Reality 126

The supposedly knowing Mind & the Universe known are both imagined.  Existence-Knowledge, which is Being-Consciousness, alone is Real.  It exists without anything else.  It alone is both the Knower & the known, but the forms of such are imagined.  Difference, which manifests only in the Mind of the Waking & Dream States, is unreal.  Non-Dual Consciousness alone exists.

The ancient Sages gave their spiritual instruction in Silence & with the Teachings revealing how “That you are (Tat tvam asi).”  Inquiry into this instruction removes all the ideas of what is not the Self from the Self, like the proverbial negation of the Snake from the Rope.  This negation is never of a Reality, but of false assumptions, or superimposition.  lf real things were negated, Liberation would be transitory or not at all, for how would it be possible for something truly existent to go out of existence or for something to change its nature ?  The inquiry & negation eliminate Ignorance, Illusion, only.  All that is objective, as well as the Ego, are negated by the Inquiry summed up as “not this, not this” revealing Being, which is Consciousness, the one Self.

The Ego is ignorantly assumed to be the Self &, thus, the knower. The conceptions of the Mind determine if one is endowed with wrong knowledge, doubtful knowledge, or true Knowledge. With mis-identification, there is wrong knowledge.  That is, what is regarded as Knowledge is actually Ignorance.

Thus, there is self-caused delusion about Happiness, Identity, & Reality. With spiritual practice, there is doubtful knowledge.  That is, there is actual knowledge of Happiness, Identity, & Reality, but such is not steady.  It is either a conviction, but without direct experience, or it is a conviction fused with experience, but not steady because of the need to destroy the remaining tendency to misidentify.  True Knowledge is that state in which Knowledge is invariable & in which knowing & Being are one & the same.  At all times, the same Consciousness is the only Knower, but it appears as an Ego, a dissolving Ego, or as purely Ego–less, just as a clear crystal appears as if endowed with different colors or as transparent according to the proximity of different colored things or the absence of them.  In Truth, all such states & their content are known by the Self, have their apparent existence by the Self, which is free from them & depends on no thought whatsoever to know itself, & “all such states” do not exist apart from the Self, though the Self itself can never be other than the Knowledge, Being, itself.

Reality 125

If the Self would change states, such as states of Ignorance & Knowledge, of Bondage & Liberation, it would be destructible, & Liberation, itself, would be artificial or unreal.  Liberation is not a change of state from one into another.  It is  not reasonable to imagine a separation & union in relation to the Self, for both would be transitory.  The transient cannot be attributed to the Eternal, just as the unreal cannot be attributed to the Real, or the dual to the Non-Dual.  As there truly can be neither union nor separation, Liberation cannot consist of the Individual entering into Brahman or Brahman coming to the Individual.

The true nature of the Self is never destroyed, is changeless, is uncaused, & cannot be obtained or lost.   The new appearance or coming into being of any state would be the effect of a precedent cause &, thus, changeful, transitory, & not self-existent; such cannot be permanent Liberation.  Self-

Knowledge alone is Liberation. Knowing the Self to be oneself is the greatest attainment.  To wrongly assume the non-Self to be the Self is ignorance.  The removal of the superimposed mis-conceptions, of what the Self is alone, constitutes the path to Liberation.  No other view is reasonable, as such always involves some dualism, some belief in an existent Individual experiencer & a self-existent objective thing, & the conception that the Reality becomes other than what it is & the unreal actually comes to be.

Liberation cannot be a change of condition, because such involves mutability & thus destructibility, parts or divisions, & a change in nature.  Any belief that superimposition occurs on nonexistence, that Illusion can actually create itself or that there is no Absolute Self should be abandoned because the existence of Being, itself, is irrefutable, & it is not reasonable that something could come from nothing. Superimposition occurs on some real thing, & there is the one who knows this Ignorance. It is Ignorance of what, & for who is it ?  If one so inquires, one finds that Being is, Consciousness is.

Reality 124

Difference, & change belong to the Senses & the Mind. The Self is undivided & without modifications. Whatever is subject to change is limited.  The Self is limitless.  Knowledge through the Senses & the Mind changes & ceases.  Real Knowledge of the Self is ceaseless & never other than Being itself.  This Knowledge is as limitless & invariable as Being itself.  Just as all other thoughts are merely objective Perceptions, so is the Ego, which is not the Self & not a possession or attribute of the Self.  One should discriminate what is the Body, the Senses, the Mind, or “I” notion, or the aggregate of such, & inquire, “Who am I ?”.

One should give up the Identity that appears in the Waking State of Mind & also the belief of reality in the Waking State itself.  Likewise, one should not identify with what is of the Dream State, in which the Mind functions in a similar objective fashion.  One must know himself as beyond that which is of Deep Sleep, which is a state of Causal Merger.  The Self is the Witness of all states, is pure Consciousness, & is not an object of knowledge.  It is the unknown knower.  Though Consciousness cannot be known as an object, it, being formless & without duality, Consciousness can never be made distant from oneself.  Therefore, the Self, of the nature of Consciousness, is always known as one’s Own Nature. Consciousness is self-effulgent & does not require any other knowledge to know itself other than that which is its Own Nature, just as a light does not need another light in order to be seen, but is seen because of its own light.

The Self is the only knower, & nothing else is so.  It never comes into existence, for it eternally exists, & is without cause & effect.  The Self & Self-Knowledge are not effects of anything.  Just as the manifested & the un-manifested are 2 states superimposed upon the Self so, too, are Bondage & Liberation.  As there is no day or night for the Sun itself so there is neither Knowledge nor Ignorance for the Self.  Realizing the Self as having no connection with anything ever, one is himself the Truth of the Unborn, the Truth of No-creation, & is never born again & is never in Illusion again.

If one is immersed in Samsara, the repetitive cycle of Illusion, Births & Deaths, filled with Suffering, then the way to liberate himself is by Knowledge. Liberation, which is the goal of spiritual practice, is one’s own if, inquiring to know the Self, he discards all notions of “me” & “mine,” attains complete certitude in the Space-like nature of Reality, & abides devoid of physical & mental forms & the assumption of an Ego-entity.

Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

Observing Life & Death, those who desire to be free of Death should seek the immortality of the Self, using that same desire be free of Death to find Liberation. Find clarity regarding the desire to endure, & thus turn this innate desire into the desire for Self-Realization. This Realization alone can fulfill that innate desire. Those who perceive mortality, feel the urge to find something that does not die. They recognize that everything in the World is perishable. Therefore what they seek must be found within in a way that transcends what is physical. They see that it is futile to be attached to that which is only going to pass away sooner or later, so seek spirituality for immortality. This immortality is to be found in the Self. Abidance as the Self is Knowledge of the Self.  An Inquiry into the knowledge of Immortality reveals that Bliss & Immortality are the same & that both are realizable by Knowledge.

Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

The negation of attributes & limited definitions of Brahman, as given un such spiritual instructions, must be understood to be the negation of attributes & limited definitions of the Self.  If the instructions are to be applied to oneself, those instructions involve the negation of superimpositions, of what is not the Self, upon the Self.

The descriptions of the Self & the negation of attributes & limited definitions of the Self would be meaningless if they referred to some sort of other “Self” different from the aspirant’s own self.  Such negations would further clarify that the Self is bodiless, non-sensory, without prana (“life force or energy”), free from thought, etc.

There are not 2 selves in the same one being (apparent person or human being).  There is 1 Self, & when known as it is, the Self is known to be Infinite & Eternal, not a limited individual being, but just Non-Dual Being.

To realize this, the Knowledge of oneself as the Self, free from the Body & such, this Knowledge must become as certain & steady as the belief of a human being that he is a human being. No human being doubts this on any occasion.

When that human being determines by Self-Knowledge what, in Truth, that Existence is, that Being exists, then Absolute Being is known. And if that Knowledge is without doubt & without wavering, one has thus known what needs to be known, has experienced what needs to be experienced, & has realized what needs to be realized.

Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

Consciousness is self-luminous. By the light of Consciousness, all appears.  When Consciousness disappears, Consciousness is still the same.  The known has no light of its own. Inquiring, one should trace the Light inward to realize that which is perpetually illuminating.  That ever-shining colorless Light illumines the Senses & the Mind, but can never be seen by the Senses, or envisioned by the Mind.  Knowledge, or direct experience of this Light consists of the Identity with that Light.  Changeless, blemishless, ever-free, immovable, eternal, bodiless & imperishable, without Ignorance or Knowledge, the Self is of the nature of Consciousness alone.

Existence, the Self, is the sole, ever-enduring, Non-Dual Reality.  The aspirant can know Absolute Being or Brahman, only if the aspirant is identical with Brahman. The aspirant cannot know That if That (Brahman) is different from the aspirant. The Self, being Non-Dual Consciousness, cannot know anything or anyone other than Consciousness.  The Self, being the sole-existent Consciousness, cannot be known by another.  The Self alone can know itself.

There would be no use for the countless descriptions of the Absolute by the Scriptures & the holy Sages if That, the Self, were other than one’s own Self. There would also be no use for the negation of all limited definitions if That, the Self, were other than one’s own Self.  For what purpose would be served by speaking of something that was never experienced by those Sages, those authors of the Scriptures, something could never be experienced by all ?

Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

The Self alone knows.  The which is objective, inclusive of the Ego, can have no knowing power.  For all that is objective is not Consciousness itself & is therefore unreal.  The objective & unreal cannot know themselves, cannot know each other, & cannot know the Knower.  The only Knower is the Self which the unknown Know of all that is known.  Though it cannot be known objectively, the Self is nonetheless known in Self-Knowledge devoid of the triads of knowing-knower-known, by the Self itself, which is the Self of the Sages who truly know.

The Self is the true Knower of Knowledge that is referred to in the Upanishad aphorism, tat tvam asi “Thou art That” & not anything else.  Anything else would be a mere superimposition on the real Self & would have no such Knowledge.  There is no other Knower. This is the all-comprehensive Knower, which is Absolute Consciousness itself, ever-free, homogenous, Non-Dual, & space-like.

This Knower is realized when the illusory objective aspect has been negated. The Knower can never be the known.  All that is known is subject to destruction, but the essence of the Knower can never cease ti exist.

For Realization of the immortal Bliss of eternal Being, one should know oneself as the Knower alone, which is unalloyed, boundless Consciousness. In knowing the Self truly, one knows that Consciousness is never non-existent & never alters its nature.  Consciousness is never an experiencer, never a thinker, never a sensory perceiver, never a performer of action, or an individualized knower since Consciousness is without an Ego.

Thus, one who knows himself truly, knows, “I am without a Body, & I am not engaged in bodily action. I am without Senses, & I am not engaged in any sensing. I do not have speech; & I do not speak. I do not have prana; & I neither live nor die. I do not have a Mind; & I never think. I am not an “I”, or an individual being & there is nothing I become.”

Such a Sage need not think that this is so.  It is so, & expression have merely been given to these truths to indicate that which actually ineffable & of the nature of silent Knowledge. Since the eternal Self is always of the nature of Consciousness, it is ever without Ignorance.  Similarly, the Self is without knowledge conceived as a state or mode of Mind.  The Self has no states or phases, & therefore, is beyond both Ignorance & Knowledge. The only true Knowledge is the Self, itself.

Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

One should meditate on being the Witness & not anything witnessed, whether the witnessed be a known Conception or a known Perception.  The entire personal orientation should be utterly abandoned. The Identity & the Reality should be known as the Witness. And all that is witnessed should be known as not the Self & as unreal.  The meditator should discriminate more & more finely between the Knower & the Known. Thereby mis-identification ceases. Thereby superimposition of the Known upon the Knower ceases.  When the Witness alone remains as one’s Identity, & as Reality, all that there is pure Consciousness which is real Being.  It is an “I”–less “I” with nothing else whatsoever.  Until the Self is realized firmly, one should discriminate between & cease to mis-identify, inquiring with as “Who am I ?”

Knowledge is “Abidance” (in & as the Self) free from any identification with the Body, the Mind, & the Ego.  Delusion is the mistaking of oneself for the Body, the Mind, & the Ego, all of which are objective.  Such Delusion veils the Blissful experience of the Self.  One cannot have simultaneously the ideas” “I am this, I am like this, or I do this or that” & at the same time have the Knowledge of being the Self.  There one ought to persist in Self-Inquiry so that one becomes free of such ideas.  This involves the cessation mis-identification with the Body & the Mind.  Since Being is not the Body or the Mind, one never does anything. Similarly, Being is never “this” or “like this”, but is only Being.

Ignorance makes one believe that the Mind, which is illumined by Consciousness, is the Self.  The Mind’s apparent power of knowing is only the “reflected light” of Consciousness.  This is like seeing sunlight play upon a shiny object & thinking that the light seen actually originates from the illumined object.  Mistaking the Mind for the Self is like mistaking the reflection in a mirror to actually be one’s actual face.  Mistaking the Body for the Self is taking a corpse to be alive & holding it dear, & this is the cause of Suffering. Mistaking the Ego to be the Self is like believing, as fact, the mythological story or someone who was never born.  Mis-identification is the cause of confusion. Self-Knowledge is “Self-Abidance” with no false identification with the Ego, Mind, & Body.

Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

Liberation is by Knowledge alone & Knowledge is neither sensory nor conceptual in nature. The Self that is realized by such Knowledge has neither Inner nor Outer, but is ever-existent, omnipresent, indivisible, & ineffable.

The true nature of the individual self is actually Brahman.  There is only one Self, whether imagined to be individualized, or else realized as it truly is.  If one inquires into this apparently individualized self, all that one finds is the Self, which is Brahman.  All that is thought to make oneself different from the Self can be relinquished by the Self-Inquiry that negates mis-identification, which is the questioning “Who am I ?”  For this reason the Upanshads instruct neti, neti “not this, not this”.

Immortal Liberation is freedom from destruction & fear.  The Individual seems as if subject to both destruction & fear. In truth, the Existence that seems to be an Individual is only Brahman.  Self-Inquiry negates all that is thought to make the Self differentiated into individuals.

Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

In relation to all, the Self is the Witness, & being such is attributeless.  The Witness is That which never changes, but which knows all the changes –  thoughts, modes, & states – of all Minds.  The Witness knows all the functions of the Mind in Waking & Dream.  In the absence of the Mind’s functions, that is without those 2 states of Waking & Dream, what remains of the Witness is pure Consciousness, which is omnipresent & immutable.  This the Self, the true “I” which is free from Ignorance & has no attributeness, no functions, & no qualities, & which is transcendent of all 3 States (waking, dream, deep dreamless sleep).  Space-like & never tainted by any of the defects or limitations of the beings that Consciousness indwells, Consciousness alone is the Self.

The Self is free from all notions, forms, & actions.  The Self is always 1 – without – a –  2^nd.  Adi Shankara proclaims that, as long as there is no Self-Knowledge, the identification with the Body & such, & the belief in the authenticity of Sense-Perceptions continue, just as Dreams appear to be true as long as one does not wake up.  To spiritually wake up, one must know the Self truly.  The Reality of the Self is pure Consciousness with no Duality & with nothing else existing whatsoever.  One cannot have simultaneously the Knowledge of the Self along with the idea of oneself as the performer of activity, or an experiencer.  For steady unalloyed Knowledge, one should cease such mis-identification.

In the Waking State, one experiences the Interior & the Exterior, what is sensed & what is thought.  In the Dream State, the situation is the same.  Both what is sensed & what is thought in both States are not the Self & are unreal. The contents of both what is sensed & what is thought in both Waking & Dream states should not be regarded as defining the Self.  When what is sensed & what is thought are falsely associated with the Self, this is superimposition.  No activity of the Exterior & the Interior yields Liberation. The activity of an un-real superimposition cannot yield eternal, real Liberation from that un-reality.

Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

All the efforts involving mis-identification within the Mind & all the superimposition of experience upon the Self produces only Illusion & not anything real.  The Illusion is that of limitation by Form; the Illusion of being a Body, or at a location; the Illusion of perishability; the Illusion of the belief that something destructive of Bliss can exist; the Illusion of differentiation or division into parts, & of connection with actions & their results. The Self is actually all–pervading & space-like, imperishable. The Self is the eternal Bliss itself, Siva, un-differentiated & un-divided, partless, actionless, & free of all  karma.

The infinite Self is only one, & nothing other than the Self can belong to the Self.  Therefore the Mind cannot belong to the Self. The Self is ever unattached & cannot belong to anything else.  Therefore the Self is unaffected by anything done by the Mind.  When attachment is present, even as the notion of possession, the possessor, as it were is possessed by the possession.  Since the Self is unattached to all, including the Mind, the Self is possessed by none & is not affected by any.  If one becomes detached from all things & to one’s own thoughts in the Mind, he finds that what he has reached was the real Self all along.  Since there cannot exist a Mind that is something other than the Self which is Infinite & Non-Dual, the Mind cannot have, in Reality, any activity or its results.

Freedom from the Mind is freedom from the fear of loss of Happiness & from the fear of ceasing to exist. This Freedom from desires & the grief of concomitant with desires.  Thus, one who knows the Self, free from the Mind, is truly happy. & is solely That which is the same in all beings.

All beings are, by nature, pure Consciousness.  Apparent difference from this Consciousness is only illusory appearance due to Ignorance.  The illusory difference is removed by comprehending the Knowledge that one is solely Being.  Such Knowledge alone is the means to realize immortality, for Being never ceases to be.  Nothing else can yield this Realization, for Consciousness is identical with Being.  Knowledge is of the nature of Consciousness itself, & there really exists nothing but Being, which is Knowledge or Consciousness.

Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

The unknown Knower of all that is known, the Supreme Knowledge itself, Consciousness remains undivided by the triad of Knower, Knowing, & Known. Consciousness can never be a known or unknown object. Consciousness is the Witness of all, the only Knower. Consciousness, the Knower, is never defined by the Known. Consciousness, the Witness of every state, of all thought, is not defined by thought, nor contained in any state. The Witness is never known. Consciousness is ever non-objective. Consciousness is formless – with nothing objective within or without. Unknown, Consciousness alone is known. Not a process of knowing, Consciousness alone is knowing. Not a knower, Consciousness alone is the Knower, the unknown Knower of all that is known.

The Mind & its modifications, in the form of thoughts, modes, & states, are limited.  The Self, unlike any of the Minds, is not of limited knowledge, for Supreme Knowledge is the Self’s true nature.  That  Supreme Knowledge is unmodified Consciousness itself, which is the Self itself.  The Self has no Ignorance, just as light has no darkness.  The Self is also without change, without impurity, ever beyond conception, forever beyond the Senses, & never of a material nature.

The Self is, by analogy, said by the Wise, to be like sunlight, while the Mind is like a crystal. And the various Experiences are like the colors seen in the crystal. The significance of this analogy is that all objects are seen in the Mind only by the light of the Self.  Objects of knowledge, sensed or mental, appear only in the Waking & Dream states. When these Waking & Dream states are not present, no such sensed or mental objects are experienced. Yet the Knower (the Self) is always the Knower, never ceasing, unlike all that is unreal. For the Knower is formless Consciousness. Duality appears only in those Waking & Dream states & is thus likewise unreal. For what is Real must be Real always. By relinquishing the superimposition of the known on the Knower, one then abides as the Non-Dual Knower, unceasing Consciousness, always.

Prior to the discrimination of the Self & the non-Self, one may think that the Absolute does not exist. One may doubt that the Self alone exists. After such discriminating Self-Inquiry, what was thought of as an Individual self is known to be only Brahman. There is no Individual self, or Mind, which would have done such thinking. Upon such Self-Inquiry, the experiential Knowledge is that only the Self. Brahman is, & the Individual & Mind are only Brahman & nothing else.

For the Self, which is of the nature of pure Consciousness, the connection to any objective experience, mental or sensed, is a product of delusion.  The “I” is truly free of all attributes, & is not associated with any quality or entity, & is ever non–objective.  The Ignorance that imagines otherwise is purposeless.  That Ignorance merely creates Bondage among the ever-free, Suffering in the midst of Bliss. This is like drowning in a mirage whose “waters” serve no purpose. If the delusive attempts, to connect the Self with what is not the Self, are given up, the Mind rests in Brahman, the Absolute Self, “as if free from Bondage”, say the Sages.  In Reality, that Self was never bound.  The Self is ever Unborn & ever free of Duality.

Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

All the objects of knowledge change. All that are described as “mine” & Ego, also cannot illumine themselves, nor can they illumine each other.  The Self is different from all that are described as “mine” & Ego. The Self is the unchanging, illuminating Consciousness.  This Consciousness is truly one’s only Identity.  Therefore, there can never truly be Bondage.

One Non-Dual Self alone is.  The one Non-Dual Self is the undivided Consciousness. This is the only Knower in all.  There are not different kinds of Knowers, such as higher & lower knowers. The Minds of all are pervaded by the one Consciousness within, which is the Self.  This is the “I” of all.  So there is no one else who knows, or who does not know.  The “I” is truly the Absolute, Brahman, all-knowing & all-pervading.

This “I” pervades & illumines the Mind. An the Mind pervades & illumines all things ever experienced.  Thus this “I” is the illuminator & pervader of all. This Self is the Witness of all objects of the Mind. These mental objects are subtle thoughts & also all the objects conceived as external as well. This includes being the Witness of all other Minds conceived as existing within the Mind.  Thus the Self is the Witness of all.

The Mind cannot conceive the Self, yet the Mind has no existence apart from the Self. The Self can neither be accepted, nor rejected by any of the Minds. That which cannot be accepted or rejected by the Mind is Brahman. That is truly the “I”.  Brahman & the Self are One.

Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

Just as the Mind becomes the Object, the Instrument or means of Knowing, the Actor, the Action, & the results in a Dream, so is this also the case in the Waking state. The Real Self is different from the Mind & all those things that the Mind becomes (object, instrument of knowing, actor, action, results). The Self is without interior & exterior, such as the Mind & the World.  The Self is homogenous Consciousness.  Know the Self by ceasing the attribution of anything exterior or interior to the Self.  Remembrance & forgetfulness, including remembrance & forgetfulness of the Self, these processes are also, only of the Mind.  Both of these processes are products of Ignorance & do not touch the Self. Cease to regard the Self as a known or unknown object.  If the Supreme Self is regarded as an object of knowledge, such is a superimposition of Imagination or Ignorance.  True Knowledge prevails when such Ignorance, or superimposition, is negated. This is like the case with the rope & the illusion of the snake.

When the conceptions of “me” & “mine” are attributed to the Self, such are manifestations of Ignorance.  They are superimpositions upon the Self, which is only One, with neither Individuality nor any experience or thing possessed by an Individual. The “individual self” is thought to be the Seer, Hearer, Thinker, Knower, & such. In Reality, it is Brahman, the imperishable, indivisible, Non-Dual Self.  The “individual self” or “I” is not different from the Real Self, which is Brahman.

Meditation on the Self is declared to be without Time, Space, direction, or Causation, since the Self is without these things. The Self itself is to be realized as timeless, & the Realization itself, being of the same nature, is bodiless & without regard to place. The Self itself is, without Causation, being Uncreated & Unborn. And the Realization, being of the same nature, need not wait for circumstance & is not an attempt to produce the Self anew. The Realization is a realizing of what the Self truly is.  Le the Mind thus turn within, immersing itself in Self-Inquiry, absorbing itself in Knowledge, thereby losing its own form as it searches inwardly for its source. In this lies great Bliss & Immortality.

The Self has neither rise  nor set, is neither in darkness nor illumined, but is always the spiritual Light, with nothing material or mental in its nature at all. The distinction between the Self & oneself is due only to superimposition, which is like imagining different openings in a castle wall, for instance, to be different spaces, rather than perceiving the castle space itself. The Self is non-dual, 1 – without – a – 2^nd.  It is neither distinct nor in relation to anything else.  For non-dual Existence means there is no other. There is, thus, no difference or non-difference, no oneness or manyness, & no separate knower or doer or experiencer.  The Self has nothing to accept or reject. And there is nothing, or no one else to accept or reject the Self. There is no one else to think the Self is, or that the Self is not. Such is the Truth regarding the Self.

Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

The removal of superimposition is accomplished by Self-Inquiry. This is the intention of the negation of the Upanishads, “neti, neti”, “not this”. Such indicates the negation of one’s attributes, identity, or definition, of what is not truly the Self, not the essential Existence, or pure Consciousness. The removal of superimposition is the revelation of the Truth.  The Truth, or the Reality, is not newly created, nor did the superimposition diminish it in any way, just as the snake did not chase the rope away. But to see the rope, the Imagination of the snake must cease. Similarly, to know the Truth of the Self, Ignorance must cease.

True Knowledge is not experienced unless the prior ignorant conception is negated, just as the snake notion is destroyed to see the rope.  The Self, of the nature of pure Consciousness, is self-existent & can never be negated. Egoism has its origin in Delusion & has for its object that which is only imagined. Its definitions are only thoughts. The discernment of “Not this, not this” negates the very existence of Egoism along with its origin, its effects, & its imagined object.

All qualities, gross (physical) or subtle (mental), ought to be negated from the Self, from one’s Identity. If one is to know the Self as it is, whatever be the qualities attributed to the Self, be they physical or mental, they are to be regarded as mere ornaments. These should not be regarded as the Identity of the one who “wears” those “ornaments” (qualities).

If one rejects all that is objective from one’s Identity, one comes to the conclusion that the Self is the Knower, free from all that is perceived & conceived. In the same manner as one relinquishes mis-identification with the Body, & all that is objective, so should one sever the mis-identification with the supposed subject, which is the Ego.

The Self’s existence is independent of all & is different from all that is objective. The objectified “I” is the Ego. The superimposed objective portion of the “I”–consciousness should be abandoned, for it is not actually the Self.  Negation of what is objective means also negation of the Ego.  What remains is that which is implied in the aphorism: Aham Brahmasmi – “I am Brahman”. Only Brahman can be itself, 1–without–a–2^nd.  That is the only true “I”.

Brahman is unborn, immortal, imperishable, ageless, & all-comprehensive.  The same Absolute Brahman appears, according to one’s understanding, as God, who is said to be the Lord who dispassionately dispenses the results of karma, or as the Witness, which is Consciousness in relation to all else, or the attributeless, eternal “I”, of the nature of the indivisible, non-dual, Being-Consciousness & which alone is without – a – 2^nd.

And so to that source, & the Quantum Activism he currently advocates [with a 1–course  degree program], along with more than a half-dozen good books & former participation in the controversial What the Bleep movie, to him I extend enthusiastic endorsement, for that Qualified Non-Duality described in the context of Science.  I do not stand so much “with him”, as much as nearby saluting his good work. Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

In Self-Realization, all notions about the Absolute & the Self are relinquished. Notions about the Absolute are such as that it is separate from oneself, or objective, & that it is always-present. Notions about the Self are such as that it is endowed with Form, minuteness, that it is changeful, material, embodied, defined by thought, in Time, or endowed with Individuality. For Knowledge, the superimposition of the jiva–hood (concept of individuality) is removed from Atman (the Self) & Isvara–hood (idea of the Lord God) is removed from Brahman (the Absolute). Upon removal of such superimposition, or Ignorance, one realizes the Identity, as declared in the Upanishad, Tat Tvam Asi (Thou Art That). If the Self remains undefined, it is only Brahman, & That alone.  Therefore, one should know the Self.

The Knowledge of Reality, which is the Realization of the Self & the Realization of the Absolute, is attained by the direct path of true Knowledge. By liberating oneself from the mis-identification with what is not the Self, one knows the Self. When the Real Nature of what has been considered as the non-Self is seen, it invariably proves to be non-existent, for such non-Self was dependent upon mis-identification in order to even ever appear.

Blissful & Eternal is the Real Self. One should regard only that which has no beginning or end, is ever existent, is unchanging, is transcendent of all that has Form, of all that changes, & all that is in Time. The Self is also continuous & undivided as Real & one’s own true Being. By this Knowledge, one abides in the Natural State, which is the only True State of the Self. The Self may be said to call unto itself, as the Sought & as the Seeker; as the Guru & as the disciple; as God & as the devotee. The Self seeks itself in meditation. The Self reveals itself as inner experience.  The Self knows & abides in itself for blissful Eternity.

Self-Knowledge [further continued]:

Bondage is only Ignorance, or error in understanding. One does not attain Self-Knowledge due to Ignorance about the True Nature of the Self & adherence to false conceptions about the Self. The Ignorance makes one feel bound, & the adherence to false notions maintains the Ignorance, yielding the apparent solidity & false continuity of Illusion. Both Ignorance & the tendency to adhere to it are destroyed by Self-Inquiry to know the Truth of the Self.

Sri Shankara declares that just as trees on the bank seem to move when one is in a moving boat, so “transmigratory existence” (life in a Waking World, repeating like nightly dreams, but rather as “physical” Re-incarnation) seems to be true to one who mis–identifies the Self with the Mind.

Thus, when the Mind “moves”, one thinks that the Self (like the stationary trees) “moves”. When the Mind is still, one assumes the Self is still. Because the modifications of the Mind are pervaded by the reflected light of Consciousness, with the qualities of Reality & Identity borrowed from pure Being, one assumes that the Self is identical with the Mind & identifies oneself with those modifications. Thus one imagines, “my thoughts, my state of mind or being, my experiences, etc.”  The Mind, or the Ego, is objective, appearing by the light of pure (absolute non-dual) Consciousness alone. Pure Consciousness is the Absolute & is directly realized as existing as such when the “this”, or the objective portion, falsely attributed to it is negated.

Ignorance, or Illusion, is merely a superimposition. By “superimposition” is meant the imagined placement of some attributes, that do not belong to the Self, upon the Self. The basis of the superimposition is real. That basis is pure Existence, pure Consciousness. The superimposed is not a reality in & of itself, but is only a product of Imagination, the result of Ignorance.

It is like the snake imagined to be present when there is only a discarded rope in dim light. The snake is not real & was not really born. But in Imagination, the snake seems to be there, & as long as one is convinced that the snake is there, the true rope is invisible. If one removes that Illusion with the light of Knowledge, he sees the rope alone, as it is, which has been the only reality the entire time. The snake in the analogy represents all that is attributed falsely to the Reality of the Absolute Self, such as the World, the Body, Mind & its conceptions & tendencies, as well as Ego.

Mind & Happiness 59

The more intense & agitated the activity of our Mind becomes, the more rapidly it rises from one peak to another, & hence the briefer & shallower the troughs between those peaks become.  However, if we are able to restrain our Desires, Fears, Likes, Dislikes, Cravings, Aversions, & other such Passions, the activity of our Mind will become less intense, that is, its peaks will be less frequent & will rise less high, & the troughs between those peaks will be wider & deeper.

Thus, when the agitated & passionate activity of our Mind becomes less intense, we feel calmer & more contented, & hence we are able to experience more clearly the Happiness that is always within us. The Happiness that we derive from eating a piece of chocolate comes not from that piece of chocolate itself, but only from the satisfaction we feel as a result of the gratification of our desire for it. When such a desire is gratified, from where does the resulting feeling of satisfaction or Happiness actually come ?  It clearly does not come from the object of our desire, or from anything else outside us, but only from within our self.  If we carefully observe the feeling of Happiness that we experience when we eat a piece of chocolate, or when we enjoy any other object of our desire, we will clearly see that it arises from within our self & as a result of the temporary subsidence of our mental agitation caused by that desire.

Our satisfaction & the Happiness that seems to result from it are both subjective feelings that arise from our innermost Existence, & that we accordingly experience only within our self.  Since all Happiness thus comes only from our own innermost self, is it not clear that Happiness already exists within us, at least in a latent form ?  Why then should we waste our Time & energy trying to experience that Happiness in a roundabout manner by gratifying our desires for external objects & circumstances ?

Why should we not try instead to experience it in a direct manner by turning our attention within to discover the source from which all Happiness arises ?  Desire arises within us in various forms – as likes or dislikes, as cravings or aversions, as hopes or fears – but in whatever form it rises, it disturbs the natural Peace of our Mind, & thereby obscures the Happiness that is always within us.  All the misery or un-happiness that we experience is caused only by our desires.

Therefore, if we wish to experience perfect Happiness, untainted by even the least misery, we must free our self from all our desires.  But how can we actually do this ?  Our desires are deeply engrained within us & cannot easily be changed.  Though we may be able to modify them to a certain extent, our ability to do so is nevertheless limited.  Our present desires, or likes & dislikes, have been formed by our previous experiences, not only in the lifetime of the physical Body that we now identify as our self, but also in the lifetime of all the physical bodies that we formerly identified as our self, whether in our Dreams or in some other states of Consciousness similar to our present so-called Waking state.

One of our strongest desires is our desire for sexual pleasure.  Though the intensity of this desire may vary with age & circumstances, it always exists within us, at least in the form of a dormant seed.  As anyone who has tried to “conquer” lust knows only too well, we can never entirely overcome it.  Like all our other desires, our lust or desire for carnal pleasure is rooted in our wrong identification of our self with a physical Body.  Because we  mistake a physical Body to be our self, we mistake the natural biological urges of that Body to be our natural urges.

All our desires will therefore remain at least in seed form so long as we continue to have the habit of identifying our self with a physical Body, whether our present physical Body in this Waking state, or some other physical Body in Dream.  Therefore the only way to put an end to all our desires is to put an end to their root, which is our Mind, our limited Consciousness that feels “I am this Body.”

Remove the Reference

When we speak of an object as if it were at some Coordinate Point in Space, we conveniently defined “that” or “this” [Idam] in terms of a central Reference Origin with the subject at Coordinates (0, 0, 0).  This (0, 0, 0) Reference is the subject in Dualism, a subject which defines & is defined by the object in a given Perception.

But this Dualistic subject [“I” –  aham] is actually only a subtler kind of object, an imaginary entity known as Ego, said to flit ghostlike “in front” of the True Self, Pure Consciousness, as an assumption deriving from the mis-identification: “I am the Body.”  This Ego seems to support, & is supported by further derivative concepts, such as the mis-identifications: “I am the Mind”, “I am in a World”, I seek Pleasure & avoid Pain, I am of this gender, age, social class, point in the history of Time, located at this point in the Universe, with this life-time, with these desires, these fears, & the entire false Personality clustered around that central Reference Origin, the Ego.

Release of every personal tendency, [vasana]; release of every mis-identification, & so on, these “negations”, these acts of Detachment –  they lead to Ego–loss which is concomitant with Liberation, Enlightenment.

As in an earlier blog, we find that removal of the Reference Origin Ego eliminates the underpinning, the definition of every object, of the Universe itself. The Non-Dual, Pure Consciousness that remains is ever–free, & always was.  The Reference Ego never truly existed.  But to the extent that the Ego, the mis-identification, “I am the Body” seems to continue, then reduction & elimination of that Ego Personal mis-identification is the goal of Spiritual Practice.

The Self-Inquiry “Who am I ?”, as taught by Sri Ramana Maharshi, is the foremost & final measure to be taken, the universal method of Awakening.

Lollipop Trees

It is no exaggeration to say that the “World” we see in front of us is no more real than a child’s crayon–drawing of a landscape with Lollipop Trees.  These Lollipop Trees as they are called in one idiom, with “sticks” of brown to represent each tree trunk, topped by a swatch of somewhat circular green crayon to represent the massive leaves.  Like a green Lollipop, such as simple symbol is called a Lollipop Tree.

No one takes such to be a literal rendition of a tree, but most can recognize the intended object of this depiction. Well, on a more complex & sophisticated level, our entire Perception of the outside World is like that Lollipop Tree, only a little bit more complicated. When physiologists of Perception pin down what amounts to an image on the Retina, they find it to be a muddy, swirly “motion picture” rather than a crisp clear photographic image. Such is transmitted somehow along the Optic nerves to the Brain & somehow to the Mind, whatever that is, interpreted into a crisp clear “Koda-chrome” photo, or motion picture.

How can this be so ?  Backing up a bit, we can look at some classic experiments in the Physiology of Perception.  Our eyes invert the image of the World in front of us & our Brain re-inverts it into it back into a right–side–up World.  When (foolish) volunteers fearlessly agree, for a small amount of research payment, to wear lenses that invert the World in front of them, researchers find that the mind can adapt to this.  They actually start to see the World right–side again, even up through these inverting lenses.  Wearing these for a short time, & then having the glasses removed, the subjects find an upside–down World in front of their eyes.

But then after a certain amount of time, some days or so, the Mind re-inverts the World again & everything is back to normal, hopefully, thankfully.  So it is with the muddy “motion pictures” focused on the Retina, & all the missing information that the mind fills–in [Blind–Spot Black–experiment]*.

In fact, comparing the amount of information taken in by the Senses, that transmitted to the Brain & the image we seem to experience, some of the following basics seem to apply:

(1)  The “outside” it is far too vast to be taken in to any large degree.  Only a fraction is taken in.

(2)  Of that which is taken in, not enough remains to make a clear image. The Mind uses customary expectations & “fills–in”, the empty spaces with what is expected.

(3)  In the end, between inversion, attribution of colors, & “filling–in”, the Mind very much “creates” the perceived image – vision, sound, touch, etc. –  that we take to be an objective outside World.

(4)  In fact it can be truly said, that we have no idea what the outside World would really seem to be, or if there is even is an outside World.

Fast-forward to the Copenhagen–Convention of Quantum Mechanics in the early 20^th Century.  Double–Slit experiments, Delayed Double–Slit, & so on, all point to an amazing conclusion. The Intention, Perception, & Consciousness of the experimenter has an influence on the basic Quantum phenomena observed & recorded.  Somehow Consciousness seem to come in to the apparent unfolding of the World.  This leads those Copenhagen–Convention of Quantum Mechanics or Quantum Physics to propose that the World is Consciousness, a “Quantum Idealism”, as it were.

All this is later rejected in the mid-20^th Century by the on-slaught, or on-swell of predominant Mechanistic Atheism, characterizing 90+% of Physical Scientists.  Philosophers comes shortly behind with some 85% dedication to complete Mechanistic Atheism.  With the “Consciousness–created” Reality of the Copenhagen Convention in the Quantum World pushed aside, many other mysteries of the Universe & our Perception of it are similarly pushed aside.

To preserve that Atheism, a fantastic 10⁵⁰⁰ – fold Mechanistic Multi-Universe is hypothesized &, by the majority, attested to, as the most quote “plausible” explanation. But the original Quantum Idealist would say that, at best, the Universe perceived is sketched out in Lollipop Trees, so to speak.  If the Universe is there at all, Bishop George Berkeley continued Descartes’s BIV, “Brain-in-a-Vat” & Plato’s Cave–Allegory to the declaration that: the World is in the Mind.

At first, officially backing off, if only to retain his religious pay-check, the Bishop in later life reverted & fully admitted his conviction that indeed the World is in the Mind. Contemporary Turkish publisher Harun Yahya & many other unlikely compatriots throughout the ages & throughout the continents have chimed in with Bishop Berkeley.

But following Analytical Philosophy, the Idealism of the 19^th Century Europe was pretty much stomped into oblivion, even before Quantum Idealism’s attempted revival. Advaita Vedanta takes up a different tack, by direct, inner, subjective experience & unmistakable agreement across many cultures, many continents, thousands of sages, men & women, that: indeed the World is in the Mind.  And that Mind itself is in Consciousness, & that Consciousness is the Universe.

So we live among the Lollipop Trees, content that this is a “real” World, like the apparent “reality” of every lucid nightly Dream.  But as Dreams follow each other in the course of an evening, so are life-times said to follow each other in the course of “Re-incarnation”.  Such is the approximate Qualified Non-Dual view of Reality.  In the Un-Qualified Non-Dual view, even this Dream / Re-incarnation picture is itself only a Dream.  None of it stands as Real, alongside of Consciousness.

Instead of a World & oneself, there is only One Self.  Instead of oneself & millions of others there is only One Self.  This is not a “Solipsism” of an Individual.  This is an Over–Mind if you will, but actually an Over–Consciousness, far more subjective than the Mind.

The Mind is made up of images & words & symbols, illumined by the light of Consciousness.   Those images & words & symbols are but effervescent & momentary. Consciousness is steady, Eternal, Un-changing, & Un-limited.  A good name for this Non-Dual Reality “God” or in other languages Brahman, the Buddha–Mind, the Tao, the “First Principle” of the Eleatic Greek Sages, the “Godhead” of Meister Eckhart, & so on.

So ours is a choice, to live among the Lollipop Trees as another Lollipop, or to claim our peerless, Un-changing, Unborn, & Everlasting Freedom as Consciousness.  The shift in “perspective”, if it can be lowered to such a depiction, is well worth the effort, even if that effort should seem to be long-lasting.  For the result is the inner, subjective, Un-limited Happiness.  That is the same as the Consciousness & is the actual Existence of oneself.

When I assure myself that I exist, I also notice that I know that I exist so Existence & Knowledge / Consciousness are one.  That same inner depth is where Love, Happiness, Joy, & Peace are ever found.  They actually never waver, even if our focus on them does waver, only to finally rest unceasingly there as Consciousness–Bliss, as Existence itself.  This is to escape the child–”World” of Lollipop Trees & rest in Reality.  This is Enlightenment, Liberation, Heaven.

*  Many have experienced, & anyone can “Google”, the “Blind–Spot Black–Dot experiment.  Directed to the Optic Nerve connection blind–spot on the retina, any “black-dot”, or any other detail, will be replaced by an assumed continuation of the background, be that white–space, floral–wallpaper, or whatever it might be.

Mind & Happiness 51

Our Love for our own self & for our own Happiness is not wrong.  That Love is perfectly natural, & therefore unavoidable.  It becomes wrong only when, due to our lack of correct understanding about where true Happiness lies, it impels us to do actions that cause harm to other people. Therefore, in order to avoid doing any harm to anyone – to avoid making anyone else unhappy – it is essential that we understand what true Happiness is & where our true Happiness lies.

In order to understand this, we must first understand more about our self.  Since Love & Happiness are subjective feelings that are experienced by us, we cannot understand the True Nature of either of them without first understanding the True Nature of our self.  Only if we understand our own True Nature will we be able to understand how the desire for Happiness arises within us, & why we love our own self & our own Happiness above all other things.

The converse side of our desire to be happy is our desire to be free from pain, Suffering, misery or any other form of un-happiness. What we all desire is to be perfectly happy, free from even the least form of un-happiness.  In fact, what we call Happiness is just the state in which we are free from un-happiness.

Our Natural State is to be happy. Our desire for Happiness is our desire for our Natural State. Consciously or unconsciously, we are all seeking what is natural for us.  For example, when we have a headache, why do we wish to be free of it ?  Because a headache is not natural to us, when we experience one, we desire to be free of it.  The same is the case with all other things that are not natural to us.  We cannot feel entirely comfortable or happy with anything that is not truly natural to us.  That is why we never feel perfectly happy, in spite of all the material, mental, & emotional pleasures that we may be enjoying.  All such pleasures come & go, & hence they are not natural to us.

Whatever is truly natural to us – whatever is inherent in our essential nature – must be with us always.  Since the physical Body that we now take to be our self is experienced by us only in our present Waking State, & not in Dream or in Deep Dreamless Sleep, it is not our Essential Nature. Likewise, since our Mind is experienced by us only in the states of Waking & Dream, & not in the state of Deep Dreamless Sleep, even it is not our Essential Nature.  Because in Deep Dreamless Sleep we remain peacefully & happily without either our Mind or our Body, neither of them is natural to us.

Though this contention that we exist in the absence of our Mind & Body in Deep Dreamless Sleep may initially seem strange to us, & may therefore on superficial observation appear to be questionable, if we consider it carefully, we will clearly understand that it is not merely a dubious supposition, but is in fact the obvious truth that each one of us actually experiences in Deep Dreamless Sleep, as we shall see more clearly when we examine our 3 States of Consciousness in greater detail.

Mind & Happiness 50

Our greatest Love is only for our self, & it is for our own sake that we love other people & things. We love our family, our friends & our possessions because we feel that they are ours, & because loving them makes us feel happy.  Our Love for our own Happiness is inseparable from our Love for our own self.  Because we love our own self above all other things, we desire our own Happiness above all other things.

We love & desire whatever makes us happy, & we dislike & fear whatever makes us unhappy. All our likes & dislikes, all our desires & fears, are rooted in our love for our own Happiness, which in turn is rooted in our love for our own self.  Why do we love our own self more than we love any other person or thing ?  The reason we love certain other people & certain other things is because we feel that they make us happy, or at least can make us happy.

That is, we love whatever we believe can give us Happiness.  If we know that something does not make us happy, & cannot make us happy, we do not feel any particular love for it.  Is not Happiness, therefore, the fundamental cause of all forms of Love ?  Is not all the Love that we feel for various people & things in essence only our Love for our own Happiness ?  Do we not love only those things that are potential sources of Happiness for us ?  Therefore, since we love our own self above all other things, is it not clear that we our self are foremost among all the potential sources of our Happiness ?

In fact, we are the only true source of all our Happiness, because whatever Happiness we seem to derive from other people or things arises only from within us.  Since all our Happiness ultimately comes only from within us, is it not clear that Happiness is something inherent in us ?  In fact, Happiness is our own True & Essential Nature.  Therefore, the reason why we love our own self more than any other person or thing is simply that we our self are Happiness – the fullness of perfect Happiness, & the one Ultimate Source of all the various forms of Happiness that we seemingly derive from other people & things.

At the risk of leaning on an old movie, weekend playfully or at least less seriously begin by re-examining some pop media statements that from the outset were incompletely digested by the public, and perhaps even by the writers and producers so inspired.

Wake up Neo, the Matrix has you. 

The Matrix really does have you.  It has to blinded to reality, & loss in a Dream World. But just what is this “Matrix” ?  Of course, then that the Latin for “mother”, the Matrix could be seen as the “Divine Mother”, Maya, & more intimately or personally, the Mind.

The Matrix is everything that you see.

“Real” ?  How do you determine what is Real ?  What you perceive, you know only as electrical impulses in your Brain.

This Senate the great forward thrust of the movies inquiry into the truth. And yet it is also the endpoint because the same process of examination is not reflected back onto the nerve impulses themselves. How are they known. The brain the body and all the nerve impulses are known to Vision, direct or in the media, & reading, the words of others: hearing, especially as it hearing from others; & so on.

And so, Perception must be put under the same light as the external objects perceived –  Perception itself & all of its components or objects.  But objects of, to, or for what ?

Well, Consciousness of course, if Consciousness be taken as more fundamental than mere nerve impulses.  Consciousness then is direct knowing, at the endpoint of every the Perceptual or Conceptual process.

No one can tell you what the Matrix is, you must discover it for yourself.

You are living in a Dream World, Neo.

To whatever degree the writers & the producers fully understood their own script lines, these popular yet mysterious statements hinted strongly at the Reality known to the wisest in India, Tibet, China, Japan, & to some degree in Greek colonies among certain Philosophers, & to a few Christian mystics such as Meister Eckhart.

In short Reality is purely subjective & purely unitary. There is only One Consciousness, with the appearance of multiple individuals being a double vision multiplied billions of times. The Waking State Body is not in principle any different than the Dream Body in each Dream.

The Reality is not personal, not individual, Immortal, ever–free, all–loving, & inherently completely blissful. In the life of an ordinary man, the most subjective experiences include the inherent certainty of his own Existence. Part of this recognition is the recognition of Consciousness itself by which that or anything could be known.

And finally sporadic throughout life, seemingly temporary experiences of Love & Happiness are also deeply subjective.  In the Matrix movie we hear:

Being “the One” is like falling in love.  No one can tell you that you are or that you are not, but you know it through & through. These 3 then: Existence, Consciousness, & happiness – bless – love these are what have long been indicated as Sat–Chit–Ananda, Existence–Consciousness–Bliss. These are the subjective reality, not 3, but 1, seen from 3 different perspectives.

By the time we study the apparent phenomena of objective things, we do well to pay attention to Cognitive Sciences & to Quantum Mechanics where the issue of Consciousness comes to the fore, however concealed within the Objective assumptions.  Any inspection of, attention given to: Consciousness, must be relatively worthwhile. No exact conclusion here should be expected.  But hints & indications, consistent with the underlying Subjective Reality could well be expected.

Since the testimony of Sages challenges us to question & doubt all the beliefs that we have cherished for so long about what we are & about the reality of our Life in this World, we may initially find it difficult to trust their words. That is why, rather than asking us to believe anything that we do not already know, Sri Ramana based his teachings upon an analysis of our own everyday experience.

When we critically analyze our experience of the 3 States of Consciousness (Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep) that we undergo each day, we cannot reasonably avoid doubting most of what we normally take for granted about who we are & about the reality of all that we experience in these 3 States.  In order to acquire knowledge that we cannot reasonably doubt, we must

first disentangle our self from all the confused & uncertain knowledge we now have about our self.  Such disentanglement can be achieved only by turning our attention away from all objects of knowledge & towards our self, the Consciousness by which everything is known. This process of disentanglement is the journey of Self-Discovery that all Sages urge us to undertake.

The purpose of this philosophical analysis of our everyday experience of our self is only to enable us to obtain a clear theoretical understanding of who we really are, & thereby to ascertain the practical means by which we can attain direct experience of our own Real Nature. Though in this journey of self-discovery we will be guided by the revelations of Sri Ramana & other Sages, we will nevertheless be relying primarily upon our own personal experience of our Existence or Consciousness, & thus we will as far as possible avoid the need to rely upon belief in what we our self do not actually know.

If we take this journey depending always upon our own experience of our self as our guide, we will be able to verify for our self the Truth of all that has been revealed through the words of Sages, who have taken this journey before us.  However, while we are proceeding on this journey of Self-Discovery, & before we complete it, we are likely to discover that our rational analysis of our already existing experience of our own Existence & Consciousness, together with our experience of practicing the art of Self-Conscious Existence, will inspire in our Mind a steadily increasing trust in the words of Sages.

Such trust should not be mistaken to be mere “blind belief”, because it is a trust born not of intellectual blindness but of a deep inner clarity of Mind gained by dwelling repeatedly upon the true light of Self-Consciousness, which ever shines in the core of our Existence, as the core of our Existence, but which till now we have always habitually ignored due to our infatuation with the external World of Sense Perceptions.

Though it is possible for us to turn our attention away from the external World & towards our own essential Consciousness “I exist” in order to discover our true nature even without our placing our trust in the words of anyone, in practice while pursuing the journey of Self-Discovery, & while confronting all the obstacles that inevitably arise on the way, we can derive much benefit by trusting & learning from the testimony of those who have taken & completed this journey before us.

We attempt to turn our attention away from the external World & towards our essential Self-Consciousness “I exist” in order to remain merely as this fundamental Consciousness of our own Existence.  However, even if we are unwilling to trust anything that we do not already know for certain, we can still pursue this journey of self-discovery by taking all our doubts to their logical conclusion – by doubting the reality of our doubting Mind, & therefore turning our attention towards the Consciousness that underlies it in order to know the ultimate source from which it has arisen along with all its doubts.

We are to question critically our habitual view of our self, the World & God, & to embark upon the journey of Self-Discovery by investigating our Consciousness “I exist”, which is the centere & fundamental basis of all our experience & knowledge, to verify for our self the Truth revealed in the words of Sri Ramana & other Sages.

In spite of all the confusing complexity found in the spiritual literature of the World, running throughout that literature there is a common thread of simple Truth, which we can easily discern if we are able to understand the original teachings of the real Sages.  Because the same fundamental truth of Non-Duality has been expressed in the recorded words of Sages from so many diverse cultures throughout the ages, modern students of Philosophy often call it the “perennial philosophy“, a term that corresponds to the ancient Sanskrit term sanātana dharma, which literally means “that which always upholds” or “that which is ever established“, & which therefore by implication means the “eternal truth“, the “eternal law“, the “eternal principle“, the “eternal support“, the “eternal foundation“, the “eternal nature“, the “eternal essence“, the “eternal way” or the “eternal religion“.

Fortunately for us, Sri Ramana’s Teachings were not only recorded in his Life-time by many of his followers, some of whom understood them very clearly, but were also written by him in various poems & other works.  Since he composed poetry not only in the language of allegory & mystical love, but also in the language of philosophy, & since in his poetry he described the reality & the means of attaining it in very clear & unambiguous terms, he has made it extremely easy for us to understand the simple truth that underlies the Teachings of all Sages.

Having read & understood his Teachings, if we read the Teachings of any other real Sage, we can easily recognize that the same Truth is expressed in all of them.  Moreover, his Teachings also serve as a key that enables us to unravel & extract the true Teachings of the Sages from the dense mass of extraneous Theologies, Cosmologies & Philosophies with which they have become mixed in every religion & spiritual tradition.

Therefore readers who are already familiar with the sanātana dharma, the timeless & universal truth or “perennial philosophy” taught by all Sages, will find that the Teachings of Sri Ramana also express that same basic Philosophy.  However, they will also find that his Teachings throw a clear & fresh light upon that Philosophy, elucidating many subtle & profound truths that have seldom been expressed so explicitly by other Sages, particularly with regard to the practical means by which we can attain the true experience of Non-Dual Self-Knowledge.

Because the teachings of Sri Ramana are a simple yet very profound revelation of the fundamental & Absolute Reality that underlies the appearance of all multiplicity & diversity, they express the Ultimate Truth that is the inner essence of all religions & spiritual traditions.  Hence people of many diverse religious & cultural backgrounds have recognized that his Teachings are a profoundly insightful & authentic exposition of the true import of their own religion or spiritual tradition, & have understood that after studying his teachings they need not study any other spiritual texts.

Though the same simple truth of Non-Duality can be found expressed in all the spiritual literature of the World if we search for it hard enough, it is not necessary or advisable for us to waste our Time searching for it in the scriptures & sacred writings, where it is usually hidden among a dense mass of extraneous ideas. That is why in verse 60 of Vivēkacūḍāmaṇi Sri Adi Sankara warned all serious spiritual aspirants to avoid excessive study of the scriptures or śāstras, which he described as a “great forest of delusive snares of noisy words” (śabda jālaṁ mahāraṇyaṁ) & a “cause of unsteadiness, bewilderment & confusion of Mind” (cittabhramaṇa kāraṇam), & advised us that with the guidance of a Sage who knows the Truth we should instead try to investigate & know the Truth of our Self through direct experience.

For us to attain such direct non-dual experience of our own Real Self, all the guidance required can be found expressed in an extremely clear & simple manner in the teachings of Sri Ramana. If we read & understand his Teachings, there will be no need for us to study any other scriptures or sacred writings, because from his Teachings we will learn that the Truth does not lie outside us in any books, but only within us, in the innermost core of our Existence, & that the only means to experience it is therefore to turn our attention self-wards to know the reality of the Consciousness by which we know all other things.

This detailed analysis derives from 3 principal sources.  In part it consists of ideas from the writings & recorded sayings of Sri Ramana, in particular from the most comprehensive & profound record of his sayings that his pre-eminent disciple Sri Muruganar preserved in the form of Tamil verses in Guru Vācaka Kōvai.

In part it consists of ideas from Sri Sadhu Om, who was one of the closest disciples of Sri Ramana (by which term I mean not those who merely lived close to him physically, but those who followed his Teachings most closely & truly), who was a lucid & extremely profound exponent of his Teachings.

However, for the most part it consists of Sri Ramana’s Teachings. However, as Sri Ramana himself emphasized, mere belief in certain ideas is not True Knowledge, so we must all hold our beliefs tentatively, & must endeavor to verify them for our self by seeking to attain true experiential knowledge of the fundamental & absolute reality through empirical research, that is, through practical Self-Investigation. Therefore, the sole aim of all the theory discussed is to guide us & encourage us in our practical quest for the direct, immediate, Non-Dual & Absolute experience of True Self-Knowledge.

When we begin to study any Knowledge, such as Self-Knowledge, which is concerned not with knowing any object but only with knowing the Consciousness by which all objects are known, it is necessary for us to have tentative trust in the experience & testimony of those who have already acquired that practical knowledge.

All learning requires a keen, inquisitive & questioning Mind, but just as honest doubt plays an important part in the learning process, so too does tentative trust. Knowledge is acquired most efficiently & effectively by an intelligent use of both doubt & trust.  A discriminating student knows what is to be doubted, & what is to be tentatively trusted.

More than in any other Knowledge, in this Self-Knowledge, doubt is essential, because to know the Truth that underlies all appearances, we must doubt the reality of everything – not just the reality of the objects known by our Mind, but the reality of our knowing Mind itself.  However, though doubt plays such a vital role in the process of acquiring self-knowledge, tentative trust in the testimony of Sages, who have already attained the experience of true Self-Knowledge, is nevertheless extremely helpful.

The Philosophical terminology that Sages in different cultures & different ages have used to express the Truth differs greatly, & if understood only superficially may often appear to be conflicting.  For example, many Sages have used terms such as “God” to refer to the Absolute Reality, while others like Buddha & Mahavira [Jain] have avoided using such a term. This has led some people to claim that such Sages have denied the existence of God.  But such a claim is mis-leading, & arises from an overly simplistic understanding both of the Reality & of the term “God”.

The sole aim of the teachings of Buddha & Mahavira [Jain], like that of all other Sages, was to lead us to the One Absolute Reality. The terminology they each used when talking about that Reality may vary, but the Reality about which they all talked is the same.  That Reality can be known only by direct Non-Dual experience, & can never be conceived by the Mind, nor expressed by words.

Being Infinite, direct Non-Dual experience transcends all the conceptual qualities that our finite Minds attribute to it, so it cannot be correctly described as Existence either this or that.  It is everything, & at the same time it is nothing. Therefore it is equally correct, & also equally incorrect, either to refer to it as “God” or not to refer to it as “God”.

The term “God” has no fixed meaning.  In certain contexts it means one thing, & in other contexts it means another thing, because it is a name given to a wide range of notions that people hold about the Supreme or Ultimate Reality. Some of our notions about God are decidedly anthropomorphic, whereas others are more abstract, but none of them are either entirely correct or entirely incorrect.

In vēdānta, therefore, a distinction is made between 2 basic forms of God.  One form is called saguṇa brahman, which means “brahman with guṇas“, & the other form is called nirguṇa brahman, which means “brahman without guṇas“.  The word brahman means the Absolute Reality, the Supreme Existence or God, & the word guṇa means quality or attribute.

Thus saguṇa brahman is the relative form of God, God with qualities (guṇas) & attributes as conceived by the human Mind, while nirguṇa brahman is the Absolute & Real form of God, God without any conceivable quality (guṇa) or attribute.  The God of human conception, whatever that conception may be, is saguṇa brahman, whereas the Reality of God, which transcends all human conception, is nirguṇa brahman.  Thus nirguṇa brahman is the substance or absolute Reality that underlies saguṇa brahman, the God of our limited conception.

Though God as saguṇa brahman is not the Ultimate or Absolute Reality, He & all the Divine qualities we attribute to Him are as real as our own Individuality. Therefore so long as we take our self to be a separate Individual, God & all his divine qualities are for all practical purposes real.

But when we attain the experience of true Self-Knowledge & thereby destroy the false notion that we are an individual Consciousness that is separate from God, God will remain as our own Real Self or essential Existence, the Absolute Reality or nirguṇa brahman, which transcends all human conception.

Because the aim of the Buddha & Mahavira [Jain] was to teach us the means by which we can attain the Absolute Reality, which is beyond all guṇas, qualities or attributes, they did not consider it necessary to talk about “God”, a term that is generally understood to mean saguṇa brahman, the Supreme Existence endowed with Divine qualities.  Other Sages, however, have used the term “God” either as a word referring to nirguṇa brahman, the Absolute Reality that transcends all qualities, or because they understood that the people to whom they were speaking had need of a concept of a personal God who would aid them in their efforts to attain the transpersonal Reality.

There is thus no fundamental difference between the Teachings of Sages who have used the term “God” & those who have not used this term.  Both are speaking about the same Absolute Reality, but have simply chosen to express it in different terms.

The fact that the Buddha clearly acknowledged the existence of the Absolute Reality or nirguṇa brahman is evident from one of his important and well-known teachings, which is recorded in the Tipiṭaka 2.5.3.8.3 (Udāna 8.3):

“There is, mendicants, that which is Not–Born, that which has not come into Existence, that which is not made, that which is not fabricated.  If there were not, mendicants, that which is Not–Born, that which has not come into Existence, that which is not made, that which is not fabricated, here [in this World or in this Life-time] escape from that which is born, from that which has come into Existence, from that which is made, from that which is fabricated, would therefore not have been [a state that could be] clearly known [or experienced].  But because, mendicants, there is indeed that which is Not–Born, that which has not come into Existence, that which is not made, that which is not fabricated, therefore escape from that which is born, from that which has come into Existence, from that which is made, from that which is fabricated, is [a state that can be] clearly known [or experienced].”  Though there is a wealth of profound meaning in these words of the Buddha, this is not a suitable place to examine them in depth.

Another superficial difference between the teachings of the Buddha & those of advaita vēdānta is that the Buddha taught the truth of anattā, a Pali term that is a modified form of the Sanskri  word anātmā, which means “no self”, whereas sages of the advaita vēdānta tradition teach that ātmā or “Self” is the sole existing Reality.  Some people claim that this is a fundamental contradiction between their respective teachings, whereas in fact this is merely a superficial difference in terminology.

When Buddha taught that there is no “self” or ātmā, he was referring only to our finite individual self or jīvātmā, which all sages of the advaita vēdānta tradition also say is unreal.  And when those sages teach that “self” or ātmā is the sole existing Reality, they are referring not to our false

individual self but only to our Real Self – our true Existence or essential “is”-ness, our pure, Unlimited, Undivided, Unqualified & Absolutely Non-Dual Consciousness of our own Existence, which alone remains in the state of nirvāṇa, in which the false appearance of our individual object-knowing Consciousness is completely extinguished.

Thus there is no contradiction at all between the truth of “no self” or anattā taught by the Buddha & the truth that “self” or ātmā is the sole existing Reality taught by advaita vēdānta.  The teachings of different sages appear to differ from one another, or even to contradict one another, for 3 main reasons:

1^stly, it is because of the different terminology that they have used to teach the Truth, which words can never express perfectly, but can only indicate.

2^ndly, it is because they had to adapt their teachings to suit the receptivity of the people they were teaching. And –

3^rdly, it is because their original teachings have often become mixed with the ideas of their followers, many of whom had no direct experience of the Truth they taught, nor even a clear & correct understanding of it.

The records that have survived of the Teachings of many Sages were not written by those Sages themselves, but were recorded by their followers, often long after their Life-time. Therefore such records often do not reflect the Teachings of those Sages perfectly, but only reflect the understanding that some of their literate followers had of their Teachings.

In almost all religions & spiritual traditions, the original Teachings of Sages have become mixed up with elaborate systems of Theology, Cosmology, Philosophy, & Psychology, which bear very little relation to the actual experience of those Sages.  Such Theologies & Cosmologies originate

from the Minds of people who were unable to understand the simplicity & immediacy of the Truth taught by the Sages, & who therefore created such elaborate & complex systems of belief in an attempt to explain what they themselves could not understand.  Because they originated in this manner, all the complex Theologies & Cosmologies that exist in every religion only serve to confuse people & obscure from their Minds the simple Truth of Non-Duality taught by Sages.

Since our Mind therefore has no Essential Nature of its own, we can definitely conclude that it has no reality of its own, but borrows its seeming reality only from our Essential Consciousness “I exist”.  Our Mind is therefore an unreal phantom, something that is in fact neither one thing nor another.  The Mind is a false appearance, an Illusion or Hallucination, a self-deceiving Imagination that appears & disappears in our one real Consciousness “I exist”.

However, though our Mind deceives itself by appearing in & as our Real Consciousness “I exist”, it does not deceive our Consciousness “I exist”, which always remains as it is, knowing only its own Existence, & is affected by nothing else whatsoever.

Because our real Consciousness “I am” always remains as pure Consciousness, undefiled by the knowledge of anything other than itself, nothing that appears or disappears can ever affect it even in the least.  That is, whatever else may appear or disappear, we always know “I exist”.

The essential nature of our Real Consciousness “I am” is only Self-Consciousness – Consciousness of our own Existence – & not Consciousness of anything other than our self. Because our Consciousness of other things appears & disappears, it cannot be the Essential Nature of our real underlying Consciousness “I exist”.

In its Real & Essential Nature, our Consciousness “I exist” is ever unchanging, & ever unaffected by any change that may appear to occur. Therefore, whatever other knowledge may appear or disappear, it cannot affect our fundamental Consciousness of our own Existence, “I exist”, which exists & knows its own existence in all states & at all times.

Our Mind is therefore a false form of Consciousness, an imaginary, confused & self-deceiving form of knowledge, a spurious entity that has no real existence of its own.  Since all Duality or Multiplicity is known only by this Mind, it depends for its seeming existence upon this Mind – this imaginary, confused, self-deceiving & unreal form of Consciousness.  Hence our Mind is the root cause of the appearance of duality. Without our Mind to know it, no Duality could exist. Therefore Duality can only be as real as our Mind, which knows it.  Since our Mind is an unreal appearance that rises & subsides in our real Consciousness “I am”, all duality is likewise an unreal appearance.

Therefore we can reasonably conclude that our pure Consciousness “I exist” is the only existing reality, & that our Mind & all the duality or multiplicity which is known by it is only an unreal appearance – an appearance that is unreal because it is impermanent, constantly changing, and dependent for its seeming existence upon the one real Consciousness “I exist”.

Thus, if we have the courage & intellectual honesty to seriously doubt & question the reality of our Mind, & to analyze its nature impartially, we will be led unavoidably to a Non-Dualistic view of reality – to the conclusion that the only existing Reality is our fundamental Consciousness of our own essential Existence, our pure non-dual self-Consciousness “I exist”, & that all else is only an illusion or false appearance, an Imagination created & known only by our imaginary Mind.

Whereas our Consciousness “I exist” is permanent, our Mind is impermanent.

Whereas our Consciousness “I exist” is ever unchanging Existence, which always remains as it is, our Mind is a constantly changing flow of thoughts.  And:

Whereas our Consciousness “I exist” is always conscious of its own Existence, our Mind is sometimes conscious of itself & other things, & sometimes conscious neither of itself nor of any other thing. Therefore our Consciousness “I exist” is Real, whereas our Mind is merely an unreal appearance.

If the essential nature of something is Consciousness, it must always be conscious, because nothing can ever be separated from its essential nature.  Because Consciousness is the essential nature of our Consciousness “I exist”, Consciousness is conscious at all times & in all 3 States.

Similarly, because the essential nature of our Consciousness “I exist” is also Existence or existence, it exists at all times & in all 3 States.  In contrast, since our Mind is conscious only during the Waking & Dream States, & ceases to be conscious in Deep Dreamless Sleep, its essential nature cannot be Consciousness.

Similarly, since the Mind exists only in Waking & Dream, but ceases to exist in Deep Dreamless Sleep, its essential nature cannot be Existence.  In fact, there is nothing that can be pointed out as being the essential nature of our Mind, because it is not constantly any one thing.  The Body cannot be its essential nature, because though it identifies itself with a particular Body in the Waking state, in Dream it identifies itself with some other Body, & in Deep Dreamless Sleep it identifies itself with no Body at all.

Similarly, the Mind’s essential nature cannot be any thought or even the act of thinking, because throughout the Waking & Dream states the thoughts it thinks are constantly changing, & in Deep Dreamless Sleep the Mind ceases to think any thought. Though our Mind in fact has no essential nature of its own, in the Waking & Dream states its Essential Nature appears to be Consciousness.  However, since the Mind ceases to be conscious in Deep Dreamless Sleep, the Consciousness that appears to be its Essential Nature in Waking & Dream is in fact borrowed by it from our real Consciousness “I exist”.

The only thing whose reality we cannot doubt is our Consciousness of our own Existence – our Non-Dual Self-Consciousness, “I exist”.  Other than this Non-Dual & fundamental Consciousness “I exist”, everything that we experience is open to doubt. Hence we cannot reasonably avoid doubting the reality of all Duality, & suspecting that in fact the only Reality is our Non-Dual Consciousness of our own Existence, “I exist”.

By what standard can we determine whether or not something is real ?  A thing can be truly said to be real only if it is absolutely, unconditionally & independently real, & not if its reality is in any way relative, conditional, or dependent upon something else.  Therefore, according to Sri Ramana, something can be called real only if it satisfies 3 essential criteria: it must be:

1) Eternal,

2) Unchanging, &

3) Self-shining.

If something is not Eternal, though it may appear to be “real” for a certain period of time, it was not real before it came into existence, & it will not be real after it ceases to exist, so in fact it is unreal even while it appears to be real.  Because it is confined within the limits of Time, its seeming reality is relative & conditional.  That which is Absolutely & Unconditionally real must be real at all times, & cannot be limited in relation to anything else.

Moreover, if something undergoes Change during the course of time, it is one thing at one time, but becomes another thing at another time, & hence it does not exist Eternally as any one thing. Being impermanent, that which changes is not real.

However, the most important criteria by which we can determine something as real is that it must be Self-Shining. By the term “self-shining”, Sri Ramana means “self-knowing” or “self-conscious”, that is, knowing itself by its own light of Consciousness. That which is Absolutely & Unconditionally Real need not depend upon any Consciousness other than itself to be known.  If something depends upon something else in order to be known as existing or real, then its reality depends upon the reality of the Consciousness that knows it.  Since it does not know itself to be real, it is not real at all, but merely appears to be real so long as it is known by the Consciousness that knows it.

Measured by this standard, the only existing Reality is our fundamental Consciousness “I exist”, because among all the things that we experience or know, it is the only thing that is permanent, the only thing that never undergoes any Change, & the only thing that knows its own Existence without the aid of any other thing.

Unlike this Consciousness “I exist”, our Mind is impermanent, because it appears in the States of Waking & Dream, & disappears in Deep Dreamless Sleep.  Even while it does appear to exist, our Mind is constantly undergoing Change, thinking of one thing at one moment & another thing at another moment.

And though our Mind appears to know itself by its own power of Consciousness, in fact the Consciousness by which it knows itself & all other things is only our basic Consciousness “I exist”, which it seemingly usurps as its own, but which is nevertheless independent of it.  Our Mind is distinct from our essential Consciousness “I exist”, by the light of which it seemingly knows the existence of itself & other things, because our Consciousness “I exist” can exist in the absence of our Mind, as in Deep Dreamless Sleep.

Our Mind does not always identify the same Body as “I”.  In Waking, the Mind takes one Body to be “I”, but in each Dream it takes some other Dream–Body to be “I”.  Since it can identify itself with different bodies at different times, it cannot really be any of those bodies.

By identifying itself with a Body, our Mind deludes itself into experiencing our Consciousness “I exist” as being something confined within the limits of a Body, & a Body composed of unconscious Matter as being something that is endowed with Consciousness. If our Mind did not delude itself in this manner, it would not exist as a separate entity called “Mind”, but would remain as pure Consciousness, undefiled by any form of limitation.

Because the very nature of our Mind is to delude itself into experiencing that it is what it is not, Sri Ramana said that our Mind itself is māyā, the primordial power of Delusion, Illusion or self-deception – the power that makes what is Real appear to be un-real, & what is un-real appear to be Real.

In Dream our Mind projects an imaginary Body, which it identifies as “I”, & through the 5 Senses of that Body it perceives an imaginary World.  So long as our Mind continues to be in that State of Dream, it takes the Body & World that it experiences in Dream to be real.  However absurd some of the things which it experiences may appear to exist, still our Mind deludes itself into believing that those things are real.  So long as our Mind experiences itself as a Body, it cannot but experience all that it perceives through the Senses of that Body as real. But when we wake up from a Dream, we cease to experience the Dream–Body as “I”, & we simultaneously cease to experience the Dream World as “real”.

Thus from our experience in Dream, & our contrasting experience on Waking from Dream, we can clearly understand that by the power of its imagination our Mind has the ability to create a World of duality & simultaneously convince itself that that World is real. When we know that our Mind has this power of simultaneous creation & self-deception, we have to doubt whether all the duality that it now experiences in the Waking state is anything other than a product of its own self-deceiving power of Imagination.
