is a function of the Mind. A man attached to Desire cannot get solitude wherever he may be.  A detached man is always in solitude.

One might be engaged in work & be free from Desire & keep up solitude.  Work performed with Attachment is a shackle, whereas work performed with Detachment does not affect the Doer.  He is, even while working, in solitude.

Without the Hearer there cannot be hearing.  Without the Seer there cannot be vision. The Subject & Object appear only after the Mind has arisen. The Mind comprises them.

Who was it that slept ?  You did not say in your sleep that you slept.  You say it now in your Wakeful state.  The Ego therefore is the same in Wakefulness, Dream, & Sleep.  Find out the underlying Reality behind these States.  That is the Reality underlying these.  In that State there is Existence alone.  There is no you, nor I, nor he; no Present, nor Past, nor Future.  That State is beyond Time & Space, beyond expression.  It is ever there.

[when asked how long did it take for Ramana to realize the Self]

This question is asked because the Name & Form are perceived.  These are the perceptions consequent on the identification of the Ego with the gross Body.  If the Ego identifies itself with the subtle Mind, as in Dream, the perceptions are subtle also.  But in Deep Dreamless Sleep there are no perceptions.  Was there not the Ego still ?  Unless it was, there cannot be the memory of having slept.

The practice is a constant search for “I”, the source of the Ego.  Find out “Who am I ?” The pure “I” is the Reality, the Absolute Existence-Consciousness-Bliss. When That is forgotten, all miseries crop up; when that is held fast, the miseries do not affect the person.

To whom is the Illusion ?  Find it out. Then Illusion will vanish. Generally people want to know about Illusion & do not examine to whom it is.  Illusion is outside & unknown. But the seeker is considered to be known & is inside.  Find out what is immediate, intimate, instead of trying to find out what is distant & unknown.

The World exists nowhere but in your Mind.  So, where are you ?  If the World is in your Mind, you cannot be in the World.  Where are you ?  Any place & anything that appear in the World, which exists only in your Mind, cannot be your abode.  The limitations of the World exist only in the Mind.  Those limitations in Space, Time, & such, cannot be yours.  So say those who have examined their experience & have come to know the Truth.  If the World is only in your Mind, to what should you become attached ?  When you are attached to something in this World, it is only one part of the Mind becoming attached to another part of the Mind.

[Sri Ramana:]

Work is not an obstruction to Self-Realization. For a realized being the Self alone is the Reality, & actions are only phenomenal, not affecting the Self. Even when he acts he has no sense of being an agent.  His actions are only involuntary & he remains a Witness to them without any Attachment.  There is no aim for this action.  Even one who is still practicing the path of Wisdom (jnana) can practice while engaged in work.  It may be difficult in the earlier stages for a beginner, but after some practice it will soon be effective and the work will not be found a hindrance to Meditation.

[Sri Ramana:]

Concentration of the Mind is in a way common to both Knowledge (jnana) & Yoga (asthanga).  Yoga aims at union of the individual with the Universal, the Reality. This Reality cannot be new. It must exist even now, & it does exist. Therefore the Path of Knowledge tries to find out how viyoga (separation) came about.  The separation is from Reality only.

We cannot truly say Sensing “of it”, but just “Sensing”, because we do not know the “it” but only just the Sensing.  Something shines so that the Senses seem to be active. Something makes the Senses appear.  What is it ?  According to the mode of the Mind, so is the mode of the Senses &, therefore, the corresponding Objects.  We see this very vividly & markedly in the contrast between the & Dreaming states.  A Waking state of Mind has a Waking set of Senses, & a Dreaming state of Mind is endowed with a Dreaming state of Senses.  From the vantage point of the Waking state, we know that the Dreaming senses are entirely just the Dreaming Mind.  We should see the Waking Senses in the same way.  The Waking Senses apparently perceive a Waking World.  The Dreaming Senses apparently see a Dream World.

[Sri Ramana:]

What is Time ?  Time is only an idea. There is only the Reality.  Whatever you think it is, it looks like that. If you call it Time, it is Time.  If you call it Existence, it is Existence, & so on.  After calling it Time, you divide it into days & nights, months, years, hours, minutes, etc.  Time is immaterial for the Path of Knowledge (jnana).

Sound is given as an example by Sri Ramana & implies the entire series of Senses.  The Maharshi says that Sound & others compose the entire World.  Consider meditatively: what do you know of the World ?  Do you know anything but the 5 Senses – Seeing, Hearing, Touching, & the rest ?  In the Mind, these together form a picture.  You refer to that as “the World”, & it appears as if external to the Senses, when, actually, it is composed of the Senses. We may understand this by considering the Senses in terms of the experience of Sensing, rather than the particular Sense Organs, such as the Eyes, Ears, Skin, etc.  All that you know of the World is the Sensing of it.

[Sri Ramana:]

The only Reality (Brahman) is the Self from where the Ego appears, & runs through thoughts which manifest themselves as the Universe and in which the mothers & fathers, friends, & relatives appear & disappear.  They are nothing but manifestations of the Self so that one’s parents are not outside the Self.  So there is no reason to mourn. Learn it, realize it, & be happy.

One Reality is the Self from whom has sprung the Ego which contains within itself the seeds of predispositions (karmic vasanas) acquired in previous births. The Self illumines the Ego, the predispositions & also the gross Senses.  Thereupon, the predispositions appear to the Senses to have materialized as the Universe, & become perceptible to the Ego, the reflection of the Self.  The Ego identifies itself with the Body, & so loses sight of the Self.  The result of this inadvertence is dark Ignorance & the suffering of the present life.

Even is one’s Existence is not known as it is, it is still present.  When one realizes the Self, one sees that it is not a new state, but is That which is ever-existent.  Only now, the imagined Bondage & the Illusion characterized by suffering are no more.

Self-Inquiry is a finding out what is true about one’s True Nature, one’s actual Existence,  In Non-Duality, that which causes one to suffer, which are the false notions in his own Mind, are regarded as un-natural, not inherent in oneself, but something one falsely attributes to himself,  One who suffers is one who believes these false notions to be true.

What remains when these false notions to be true.  What remains when these false notions are no more is what is natural, & what is natural is something actually present all the time.  Self-Inquiry is a precise means of knowing that Natural State (sahaja).

The Waking State is like a cinema-show.  There is the light on the screen & the shadows flitting across impress the audience as the enactment of some piece.  Similarly also will it be, if in the same play an audience also is shown. The Seer, the Seen, will then only be the screen. Apply it to yourself. You are the screen, the Self has created the Ego, the Ego has its accretions of thoughts which are displayed as the World, the trees, plants, etc., of which you are asking.  In Reality, all these are nothing but the Self.  If you see the Self, the same will be found to be all, everywhere & always. Nothing but the Self exists.  Even the thought, “I do not realize” is a hindrance.  In fact, the Self alone is.

The Natural State of the Self is Freedom, & bondage is unnatural.  It is deep Happiness, or Bliss, that does not depend on a cause, but is one with pure Existence, experienced directly when it is not overshadowed by the false notions of Ignorance.  The Self in its Natural State, is free from all thoughts & all objects.  This Self-Realization itself is effortless.  There is no struggle to maintain it, for it is free of Duality.  Self-Realization is not a becoming of anything in addition to the real Existence of the Self.

There is no harm in the case that you fall asleep.  If it is a “blank”, pursue Self-Inquiry: “For whom is the blank ?  Find out.  You cannot deny yourself at any time. The Self is ever there & continues in all States. Watchfulness is the Waking State.  Therefore the State will not be one of Deep Sleep, but rather “sleepless sleep“.  If you go the way of your thoughts, you will be carried away by them & you will find yourself in an endless maze.  Go back to tracing the source of thoughts.  In that way, the thoughts will disappear & the Self alone will remain.

Self-Realization is something intrinsic (inwardly essential) to oneself, of the very nature one’s Existence.  Even if not known as it is, one’s Existence is still present.  When one realizes the Self, on sees that it is not a new state, but that which is ever-existent.  But the imagined bondage & the illusions characterized by suffering are no more.  Then, the Natural State of the Self is not something that comes & goes, but is always present.  In the Natural State (sahaja) one knows oneself as one truly is & does not mis-identify with what is passing, be it the Body, the Senses, or the ideas & states of the Mind.  In Reality, which is ever existent, one finds real Peace.

Did you not exist in Deep Sleep ?  Did you know then that you were asleep or unaware of the World ?  It is only in the Waking State that you describe the experience of Deep Sleep as being unawareness.  Therefore Consciousness when asleep is the same as that when awake.  If you know what this Waking Consciousness is, you will know the consciousness which Witnesses all the 3 States (Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep). Such Consciousness could be found by seeking Consciousness as it was in Deep Sleep.

Self-Realization has to do with one’s very Existence, one’s Consciousness.  Self-Realization is deeply knowing one’s Existence–Consciousness in the most profound way, in the much the same way all know that “they exist.”  How is Self-Realization attained ?  Such is not just due to the experiences of one’s Sense experiences or one’s passing thoughts.  How does one know all this & what is one’s Existence ?  The Real State of the Self is innate.  Self-Realization is not something to be externally attained or acquired.

Aids for realization include the Teachings of the Scriptures & of realized Sages.  Teachings, discussions, discourses, & meditations are only secondary aids, whereas the essential is the Guru’s Grace.

Even the desire to know how long will it take for one to get Self-Realization is an obstacle. The Self is ever there, there is nothing without it. Be the Self & the desires & doubts will disappear. Such Self is the Witness in Deep Sleep, Dream, & Waking State of existence. These States belong to the Ego. The Self transcends even the Ego.

Obstacles that hinder Realization of the Self are habits of mind (vasanas). Overcome the mental habits (vasanas) by realizing the Self.

It is the Ego which raises such difficulties, creating obstacles & then suffering from the perplexity of apparent paradoxes.  Find out who makes the Self-Inquiry & the Self will be found.

With Self-Inquiry within as to:“Who am I ?” one’s aim should be to liberate oneself from Mis-identifications & know the Self as it is.  One should be in search of the very Existence–Consciousness that one really always is, even if it seems apparently veiled.  With each sensation or thought that arises, whether it pertains to the World, the Body, or the Mind, one should ask oneself: “For whom is it ?”  The inner answer will naturally be: “Is is for me.”  Having this abandoned the objective outlook & thus endowed with a truly inward-turned Mind, one should then as: “Who am I ?”  Whatever objective definition seems to be there, cast it off as not “I” with the Self-Inquiry: “Who am I ?”

[Sri Ramana]

On the subject of Grace, it has been said that: “A salt doll diving into the sea will not be protected by a waterproof coat.”  The Body is the waterproof coat.

On the subject of preventing the Mind from being distracted, you see the objects on forgetting your own Self.  If you keep hold of your Self, you will not see the objective World.

A child & a Sage (Jnani) are similar in a way.  Incidents interest a child only so long as they last.  It ceases to think of them after they have passed away.  So then, it is apparent that they do not leave any impression on the child & it is not affected by them mentally. So it is with a Sage.

Find out what is knowledge. That is Liberation (mukti).

All these views concisely mentioned above are dependent upon one’s view of the Self.  The degree of Ignorance or Knowledge regarding the Self determines the experience of all these.  Therefore one ought to meditate by Self-Inquiry to determine one’s True Nature.

If a man thinks that his Happiness is due to external causes & his possessions, it is reasonable to conclude that his Happiness must increase with the increase of possessions & diminish in proportion to their diminution. Therefore if he is devoid of possessions, his Happiness should be nil.  hat is the real experience of man ?  Does it conform to this view ?  In Deep Sleep the man is devoid of possessions, including his own Body.  Instead of being unhappy he is quite happy.  Everyone desires to sleep soundly.  The conclusion is that Happiness is inherent in man & is not due to external causes.  One must realize his Self in order to open the store of unalloyed Happiness.

That which is ever existent is alone regarded as Real.  The very ideal of “all else” vanishes due to Self-Inquiry to know Reality, the Self.  The Self alone is Real, always.  There are no parts to Reality.  Reality is indivisible or Non-Dual.  The World is only That (Reality), the Self is only That, & the Absolute is of course always That.  There are not 3, but only That which never becomes other than its own nature.  This known as the Unborn & as the Truth of No-Creation (ajata vata).

If you make your outlook that of wisdom, you will find the World to be God. Without knowing the Supreme Spirit (Brahman), how will you find His all-pervasiveness ?

Whatever state one is in, the perceptions partake of that State (Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep). The explanation is that in the Waking State (jagrat) the gross Body perceives gross names & forms.

In the Dream State (swapna) the mental body perceives the mental creations in their manifold forms & names.

In Deep Dreamless Sleep (sushupti), the identification with the Body being lost, there are no Perceptions

The Supreme is seen as one part of the reality, but it has left its spark, or something of itself, in the Individuals & the World.  In Qualified Non-Duality, the World is regarded as real, as a projection of the Supreme, as a dream of God, as a creation of the Mind, as the Mind’s play, as the energy of Consciousness, or as something similar to these.  The determination of reality is still with the Senses & the Mind, & the objective aspect is regarded as existent, yet in nature, more subtle than matter.  Therefore the Absolute or Self is regarded as only one part of reality, & not the only reality.

In Duality view has the determination of reality is the Senses & the mental cognition of the same.  In Duality, God is regarded as one part of reality, & the Individuals, the World, & God seem as 3 distinct things.  In Qualified Duality, the World is regarded as real & created, but it is the splendor, or manifestation, of the Supreme.  Some part of the Supreme manifests its presence on the World in various ways (love, etc.).  The World may viewed as God’s eternal play (lila) or as something that is temporarily “arising”.  The determination of reality is still the Senses & the Mind.

What one regards as real is, or becomes, one’s experience.  According to the degree of Duality or Non-Duality, what is regarded as real will be different.  In all cases, there must be a breaking of attachment to the things of the World, but the depth reached thereafter is different. In Un-Qualified Duality, the World is regarded as real.

It is the creation of the Supreme God, unless one is an atheist, in which case “creation” is an accident of matter, but such would not be any spiritual view at all.  The World is regarded as external, one seems to dwell on it, & the Supreme seems elsewhere.
