REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY – PT 140

One can know Absolute Being, or Brahman, only by being identical with Brahman.  He cannot know That if it is different from himself.  The Self, being Non-Dual Consciousness, cannot know an “other”.  The Self, being the sole-existent Consciousness, cannot be known by another.  The Self alone can know itself.  There would be no use for the countless descriptions of the Absolute by the Scriptures & the holy Sages, & no use for the negation of all limited definitions, if That, the Self, were other than one’s own Self.  What purpose would be served by speaking of something that could never be experienced at all ?  The negation of attributes & limited definitions of Brahman, as given in such spiritual instructions, must be understood to be the negation of attributes and limited definitions of the Self. If they are to be applied to oneself, they involve the negation of superimposition upon the Self of what is not the Self.

The jnani appreciates the distinctions referring to sound, taste, form, smell, etc. , but he always perceives & experiences the One Reality in all of them.  That is why he has no preferences.  Whether he moves about, or talks, or acts, it is all the One Reality in which he acts or moves or talks.  He sees nothing as apart from the One Supreme Truth.

The definition of oneself as an Individual, as an embodied being, is false.

Consciousness is selfluminous.  By its Light all appear. When all disappear, Consciousness is still the same. The Known has no Light of its own.  By Self-Inquiry one should trace this Light inward to realize that which is perpetually illuminating. That ever-shining, colorless Light illumines the Senses & the Mind, but can never be seen by the senses or envisioned by the Mind.  Knowledge, or direct experience, of this Light consists of identity with it. Changeless, blemishless, ever free, immovable, eternal, bodiless, & imperishable, without Ignorance or Knowledge, the Self is of the Nature of Consciousness alone. Being, the Self, is the sole, ever-existent, Non-Dual Reality.

[Ramana]

The Self-Realized jnani sees perceptual differences, but only as appearances. He sees them as not separate from the True & the Real with which he is one.  Equality is the true sign of jnana.  The very term “equality” implies the existence of differences.  Equality is a unity that the jnani perceives in all differences.  Equality does not mean ignorance of distinctions.  When you have Self-Realization you can see that these differences are very superficial, that they are not at all substantial or permanent, & what is essential in all these appearances is the one Real Truth.

The Self alone is capable of knowing itself  & in truth there is no “other” to do so.  The essential practice of Self-Knowledge, for this Self-Realization, consists of Knowledge, which in practical application takes the form of the Self-Inquiry summed up in the phrase “Who am I ?”

One who knows himself truly knows, “I am without a Body” & “I am not engaged in any bodily activity”, “I am without the Senses”, & “I am not engaged in any sensing.”  “I do not have speech, & I do not speak. I do not have Life-Energy (Prana), & I neither live nor die. I do not have a Mind, & I never think.  I am not an “I”, or an Individual being, & there is nothing I become.”

Such a Sage need not “think” all the above statements in so many words.  It is so, & expression has merely been given to such here to indicate that which is actually indescribable & of the nature of Silent Knowledge.  Since the Eternal Self is always of the nature of Consciousness, it is ever without Ignorance.  Similarly, the Self is without knowledge conceived as a state or mode of Mind.  The Self  has no states or phases, and, therefore, is beyond both ignorance and knowledge. The only true Knowledge is the Self, itself.

[Ramana]

There is an illustration for the Illusion or superimposition involving 2 friends who fell sleep side by side. One of them dreamt that both of them had gone on a long journey & that they had had strange experiences. On waking up he recapitulated them & asked his friend if it was not so. The other one simply ridiculed him saying that it was only his Dream & could not affect the other.  So it is with the un–Self-Realized ajnani who superimposes his Illusory ideas on others.

We have never actually experienced sensing. We have experienced only the state of Mind that composes those Senses.  All of that has just been in the Mind. The entire objective scene, even if thought to be external & even the thought “that it is external,” is also part of this instrument of the Mind. Who sees the Mind is the Self, formless, without instrument, without form, without shape, without definition, & without a Seer, without difference, absolutely One, perfectly Full, & Limitless. There is no “space” for anything else, other, or outside. There is no division, such as the Seer & the Seen. Only he who knows himself as he really is knows what the seen is.  Otherwise, one merely thinks of what one sees.

There is no Knower other than the Self.  This is the all-comprehensive Knower, which is the Absolute Consciousness itself, ever-free, homogeneous, Non-Dual & Space-like, & which is realized when the illusory objective aspect has been negated. The Knower can never be the Known.  As all that is Known is subject to destruction, but the essence of the Knower can never not exist.

[Ramana]

Since the un–Self-Realized ajnani, though he is not really the Doer, imagines himself to be the Doer & considers the actions of the Body to be his own actions.  He thinks the Self-Realized jnani to be similarly acting when the Body is  active.  But the Self-Realized jnani himself knows the Truth & is not confused.  The state of a Self-Realized jnani cannot be determined by the ajnani & therefore the question troubles only the ajnani & never arises for the jnani.   If one is a Doer he must determine the nature of the actions. The Self cannot be the Doer.  Find out who is the Doer [said to be the Body, is contrarywise   God    depending on the perspective taken up] & the Self is revealed.

The Form of the Seen depends upon the instrument used to perceive that Form.  Instruments could include telescopes & microscopes, & also the Senses & the Mind.  The Mind is composed of its concepts, & the Senses are limited by the Sense organs.  The Senses are actually just the instruments of the Mind, they are just a particular form of thought.  Any Form seen will correspond to the instruments of the Seer.  A change of those instruments will change the Form of the Seen.  The Form of the Seen is likewise dependent entirely upon the Form of the Seer perceiving through those instruments.  Therefore, we have not seen or experienced anything but the Form of those instruments.  That is, we experience the Forms of our Senses.  We experience the Forms of our mind.  We have never experienced anything sensed; we have just experienced the sensing.

That which is objective, inclusive of the Ego, can have no knowing power, for all that is objective is not Consciousness itself & is unreal. The objective & unreal cannot know themselves, cannot know each other, & cannot know the Knower.  The sole Knower is the Self, which is the unknown Knower of all that is known.  Though the Knower cannot be known objectively, thr Knower is nonetheless known in Self-Knowledge.  Such Knowledge is devoid of the triads of Knower-Knowing-Known.  It is this true Knower of the Knowledge that is referred to in the Upanishad aphorism, “Tat tvam asi (That Thou Art) & not anything else.  Anything else would be a mere superimposition on the Real Self & would have no such Knowledge.

[Ramana]

An unSelf-Realized ajnani sees someone as a Self-Realized jnani & identifies him with the Body.  Because he does not know the Self & mistakes his Body for the Self, he extends the same mistake to the state of the Self-Realized jnani.  The Self-Realized jnani is therefore considered to be the physical frame.

One must have a Form to “see” Forms.  Even if the Form is as vague as “there” or as some “thing”; something “inward”  or “outward”, there must be some “seer” of that Form.  But if one is Formless, then what happens to a Form like “there” ?  Whether we regard “there” in terms of the Universe, or in terms of God, if they lose their Form, what actually exists” ?  Continue Self-Inquiry into Pure Existence & see if Pure Existence has a Form.  See if the existence you know as your own has a Form.  To know the Seer, remove what is objectively known from that Seer.  Determine whether the Seer has a Form.

Mistaking the mind for the Self is like mistaking the reflection in the mirror to actually be one’s face. Mistaking the body for the Self is taking a corpse to be alive and holding it dear and is the cause of suffering. Mistaking the ego to be the Self is like believing as fact the mythological story of someone who was never born. Misidentification is the cause of confusion. Self-Knowledge is abidance with no false identification with the ego, mind, and body. The Self alone knows.

[Ramana]

Any amount of action can actually be performed, & performed quite well, by the Self-Realized jnani, without his identifying himself with it in any way or ever imagining that he is the doer.  Some power acts through his Body & uses his Body to get the work done.

Realizing NonDual Liberation, Enlightenment by Self-Inquiry pt133

Self-Inquiry avoids the pitfall of one not looking at oneself.  It avoids the error of thinking this is an objective topic & an existence apart from oneself. What Form does that “self” have ?  If we say, “The Self is there,” “God is there,” “The World is there,” or “The Universe is there,” then what is the “there” ?  What actually exists ?  In the context of the forms of those things, by which we would differentiate them one from another, what is it that we see ?  What actually is there ?  To know that & thus to know what actually exists, we must cast away from the Knower whatever definition or form seems to be appended to him. The way is always inward & not outward.  Therefore, regarding the World, etc., Sri Ramana poses the question, “If the Self is formless, who is to see ?”

Delusion is the mistaking of oneself for all those “attributes” which are objective.  Such Delusion veils the Blissful experience of the Self.  One cannot have simultaneously the ideas, “I am this, I am like this, or I do” & the Knowledge of being the Self.  Therefore, one ought to inquire so that one becomes free of such ideas.  This involves the cessation of Mis-identification with the Body & the Mind.  Since Existence is not the Body or the Mind, one never does anything.  Similarly, Existence is never this or like this, but only Existence.  Ignorance makes one believe that the Mind, which is illumined by the Light of Consciousness, is the Self.  The Mind’s apparent power of knowing is only Reflected Light.  It is like seeing Sunlight reflect off a shiny object & thinking that the light actually belongs to that object.

[Ramana]
